If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

It’s time for Friday’s USC notes column:

How does a team that had only two practices last week so everyone could rest enter the Colorado game with linebacker Cameron Smith only 50-50 because of a strained hamstring?

And even after the two-practice bye week, USC kept its streak intact of having an offensive line starter miss at least one practice when Toa Lobendahn sat out Wednesday’s practice with back spasms.

  • It has been mentioned before but the strength-and-conditioning program really needs some investigation.
  • No wonder an NFL scout told me this week that USC plays the way it practices.
  • There is no school that could force the Pac-12 to get its act together more than USC. It resides in the biggest media market, has the most popular football program and should be the most influential/powerful conference member.

Until you consider that USC has no full-time president, an athletic director who has not led on any issue since being appointed two years ago and a coach who can’t even muster an opinion on the replay booth controversy this week.

And some people think USC should go independent? With this crew?

  • It’s amazing no Pac-12 presidents have even expressed an opinion on the replay booth controversy. But maybe not when you consider this is the Pac-12.
  • One thing to keep in mind Saturday night: Colorado has never beaten USC and is 0-12 overall. USC has outscored the Buffs, 419-169.
  • Some are saying this was the best week of practice of the season for USC. The problem is they said the same thing before the Arizona game.

  1. The thing about being in a league is rules prevent free speech. I am sure off the record they are all ready to hold a public trial and hang somebody. When a group collectively has no comment it means if we could only talk.

  2. So what is the actual value of football to the university? Not as much as some fans think. Looking at USC’s last financial report – 2017 – the university had total revenue of $4.5 billion, which came from:

    34% – Health Care Services
31% – Student Tuition and Fees
    10% – Contracts and Grants
8% – Auxiliary Enterprises (includes the Athletic Dept and Coliseum revenue)
6% – Sales, Services and other
    6% – Contributions and donations
    5% – Endowment Spending

“Auxiliary enterprise revenue totaled $346 million in fiscal year 2017, an increase of 9 percent from 2016 revenue of $319 million, and represented 8 percent of the university’s 2017 operating revenue. Auxiliary enterprises revenue includes USC Athletics, as well as the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, Sports Arena, and University Club. Auxiliary revenue also includes revenue from the various service lines such as housing, hospitality, transportation, bookstores and the Radisson Hotel at USC.”

  3. SUCC is tailor-made to go independent:

Recruit cheating would be easy, and 12 non-competitive home FB games could be scheduled; pay-for-play would be de rigueur; DII and III cupcakes & creampuffs would litter all bozo athletic team game home schedules; and, it would allow SUCC to issue more self-proclaimed NC’s. Plus, the bozos wouldn’t have to schedule and lose to UCLA.

Lastly, and this is important, Commie SUCC would be a happy lush.

    1. Just rent,

Sc has never and will not play a Division II team. Speaking of cheating, how were those 11 banners bought? They were brokered through Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden and lHarrick.

Sc would never give up the opportunity to curb stomp the U Commie Lesbos A

      3. BS PT, the 2018 – 19 bozo bb schedule is front-loaded with cream puff dII and III bb teams. ****Correct me if I’m wrong PT, but wasn’t one of Andyain’twinning Asst. HC recently busted by the FBI for buying BB recruits for the bozo BB program. Of course, Andyain’twinning didn’t know squat.

  4. “Upset with by Washington State AD Bill Moos’ proposal to change the Pac-12’s revenue distribution, Haden suggested during an October 2010 conference meeting that USC would explore leaving the league, according to Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian in “The System.” But then Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby, the authors wrote, “had no patience for Haden’s bluster and called his bluff, saying everyone knew that wasn’t going to happen.”

    1. Hey ‘conflicted worldview (tebowobama – clever handle BTW) no idea Haden got called out as you noted here and also on another of Wolf’s topics yesterday by the Stanford AD….man how revealing is that?

Haden “I’ve seen the light….I know what’s right…..I’ll carry the fight…the Mayr plunder was tight man”

The day he’s called out publicly as he did to others by USC for what he did to the Mayr Foundation is the day respect begins to flow back to University Park. His bieng in charge of the Coliseum renovation is the worst – no blow back for Pattie boy not like what he did to McNair, Bush et. al. nah just more of the ‘to the manor borne’ and his offspring

  5. Haden spoiled his legacy as a player through his appalling lack of leadership as a Max Nikias’ politically-appointed AD; a lesson that has gone and will go unlearned by Pat Haden’s handpicked successor, Lynn Swann. Is a clean house, from head coach up, replaced impartiality with solid leadership, really too much to ask?

    1. Trojanation,

With due respect to you, I believe you can compare Haden the athlete to Haden the AD. Haden fought on the field. We don’t know if those traits from the AD character were with him as a student, but it did not show while playing fo SC

  6. Why wasn’t J.K. McKay babysitting Steve Sarkisian the way he was hired to babysit Lane Kiffin?

    Flashback to 2010:

J.K. McKay says he is not George Orwell, this is not 1984, and he is not Big Brother watching over Lane Kiffin.

“That’s not how I see it,” McKay says, “and not how Lane sees it, either.”

“Yes, Lane has been something of a lightning rod,” McKay says. “My job is to keep him off ‘SportsCenter.’ We’ll look up at the TV screen at that little scrawl across the bottom and I’ll say, ‘See, you’re not there. Way to go.'”

It was barely a month ago that McKay picked up the phone in his Century City law office. On the other end was his lifelong friend, Pat Haden.

“I remember exactly what I said,” McKay says. “You’re going to do what?”

Within an hour, McKay had left the law firm of Jeffer, Mangels, Butler and Marmaro and returned to the winning sports combination of Haden and McKay. Haden would be USC’s new athletic director and McKay would be his associate in charge of the football program.

“I was an easy convert,” McKay says. “This is a lot more fun than being a lawyer.”

What might have been if J.K McKay could have kept “7 Win Sarkisian” from falling off the wagon?

    1. Man that’s right JK McKay was to Haden like Art Fowler was to Billy Martin and a little more recent, Mickey Hatcher was to Mike Scoscia – no skill set but a faithful lap dawg Ego addicts always need a ‘yes man’….I truly forgot about JK –

One does wonder what he’s doing now for Haden? Batman at the ‘Pat Cave’ in Pasadena? Concierge at the Coliseum giving guided tours to the ‘swells’ that are primed to descend in that ‘parkland’ setting aka ‘Founder’s Park’ between Bovard and ‘Taper Hall’ on 10th Nov. vs. Cal?

Man watching that annual brahmin ritual of the rigid pecking order with the ‘de rigeur’ “cut crystal….linen….finest ‘Moge’ China and staff in ‘livery’ waiting on those ‘fuh-mal-ees’ and the ‘….to the hunt’ patina of ‘concern’

Why I must say it does remind one of a get together with former Senator ‘Lord’ Bentsen..all that was ever missing when he ran as Dukakis’ VP was him astride a quarter horse with some poor scullion holding the reins while he ‘quafed’ a mint julep.

      Where art thou JK?

  7. Sweet watching Trump ramming those three jurists (Rosen Scarsi and Blumenfeld) down ‘kamila’ and ‘COSCO corrupt Feinstein’s’ throats … man it is great to keep winning and winning and winning and smelling the decaying stench of the leftist back end of a horse mouth….”Jack our Jack….why? Bobbie….Teddie….Dukakis…..Jimmah….Lord (never worked a day in my life) Bentsen…Al (concierge par excellence) Gore……Bush (all 3 of them)…and the best ‘take down’….I give you …’la bruja’!
