  1. Wait USC always brings the best coaches? I don’t believe Clay has been paying attention. We are in this mess because we don’t get the best coaches. Mark my words there will be opportunities in the NFL next season he could have waited and still had his reputation in tact. Now KK is a loser clown who has shown his true nature. He will be unemployed faster than Helton.

    1. Steve —- Clay relies on one simple, never adjusted-for-the-circumstances rule: always say something nice. Be thankful that, for once, he didn’t follow the whole Helton post practice halfwit script: “Happy Tuesday, everybody! Kingsbury and his agent played USC for complete chumps. Just like everyone else does these days. More power to them! With that I’ll take any questions, ya’ll got!”

    2. Steve, I agree 100% – Kingsbury is going to be an ‘on the job training’ rather than an experienced head coach and just signed on with a repetitive dumpster fire the AZ Cardinals.

      Spot on – he will regret this move and he will be tossed after year 3 because that’s all the guaranteed money he has with whatever he claims he signed and his lack of experience is going to bite him in the backend.

      Get lost Kingsbury – just another reason to root against the Cardinals for the same reason against the Rans – they both screwed Saint Louis.

      1. Agreed, Alv. Kingsbury’s first year will make Gruden’s look sizzling hot. In fact, given the coaching talent he’ll be up against, it’s possible he’ll lose every game [Of course Kliff’s predictable failure at Arizona doesn’t help USC one bit. Something that a lot of people are letting go unnoticed is Goofy Helton’s comment that they’re going to start looking for someone new in the “next few weeks!” Translation: They have no immediate Plan B! What you’ll see over the “next few weeks” is the same thing you saw from Helton after halftime in games where USC was down 10 points: Clueless shuffling. And a lot of babbling happy talk when the dust has cleared].

  3. Man…if KK wanted to be a pro head coach this year, why is he picking up a phone and calling a college team to ask for an Offensive Coordinator position? Dude, quit playing on the phone and prank calling people. Don’t you tell your agent to explore opportunities amongst the many NFL vacancies if that’s what you want? If you’re a hot name, don’t you wait and keep your powder dry for the best offer to come in? Why the hell are you picking up the phone to ask for a college OC position unless you really just don’t know what you want and are playing things by ear? I understand someone taking a pro job when it’s offered, but I’m having a hard time appreciating the way KK went about this. AZ thinks it has hired Sean McVay, but that’s not what they have. Some great OCs are great HCs in waiting and some great OCs are just great OCs. Unfortunately, everyone has to find out the hard way.

    1. Clay! Isn’t it obvious that Kliff considered USC his booby prize ALL ALONG? He looked and sounded half hearted about USC from the very first. Luckily for Kingsbury, Swann and Helton are such COMPLETE boobs they couldn’t read him any better than all those recruits who’ve left or “retired” after USC spent tons of time and money on them. But look at the bright side: Pete Carroll’s gonna crap on Kingsbury a couple of times every year —until about 2022 when Kliff’s ass is unceremoniously kicked to the curb. Where it belongs.

      2. I thought I heard him say that he wouldn’t have taken the job if he didn’t want to be here or something to that effect. Maybe I heard that wrong or wanted to believe it was true too much. IDK.

        It’s fairly breathtaking how fast AZ hired him. It seems they only did one interview and hired him at that interview. Did they even interview anyone else? The speed with which they hired him seems to indicate that they are sure they have the right guy. Arizona’s track record says they made the wrong choice and correspondingly, so did KK.

      3. Clay —this is for you (Sorry —I’ve been gone so long I forgot how to fit my reply into the right place in the blog discussion). Yes, Kingsbury made a few pro forma “happy to be here” remarks —- but just enough to keep him on the right side of saying “fuck this mess.” As the rumors of his disinterest grew, he had nothing to say (and for good reason —he was 100% dedicated to getting the hell out). It’s obvious that USC knew this, too. Kingsbury was never around after he signed his toy contract, he never spoke to our toy Athletic Director or our toy Head Coach after the initial flurry of negotiations was over. Shit, he didn’t even want a phone or an email address —-and neither did the coach he brought with him. Why? I bet the answer to that question can be found in Cam Smith’s exit interview: nobody takes Clay or Swann seriously. Once you’ve actually dealt with them, only one course of action makes sense —-move away from the wreckage before you become part of it.
        Luckily, we’ll get our revenge. Not on any football field that Troy plays on. But on every field the Cardinals play on.

