- It might only be the first week of June, but I’m already tired of seeing all the lists that mark the dog days of college football offseason.
Best players, toughests units, roughest schedules. So much over analysis. But why don’t you see many stories that analyze coaching? Because it might offend someone, namely the coaches.
I wrote about USC’s coaching staff extensively last season, especially the shortcomings. And USC athletic director Lynn Swann rewarded Coach Clay Helton, offensive coordinator Tee Martin and defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast with new contracts.
Thank disgraced school president Max Nikias for that too.
- USC men’s and women’s track teams are at the NCAA championships this weekend in Eugene, Ore. Michael Norman (above) should win the 400 meters to headline a strong sprint corps. But did you see the Trojans’ uniforms (also above)? Where’s the cardinal? This might be the worst singlet I’ve seen a USC team wear.
- De’Anthony Melton worked out with the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday. I will guarantee you that Melton would have played in the NIT, which is another reason NBA teams should be happy to draft him.
- USC is contacting season-ticket holders over the next five months to discuss seating options for 2019 and beyond.
It has divided season-ticket holders into five groups: Faithful (30+ years), Scholarly (15+ years), Skillful (10+ years), Courageous (5+ years) and Ambitious (1+ year).
I’d say you are “courageous” if you have been a season-ticket holder the past five years and kept renewing.
These attributes like “courageous” are on the base of Tommy Trojan.
- I’m not sure why it’s news that the four most-watched Pac-12 games last season involved USC. Here are the games:
1. Nov. 18 – USC-UCLA, 4 million
2. Dec. 1 – Stanford-USC, 3.7 million
3. Oct. 14 – USC-Utah, 3.2 million
4. Sep. 23 – USC-Cal, 3.1 million
USC has the most tradition, most success and biggest market in the conference. Oh, and Pac-12 teams that might get a top-rated game like Oregon or UCLA were pretty bad last season. Again, this isn’t the SEC. Other than USC, who is there to garner a large audience? Washington? Who cares about the Huskies outside the Evergreen State?
When USC isn’t the most popular TV draw, then it will be news.

I guess I’d be in the faithful column of season ticket holders if I could tolerate the heat. But now that every game is televised and watchable in air conditioned comfort, I’m officially a fair weather fan. Last year I couldn’t give the Western Michigan tickets away. This year I saved myself the misery.

He’s far more versatile about USC than just football….we all gravitate in and around football but he covers more ground than ANY other USCER….you may and they may not like his personality but this is not a personality contest, but rather one of unfettered information on the school…..many are persecuted on earth for their shortcomings but Mr. Wolf should be judged on the amount and insight of opinion and fact about USC….Like Reggie Bush, Scott is a USC treasure…..like him or not, agree with him or not, he brings it unlike any other offered to us…he’s unique and those who seek to exclude him do a disservice to USC grads like me….
