USC Morning Buzz: “Coach Bohn” Will Hire Defensive Coordinator

Sources tell me the hiring of a new defensive coordinator will be directly handled by USC athletic director Mike Bohn.

That could greatly expand the list of possible candidates because it might not matter as much if Clay Helton is comfortable with the new coach.

It will also provide more insight into Bohn. If he hires someone Helton already knows, it will show Bohn is as weak with his football coach as he was with Carol Folt, when he carried out her orders keeping Helton.

It is also likely a good defensive coordinator will want to bring in his own team and might replace linebackers coach Johnny Nansen, defensive backs coach Greg Burns and defensive line coach Chad Kauha’aha’a.

Imagine being Burns or Kauha’aha’a, who were hired last year and now must be approved by a new defensive coordinator to remain at USC.

  1. Alright, I got an idea. Why don’t Bohn and Folt get rid of Helton immediately and become the head coach and DC? Who becomes which isn’t so important as they’re going to save the school some bucks and the team might still be as lousy as before.

  2. I hope Bohn hires the DC with the perspective of handing him the keys to the program, after tarmacing Helton following our upcoming blowout loss to Alabama. Kris Richard, Joe Barry, or Jack Del Rio, perhaps (the last one would be least likely, as I don’t think his ego could handle being “under” Helton, even if only in facade).

    1. IF Scott is correct on this one (and we may never get a straight answer from the parties involved), then, in effect, Helton has already been fired….. it just hasn’t happened publicly … YET.

      1. Yup. Bohn should bring in a Trojan horse head coach under the guise of defensive coach along with his hand picked new staff. Then he would have no problem in letting Helton go at a moments notice. Now all Bohn needs to do is announce that Helton has been transferred to the scouting department where SC can get some usefulness out of the wad of money they are paying him. Announce that Helton is going to be Coach Emeritus or something and erect a statue of him in a bathroom stall in Heritage Hall (like the statue of The Thinker only call it the non-Thinker).

  3. Gawd what a mess! If this is true, what is Bohn thinking? A few possibilities:
    1) attempt to show fan base some leadership.
    2) doesn’t trust CH’s judgement
    3) following CF’s orders to put CH in the background
    4) thinks he can make a better deal moneywise than CH
    5) laying the ground work to put his own coaching staff in place
Who knows? Regardless this flies in the face of all tradition and protocol.
The leadership of this once mighty institution is driving the whole thing in to mediocrity.
I wonder how it’s going on the academic side.

    1. I think a mixture of 2 and 5. It definitely shows a HUGE disrespect for Helton — and this is hopeful. I think he is working on manouvering him out, despite Folt’s apparent wishes/misjudgement/nonchalance.

      1. You’re right – this is a ‘around the corner’ move for Bohn to put the program on a semblance of an ‘even keel’ and what better way to do it than to publicly make Heltonska recognize he’s not only on a short plank job wise but he’s no longer the ‘de facto’ head coach.

    1. So true. It is like Bohn realizes what a buffoon CH is and is working around a decision he was forced to make. With a good hire he can save a little face. Still, I believe with others that there is much more to the story we do not know…yet.

  6. Clay Helton, if you are reading this, you are no gentleman. And, I fart in your general direction.

If you had any sense of honor and integrity, you would have resigned as did your colleague Chris Petersen, a true gentleman.

If you remain as head coach in the face of your AD chosing your own Defensive Coordinator, then it would be clear that you have no dignity either. At least be a man of dignity, for goodness sake. In retaining, at least, your dignity, by resigning, you might be able to find your way back to integrity and honor … back to being a true gentleman.

    1. You’re on to something, 67. Since EVERYTHING depends on Slovis next year, the season could be down the toilet by half time of the Alabama game unless someone not suffering burn out [i.e., Drevno] takes over the o-line coaching.

      1. Michael, Slovis probably saved Helton’s ass. Without Slovis, 8-4 could have been 6-6, which might have forced the idiots running the university to pull the trigger on Helton.

      2. Agreed, 67. Had J. T. not been injured, Helton would have gotten the boot. Although J. T. is talented, the team doesn’t play as hard for him as they do for Slovis. [Still I hope we have J. T. as a backup next season —regardless of who coaches the o-line there is no way the ‘too ballsy for his own good’ Slovis is going to make it through 12 whole games next year].