      4. Clay, who made the mistake?? The lower level team from the b12 who fired him or the pro team from sons who hired him? Clearly if he’s good enough to be a pro coach TT screwed the pooch. If he’s not good enough to head TT then the cards did.
        Either way, he’s got his guy from westwierd that got his college coach fired and his first pro coach too, the fans are already chirping…the pouting one himself, rosen. Good luck with that.

      2. I agree, Clay. I wish Swann lured Kingsbury back with a 20 mil a year, 20 year contract, then turned around and broke it on the grounds of incapacity to contract (using his extension of Helton’s contract as evidence).

  5. When will people realize that the problems and solutions go much farther than Kliff or Clay? Trojans have a deep, deep systemic issue and it only starts with Swann and ends deep inside the USC machine. The saddest part is we are left watching Swann and Clay burn Troy to the ground and my guess is, by the time it all proves out, SC Football will have entered a very deep hole, with no conference strength to help them out and the same old, pompous, thick-headed leadership still calling the shots. They think Student Body left is still a play. You know the ones I’m talking about. The Hadens, the Max Nikiases….they all look and think the same.

    Until USC gets new leadership and new blood it will remain well below its potential and if you think some magical coach will come along and return things to status quo you better have a lot of patience, endless season ticket money to spend and cardinal colored glasses. We are witnessing the decimation of USC Football and no, this isn’t an overreaction. The conference is already on the edge of being out of the Power 5.

    Kliff was one and done anyways. USC will be better off with someone who will stay long enough to wipe his a$$ and endure one more season of nice guy, poor coach Helton.

    What a circus.

Is Helton unaware that his “credibility” as a head coach for the football program at SC with the student body, alumni, the community, as well as, the coaches across the nation is losing ground on all fronts and will be reduced to virtually nothing as he attempts to fix the problem he created in the first place? It’s either he is in full denial about the reality that he is not a top tier head football coach with a very impressive record coupled with demonstrated leadership skill sets; or has convinced himself that he is an effective head coach because Swann decided to retain him. Furthermore, does Helton think he will attract “top shelf” coaches to assist him at SC when he has clearly demonstrated that he is lacking in the leadership and organizational skillsets that great head coaches at colleges possess? Good luck with that.
    Most people with a conscious would quietly resign if they knew they couldn’t contribute something positive to their job. So Helton must think he’s “indispensable” at SC and will not step aside because he truly believes he is good for the program. All of this has generated another wrinkle on my forehead and probably several more hundred grey hairs on my head…

  9. I was excited about KK as I am usually an optimist when it comes to SC football. I called Helton, Hackett 2.0, tons of times, but know that until a regime change is made, I don’t see it getting better.
    Still, the recruits and Seniors deserve better although the cupboard at USC is never, ever bare. Even Hackett recruited Carson Palmer, Troy Polumalu, Saladin McCullough, and Matt Groettegood as a strong base for the early Carroll teams. I truly think that for Swann to save face he’d have to do one or more of the following: Fire Helton asap. Two, fire Clancy and hire a big time D-Coordinator. Three, hire a- waiting-in-the-wings- Head Coach/ OC ala KK.
    All around, not a good time to be a Trojan fan.

  12. I am cautiously optimistic per this entire mess because:

    1. Swann is in deep trouble and he knows it which means he better be listening to some knowledgable people something he is loathed to do – to figure out his next move or he knows it’s over.

    2. Helton is gone no matter what happens and it won’t be after the regular season ends in November because recruits have an earlier signing day than before – a new coach has to be secured to attract recruits. Helton is gone 20 miles from their cozy monument to basketball.

