USC-Fresno State Pick The Score

Game Day is finally here!

After having to listen to Clay Helton for the past nine months, USC plays an actual game. And it’s time for you to pick the score.

As I said earlier this week, if this game were at the end of the season I would feel differently about Fresno State. But they have a new QB and a lot of new faces. The Bulldogs returned only 37 percent of last season’s offensive production.

On top of that, Helton wants to run up the score to appease fans and would no doubt like to inflate the stats of JT Daniels.

With that in mind, I’m going to pick USC, 45-17.

  1. If Helton actually can (i. e., is able to) run up the score to 45 -17 it would be a very nice start to 2019….

  2. tough one to pick … Penalties; 8 players (or 14) on the field during special teams; ummmm….with clay, bax, and clancy still around, 30-16…if SC had a real coach and ad? oh, never mind…it doesn’t…

  3. Scottie, I have to say I am surprised by your pick. Sounds like you think that Pete is back coaching the team.

31-13 Trojans. Hope that Stepp gets in early and has a huge game.

    1. Vaivae and Carr will get bulk of early work…hope they ALL have a great day. We’re going to need more than one stepping up to have a good year.

      1. Still improving as a pass blocker and receiver is what I’ve heard. He is improving both, spends a lot of extra time on the jugs machine.

      2. Yep. Hope everybody looks great. It’ll get team pumped for Stanford and Utah. [But it would be nice to see Stepp score on 67 yard touchdown—the kind of tackle breaking t.d. that’ll keep Pac 12 defensive coordinators up at night ].

      3. 67 — I’ve heard the same stuff as Pudly about Stepp needing to work on his pass catching — but, if we’re not breaking 3 yards per carry, I’d like to see what this hugely physical runner can do for us as a RUNNING BACK….

      4. Shut up , Pudly. Stop acting as if you’re connected to the program. Go study a 7th grade flag football team

  4. SC should win, but…………… Gomer is still in charge, the OL is no better, the DB’s are horrid, Chuck and Duck is still the QB, so I see the game being in doubt until the end and who knows how Gomer can screw it up.

This is without a doubt the worst coached USC football team ever, EVER.

    1. Let’s wait and see —if there are more than 2 or 3 false starts on the opening drive, I’ll agree with ya……

      1. 67 —If we can spread them out to one a quarter —and they all occur on the other side of the 50 yd line —-4 would be very ok with me.

  5. USC 33-24

More interesting to me is what happens if the game is in question late, the boos are showering (misting, given the attendance), and the players look like they are fully cognizant of just how long the season could be under that coaching staff…

What are the odds on Clay blaming it on “execution” (for those who don’t quite get it, that has long been his code word for blaming the players instead of taking responsibility) – I’ll give even money on that…

    1. If you’re close on the score, USC has plenty to worry about. Phil Steele’s Power Rankings have USC at 120 and Fresno State at 109. Assuming that the reliable Steele has accurately identified USC as being substantially more talented than Fresno, a score like yours would be attributable to coaching.

Just my best guess…I could see a scenario where they jump out quick…and if they do, the one time the Air Raid can be lethal is with a big lead…if the other team is down and starts taking risks, the snowball can start rolling (watching those Big 12 teams over the years, that is not an uncommon occurrence).
But I can also see the offense fizzling on the 1st series, Clancy dialing up a blitz that the other team sees coming a mile away leading to an easy fly pattern TD, and then you find out how much these assistant coaches value their future somewhere in the game…

      2. James — I see Fresno testing us long whether we screw up our first drive or not. Knowing that, I hope our new corners have been told to interfere with the receiver if they see they’re out of position to make the play on the ball.
[And USC defensive back coaches —make sure our inexperienced corners make Fresno earn their touchdowns inside the 10—I don’t give a crap if we get 3 dozen half the distance to the goal penalties —and the ball ends up on the one millionth inch line — don’t give them an easy path to 6 points]……

    2. James,

Look up the DC on the Fresno State website. He looks to be an up and comer. And, last year his D led the nation in points allowed in the 3rd quarter – meaning he’s got a knack for making halftime adjustments.

I say SC puts up most of their points in the first half. Whether that is enough to win is a different story. I say the game will be won or lost with how USC’s defense plays in the 2nd half. If they can stop FSU after the half, USC wins. If not, look for a game to come down to the last possession or within the last four minutes of the game.

  6. Flow! Cheers to a new year! We actually agree on your pick and the want to run up the score! If we’re wrong, it’s gonna be a looooong week for Helton. Or, maybe a really short one…

      2. 67 — I don’t know what else you can say when one team is closing in on 500 yards of offense and the other team can’t break 200…

  7. I recently found out that Fresno State’s quarterback is a below average player from West LA community college, so I’m picking USC . It’s probably going to leave a false impression on the Trojans Rah Rah’s, because they’ll probably think this win will translate into a great season…. NOT!

    1. Your last point is soooo on point. If SC wins they will all wet themselves and drool about how the team has turned the corner, the rah rah’s are and will always be brain dead

  8. Is it just me, or did anybody else enjoy watching that fat, bloated Lane Kiffin get his ass handed to him ? 😂. If his drunk girlfriend, Steve Sarkisian didn’t have Nick Saban to his hand, then he’d probably be a position coach, over at Nowhere Tech 😂

    1. For a team that has mostly 2 star recruits I thought FAU played a top 5 team filled with 5 star recruits pretty well, and they never gave up being down 28-0 in 1st qrtr.

      1. Hope Lane passes your sentiment along to the team, Tim —last year he publicly chided them after an early loss to a much higher ranked team —and the team never really recovered.

  9. I don’t care about the score, just win, look good and take the first step down redemption road. These provincial teams want to beat you worse than Ucla does. Break them early and get some young guys reps in the 2nd half. USC wins in a rout…