As someone who watches both SC and UCLA, my take on Jim Mora at UCLA was that he did a good job with the kids who were able to get into their school, but wasn’t loved by the big donors and famous alumni (CW, TA) who wanted their guy at the helm. It’s probably a lot harder to compete when the administration doesn’t give you the keys like Oregon did. Wonder how long Chip will want to stay in that environment ! Mora might be a good choice for the USC DC – NFL coaching experience, players like him, gets kids to the NFL, and probably would enjoy shutting down UCLA for a few years……

  8. Helton is paranoid and has always been so. Since he was elevated to head coach from the ranks, he assumes that he will be replaced from the ranks. Because Bohn isn’t totally immune to all of the boards, I suspect he has read the widely circulated article from Forbes magazine which pointed out Helton’s Peter principle tendency. (Actually in order to continue a cohesive thought I didn’t point out Clay doesn’t have a Peter that is principled so read this part later)
So (as I was saying before my brains interrupted) Bohn needs to do the hiring in order to bring in someone competent and able to perform the coaching at a level higher than the current head coach. The new person may even be named co-head coach. Hopefully Helton will be Petered out soon.

    1. Nice thought, Truman. But there’s ONE more factor involved. And it doesn’t have anything to do with coaching aptitude. Bohn will be careful to get someone who won’t rock the boat when he becomes coach. Helton himself is a historical accident —but his “type” is no accident. Bohn [and, more importantly, Folt] will want another Helton-type.

      1. Mike I doubt that – aka someone Fo,t and Bohn can ‘control’. That would be a huge plus for the two of them but right now- I’d say Bohn just wants someone who’ll get the alum and donors off his back – he wants someone who can win and do it consistently especially in the 2nd half.

Good article in yesterday’s LA Times on the four head coaches ib the playoff – all were assistants at the school before they were promoted. Orgeron replaced Miles, Riley replaced Stoops, Day replaced Meyer and Swinney replaced Bowden. Three of the four previous head coaches won a ‘NC’ (Miles, Stoops and Meyer).

If Bohn finds a capable ‘DC’/Special Teams etc….or if Harrell ramps it up next year that very head coach could be as the fur priograms just listed found save that none of them were tagged with a poor sap the like of Helton.

Winning solves everything – having a ‘controllable coach’ solves nothing

  9. I’m just scared Coach Bohn will try and hire our OC Arroyo away and make him your head coach. Worse yet, what if he hired away DC Andy Avalos and named him USC head coach? I would hope and expect them to turn Bohn down for the same reason Peterson turned Haden down when the job was offered to him in 2013 and Haden had to hire 7 win Sark. But if enough money is thrown at them, maybe they’d leave? Even still, there are still things money can’t buy, like competing for Natties year after year

  12. A few thoughts about football in general.
First assuming that Scott is correct and Bohn is selecting coaches does it really mean that Bohn is engineering a coup d’s tat?
Next after watching a few other games over the weekend, I am really wondering if College football at this level has become the new pro wrestling of the sports world. (You gotta read the whole thing) My son has really started to follow pro wrestling in the absence of real USC football. He has pointed out that pro wrestling is a sport designed to entertain like figure skating and gymnastics -both are scored by outside judges. The pro wrestling match starts with a “hero” and a “villain” and the refs are window dressing. Cheating is allowed, blatant cheating is part of the script. Still pro wrestling maintains a strong audience, even when most know the match is more theater than sport, complete with story arch and finish.
Carrying this idea over to division one NCAA football could just be coincidental, but there are a lot of points to ponder. First consider the targeting penalty. Nine times out of ten the helmet to helmet contact is called on the emotional leader of the defense. I don’t even think there has ever been an offensive player called for targeting, so this call is clearly intended to hobble the defense. Also watching these plays in slow motion it is easy to see the offensive player ducking into the helmet of the oncoming defensive player. It doesn’t take a sharp eye or keen mind to see that most often if the offense player had maintained the posture he was in when the defensive player committed to the tackle, the helmet would have not contacted the other helmet. So offensive backs are trained to dip before the hit, thus drawing the foul, which eliminates the defensive player. The penalty is far too excessive for an incidental clang of the helmets. Lower the head during tackling is never a good thing, but it happens.
Along with that is the “football move” after a catch rule. What does that even mean? I saw a player make a finger tip catch and take two steps before the defensive back dislodged the ball. It was ruled a fumble and was scooped up for a touchdown. But reply claimed the receiver didn’t make a “football move” and thus the play was an incomplete pass.
So is the receiver supposed to strike the Heisman pose after a catch or it doesn’t count? Doesn’t a couple of steps towards the end zone with the ball between both hands count? Going to replay just gave the official a chance to check the script.
Watching USC football over the years I have seen refs change the course of a game with their calls. We always claim the refs were biased. They call us but not them. I don’t need any further evidence than the outcome of the Ohio State game to know that NCAA football is scripted and USC isn’t going to be allowed to participate in championship football for another two years.
I guess this is something to chew on while Clemson is being handed the trophy after bogus calls next week. It’s all part of the script.

