As expected, Mater Dei quarterback Bryce Young committed to USC.
Young is the No. 1-rated dual threat QB for the Class of 2020 per Rivals.
Now some questions: Young’s size (6-0, 180) will be an issue for some. A high school coach told me he wants to see how Young does outside of a 7-on-7 environment and how Young handles the physicality of the Trinity League while at Mater Dei.
The same coach also wondered what USC’s game plan was for getting Young and St. John Bosco quarterback DJ Uiagalelei? The conventional thought (even from those close to Bosco) is that Uiagalelei will not go to the same school as Young. So will Uiagalelei go to Clemson?
If Uiagalelei does commit to USC, does Young switch? There are a lot of scenarios. But it seems unwise for both QBs to go to the same school. Who wants to become the next Max Browne? Or Max Wittek?
The high school coach I spoke to was more inclined to go with the pro-style size and arm of Uiagalelei (6-4, 235).
Should USC have held off on Young? No, because commitments are not binding anyways.
Besides, there’s nothing wrong with a good, athletic quarterback. Look at Brett Hundley’s record against USC for proof of that.
I think they made the right move here. Small chance they get both QB’s, but they can always change their mind

The BIG thing to look at when evaluating a quarterback is how does the guy run an offense? Wittek had a huge arm but he didn’t have any idea of how to conduct a drive —-whereas anybody who’s seen Young knows he makes defenses look like their playing in slow motion. He’s the kind of guy that Oregon used to drive us nuts with during their heyday.

Congrats, Clay! Your down-to-earth nature is like a magnet to these southern California families who have grown weary of the slick power-5 recruiting coordinators. You can close like few others!

What is going on with USC recruiting for this upcoming year? I took a look at Oregon’s class and they have four guys from Mater Dei, while SC has none. Huh? Oregon is getting a lot of guys from Southern California.
