USC Morning Buzz: How Do You Like November?

Remember this September quote from Clay Helton: “I can’t wait for people see where we’re at in November.”

USC is worse now than ever this season and a 10-point underdog to Notre Dame. I remember two years ago thinking USC had a small chance to beat Alabama. I feel like it has no chance to beat the Irish.

Imagine how bad USC is against these two facts:

  • USC went 4-5 in the worst division of a horrible conference.
  • USC did not even play Washington or Oregon.

There was a rumor within the program before the UCLA game that Helton might start Jack Sears against Notre Dame if JT Daniels struggled. But if Helton started Sears and he played well, it would make Helton look even more foolish for going with Daniels all season.

It’s all a sad joke now. Now the only thing to do is wait to see when Lynn Swann pulls the trigger. Lynn? Lynn?

How is that meeting going to be with Helton today?

  1. I really don’t see any point in letting Helton coach in the ND game if he’s to depart at the end of the season, which seems to be inevitable. What, is he going to stay if they beat ND or something? As they say, a clean break is the best. Let him go now, and start coaching rebuilding immediately.

    1. But then again, I don’t really see how it benefits anything to fire him before ND. It’s not like we’re going to win the game anyway. He’s a decent man, let him have the last game with his seniors. Fire him next week and there will be no difference in the long run.

      1. Sure, it won’t make much of a difference if he leaves before or after the ND game because just about everybody thinks he’s already gone. And that’s what Swann probably sees as well.

        A decent man? Maybe, but not so much in the coaching department where he has actually ruined many kids’ chances of being drafted to the NFL by failing to develop them to their potential during his tenure.

        Being a “nice guy” is one thing, but he was seriously underqualified from the outset for the job, and he has essentially been paid millions to train for his job, and still will get paid millions to quit the job, which is why I don’t feel obligated to be melodramatic about his departure like some neutral-gender weirdo in here.

OH, REGALBRUINIRISH, BETTER TO BE A USC PSHYCO, THAN REGALRATTRAP….try singing along with The Beach Boys….because your version of “being true to your school” makes my skin crawl, makes me nauseous, makes me MAD! WHOEVER COACHES, WHOEVER PLAYS, don’t give in to the other side. Then, we can fix it.

        Both in stature and reputation, how is that 80 yard practice field doing and having to drive 35 miles one way to play at the Rose Bowl? You have squat. Scott-Thanks for pointing this out (I had raised this issue in a comment last week in this forum)-it was rather amusing (at this point, you have to maintain perspective, keep a healthy approach – it is just sports after all! – and find humor, if possible) to see the quasi-political sight frame shifting from “can’t wait to see what we look like in November” to “we’re going to be so good next year.” Again, as I pointed out last week, the USC football program has turned into a satire on the Twilight Zone episode “On Thursday We Leave For Home,” with Coach Helton playing the part of Captain Benteen…and us fans waiting for the rescue ship to arrive!

  5. It is obvious to everyone a wholesale change is needed. Swann can’t be so oblivious as to not see it.

    Next year, the schedule includes ND, Stanford, Washington, Oregon, so pencil in at those 4 losses if Helton was still in place.

    Toss in another loss or two, and it will be 7-5 or 6-6 in 2019 with Helton in charge.

    So if Helton is not fired next week, it is because the Acting President chose not to do so.

Completely agree (and have seen similar reasoning stated from many other quarters) – the only reasonable inference to draw from these facts and circumstances is that Swann’s hands are tied (or he believes they are tied) by the administration and/or instability thereof…as I have done over the past several years, this weekend I broke into my stash of USC football DVDs…this time I put on the BCS championship victory over Oklahoma…several things jump out from that, but among other things is that the ABC sideline reporter that night was…Lynn Swann…everything we know about his background (72 Trojans/74-79 Steelers) rules out that he doesn’t see this for what it is…so for some reason he has shown apparent hesitation in doing what needs to be done…so I guess we sit back (I’m guessing you are all like me, spending a 1000% more time than usual following USC football news) and wait and see how developments progress…

      1. That was an amazing game. I remember so many pundits who were picking Oklahoma to win. OK never knew what hit them.

        As a purely financial issue, you would think that they would make the change. SC football generates over $60 million in revenue. That could fall substantially next year with Helton continuing.

I agree that it is actually more dangerous not to act, given the pecuniary matters at stake…but like a lot of you, I’ve seen the same sort of bureaucratic morass, and suspect that’s what see unfolding here – no one with the power and/or will to act, even though it’s obvious action is necessary, proper, and less risky…

        FYI-the other thing that jumps out in rewatching that game (like so many in the PC era) was how, after OU scored on its first possession, the defensive adjustments were made fast, and the rest of the game was like watching an enraged monster octopus wreaking havoc on everything in its path…and the same thing on offense, with Norm Chow switching primarily to Lendale White and power runs, coupled with rolling Matt Leinart out of the pocket, and combining deep shots with lots of underneath stuff to secondary receivers (ie tight ends and fullbacks)…

    2. Sixty-Seven, what guarantee do you have the new bozo HFBC won’t also go 7 – or 6 – 6? No doubt this year’s SUCC seniors will move on and the new HFBC might just clear away SUCC’s FB program deadwood and tomato cans (similar to CK). That sort of new HFBC approach (Highly probable) may necessitate another losing record in 2019 & 2020.

      So SUCC sucks on for the foreseeable future.

Hate trolling, but…far more likely, provided the new head coach is simply capable (not even stellar), is the scenario that unfolded in 1987, when Larry Smith immediately took Ted Tollner recruits to three straight Rose Bowls (over the bruised/ruined Bruins – like how those go together? – of Troy Aikman)…mere competence is powerful at USC (and to be fair, at UCLA as well)…
