I often disagree with Clay Helton’s personnel decisions. I don’t know why Jalen Greene started last year over Tyler Vaughns, Max Browne over Sam Darnold, etc.
But this week the coaches are complimenting cornerback Jonathan Lockett and Helton said last week was the senior’s best game of the season.
But where has he been? Lockett started five games in 2016 and was hurt last season. But he was healthy in spring and ready to go this year.
I couldn’t believe he wasn’t better than Isaiah Langley or Greg Johnson, whom Helton (and Clancy Pendergast) have played over him. I can’t really say he was worse than Ajene Harris in 2016.
But for some reason he has been forgotten this year. Maybe he doesn’t have a stage dad, which seems to get results at USC.
If you think I just have a grudge against Helton, I actually have a grudge against not playing the best players.
I didn’t understand why USC coaches ignored 6-7 tight end Cary Angeline last season. Look at the tight ends now. How are they doing? Angeline is starting for North Carolina State in the meantime and is something USC lacks: A really tall, rangy tight end who doesn’t commit penalties.
In the meantime, I’m glad Lockett is finally getting a chance this season.
“I don’t want to leave this place,” Lockett said Wednesday. “People were in my ear transfer, transfer here, transfer there, but I didn’t want to do that. I want to stay here, just grind it out and hopefully when my time comes be ready.”
He looks like a champ human being. Play well Jonathan. We need you Saturday.

On the money – this is the kind of fellow you want on the team.

You in fact disagree with Helton on anything Wolf right? Why make an exception? It is why you are a struggling sports writer and Helton is a major football program coach making millions. I am not a huge Helton fan but even less of a Scott Wolf fan. Become legit and maybe I will change my mind about you.

You’ve got to ask the questions because we can’t – they don’t know the playbook.. they don’t play hard in practice…. they’re not committed to the team. There’s a whole host of reasons why an apparently talented player is not seeing the field.
And you, hold a grudge??? No way!

Lamont,
You might be right about not knowing the playbook, but from what he said, it sounds like he gives it all. just my opinion.

Stop talking about the playbook at this point!! Does it look like everyone who’s playing knows what’s going on all the time?

Gern old stick, don’t forget “Caesar’s” titanic hubris cost him his life.
Of course Gern, we’re talking apples and oranges here, ’cause little Petey didn’t know squat.

I had forgotten Lockett was even on the team, but he looked good to me last Saturday. I think asking why he hasn’t gotten a sniff sooner is a valid question. Shouldn’t we be coming here for the answers to these questions rather than the questions themselves? I see these coaches in the middle of media scrums, Isn’t Scott Wolf in there somewhere?

Cary Angeline #6 North Carolina St, plays tonight at 4:30 pm on ESPN…..who’s he? A former Trojan, evidently not good enough for this staff. I got news for this staff: THIS TEAM ISN’T SUCCESSFUL ENOUGH TO LIMIT ROSTER PARTICIPATION. Cary left. Our tight ends don’t block or catch well enough to excuse any!!!!! After sitting out the first 3 games for transferring, he has 6 catches for 130 yards and 1 touchdown with a long play of 49 yards on a team with talented wide receivers who get the bulk of the passes. Does USC have any OTHER 6’ 7” tight ends? Any 6’ 7” receivers?

Who cares? 6 catches, uhoh! He left, just like others before and some still to come. Happens at every program from the top to the bottom.
If I was going to wish for a tight end to come back it’d be Wilson. Cary turned out to be soft, even Penn st turned him away before he landed in the acc.

Cary chose USC over his home state Penn State which probably didn’t sit well with them…if you ever looked at his original offer list, it was one of the most extensive one can have…offered by all the big schools, all over the country…..including the Bamas of the world!

You talk to yourself too much. Of course your also the only one who listens. And as far as JT goes, he’s still better than Sears. Why is it only those who DON’T go to practice that have/share your opinion on this? As is the case with so many opinions on football, most are uninformed and misguided. Remind me when the last time you were at/watched practice or sat in on meetings? Oh yeah, now I remember. Never.
Have a nice day.

He did…it was tough…but, watching the whole game, many NC STATE receivers dropped balls, at least 10 is a ballpark guess. Cary blocked well, though, which, I suspect, was the issue. He’ll start making those catches. Says here he’s classified as a sophomore, so, I’m rooting for his improvements. How many drops has USC had this year? Many. That’s the point: nobody’s exactly burning it up consistently enough to rule out one over the other, in many cases.

Wolf is SPOT-ON regarding Cary Angeline. He was tearing it up. How they could ignore him, not play him and then let him go was maddening. He was a future All-Conference selection at TE, given a season of experience.