    The best is yet to come!

    1. 3. A shrewd individual knows the legacy of USC football – its’ pedigree as an all time top 10 program. Said individual will be moving to see the opening emerging a year hence and marketing himself for that opportunity ‘because’ this opening is a ‘once in a lifetime’ chance at glory and reputation.

      ‘blank’ Kingsbury …. good riddance to him.

      (W=Win; L=Loss; T=Tossup) Splitting the “tossup” games is 4-8. 3-9 wouldn’t shock me, and 5-7 or 6-6 would greatly surprise me.

  14. I love the expert opinions from the Trojan fan boy’s on how Kliff Kingsbury will fail at the professional level, and this coming from people who know nothing about how coaching works. These are the same fools who said Ed Orgeron couldn’t handle the USC job, and would fail at LSU . So I’m sure Kingsbury welcomes the negative input, because it will probably work in his favor. The Arizona Cardinals management knows more about running an NFL team, then any SC fan boy can imagine… 😂😂

Fred – I am one of those on here most critical of USC from top down, and I rarely disagree with you…but the Cards knowing more than…well, anyone…is a non-sequitur…they, the Bidwell Birdos, are historically the worst run organization in the NFL…were it not for some Kurt Warner-Anquan Boldin-Larry Fitzgerald HOF magic, and the one OT win they got with Carson Palmer, they would be like 0 for the last century in playoff wins…

      They hired him on a prayer hoping to catch lightning in a bottle…he will be fortunate to last two years…and unlike Josh McDaniels, Kliff won’t have Papa Bill to run home to after a failed first trip out of the nest…

      In contrast, I agree completely with your assessment of how Haden bungled the situation with Coach O – I was certainly among those who strongly favored his being hired permanently. And I take delight in every success he has down on the Bayou…he’s a QB/OC uptick away from turning the final corner there, and I hope like heck he gets to take at least one victory lap before he’s through. The only time USC fans have had an opportunity to feel truly good about the program was during that year, especially the night of the Stanford game…everything that has happened since had nothing to do with the program, and as this blogger correctly, to the annoyance of the fan boys, has pointed out numerous times, was attributable primarily to Sam…

      USC football is now a failed state…Rome after the barbarians…Kliff went mercenary, and no one can blame him…but he better put those checks in the bank…

  17. I’d like to pretend I’m speechless about Kliff Kingsbury— but I’m not…Swann and Helton? I can’t wake up from this nightmare…Swann’s arrogance, ignorance, and incompetence, continues to feed Helton’s delusion…in fairness, they did make changes to the staff and culture—Pendergas and the “best special teams, blah, blah, blah” remain…one last thing…I don’t want to hear or read about “gentleman” Clay, one more time..l’ve been a Trojan diehard since 1963….the great—McKay;the really good— Robinson I; the mediocre or—Tollner, Smith, Robinson II, Hackett…the Pete Carroll Renaissance; the NCAA-Bush years: Kiffin, Orgeron, Sarkisian.; and now the Haden/Helton/Swann off Broadway farce: “Arrogance and Ignorance… A Journey to Obscurity”….

    Hire an ADULT with a football history as a successful HC…there are lots of them, they know lots of great/good asst coaches…even KANSAS hired a real HC with a long successful resume…look for former Oklahoma coaches, look for former Nebraska coaches,SEC, ACC…coaches who never had recruits like SC has and gets …Go after Mike Leach,he takes 2 star players and develops them with real coaches,and real practices… they even run the ball.
    There are dozens, and now NFL ones like Pete Carroll was…he knew good asst coaches too, and could recruit straight from being in the NFL…

There are a lot of better alternatives available (I can think of two who I’ve suggested here before that I think could have USC back competing at the highest level in probably two years) – Kingsbury was a bad idea in the first place, although not as bad as retaining Helton/Pendergast. In my estimation Kingsbury did USC fans a favor by taking the Arizona job. This accelerates the process from probably five years to hopefully two years or less for us to have a reasonably competent coach hired.