    1. You’ve hit on something most don’t see or don’t want to acknowledge – all of the changes in rules/enforcement have served to dumb down the game while at the same time increasing scoring and placing a premium on individual athleticism…fine in some respects, but the dumbed down (just like basketball – find the one athletic ball distributor and that’s the surest route to success) aspect diminishes the quality/enjoyment, particularly for those of us who either remember the “before,” or for a few of us, who are hockey fans (there’s even a tiny, tiny little bit of it at work there…but not much, and it has a self-correcting limit…the greatest team sport, and it isn’t even close). The one place in football you still see more of the complex approach that has been devolved out of the game is with offensive line play on championship caliber teams (not the best individuals, but the best at working as an ensemble while meeting a minimum level of strength and athleticism).

      Liked by 2 people

    2. The point about the rules and calls being very suspect isn’t lost upon me or many people. SEC refs first had a rep for fixing games for the conference (look it up, there’s whole blogs and sites about it). But it’s been clear over time that some fixing is part of the game, on various levels to be guessed at.

Part of being an SC fan or blue blood fan is that you assumed you weren’t going to be a victim, much, but over the years that’s not so, largely because SC is not a real political player nor is the PAC 12. SC can’t even be functional much less be involved on that level, and the same could be said for the conference, so even if SC wasn’t dysfunctional as a program (and at this point I think that it may actually be harming some of the money in CFB/media) it still has the need for a level of political competency that doesn’t exist with Folt and Bohn, and Larry Scott.

Helton: You know Mike, Clancy and John are very special. We’re building a winning culture here and you’ve finally given me the tools. And don’t forget about all our injuries and how our record improved. Can we keep them?

Bohn: Clay, just shut the f*ck up.

    1. I agree that the relationship between Bohn and Helton is now very strained. Bohn was forced to keep Clay. And after the early signing day, Bohn feels that Clay lied to him about the potential for recruiting wins. Folt probably feels the same way.

Now Bohn will trust Clay on nothing. The only question is who is protecting Clay? It is unfathomable that Folt is willing to stick her neck out this far for Clay after being at USC for only six months. So it comes from above – Caruso. So what is the damage Clay can do if he is fired?

Helton knows he’s gone – we’d all rather he was actually gone – but – Helton knows it is over no matter what he does….and yes I realize we have to endure another 11 mos. of this mess. I still think he’ll quit.

      1. Ok perhaps or yes you’re right.

Riddle me this – so many bemoan the days since PC left and with cause. Some also state USC hadn’t been relevant for some 25 years back to 1978. Ageed….however also note the same said for AL – once Bryant retired with his last ‘nc’ in 1979 the next one for AL was 1992 under Stallings AND then the long march until Sabin arrives – his 1st in 2009
NE – identically Osborne’s last was also when he retired 1997 but unlike AL, no one since has raised NE anywhere near what Osborne did. = 22 yrs.
PA St. – last NC 1994 under Paterno = 25 yrs.
        OK – 2003 under Stoops = 16 yrs.
Miami – last ‘NC’ 2001 under Larry Coker = 18 yrs.
        MI – Carr in 1997 = 22 yrs.
        ‘the princess’ – 1988 Holtz = 31 yrs.

Of the ‘legacy’ top 10 programs – OH St., AL and FL & FL St. have won within the past 11 yrs

What do the successful programs have in common that the ‘also-rans’ do not? A great head coach. NE, PA St., MI, Miami, OK or ‘the princess’ are not going anywhere with their current head coaches just as we are not ‘but’ this train wreck that Folt and Bohn have co-created has blown back on them such as they have never experienced before.

You watch Folt shut her mouth after Helton gets canned – I hate having to wait a year but I also believe the next pick can be a ‘home run’ esp. if it comes from a current or yet to be hired assistant.

  15. Just when I though the quality of observation of the remaining interested fans was withering (I’d have to include myself), you guys have hit the nail on the head. Obviously this is awful.

The head coach is incompetent because he’s weak, paranoid, a poor leader of men, who partners to run an offense that heavily burdens his defense, making it shit, leading to these constant house-cleanings (on both sides of the ball) of men who were otherwise perfectly respectable.

Taking more responsibility from him in hiring a key new subordinate on defense only compounds the problem. An independent, experienced offensive coordinator could have possibly been a hire of someone powerful enough to dictate a change- the offensive coordinator decides what happens and makes decisions, defensive coordinators no matter how independent just deal with whatever happens as a consequence. As a famous coach once quipped a DC really means “damage control”.

That’s all the more true here because the Head Coach has a background as OC, and Harrell’s system is simply a continuation of the HC’s system– a pass happy, no ball control, no protection, totally shotgun, 5 wide out every down, no TE blocking, no real 2 back set, no roll outs and all passes to the frontside of the play and to the boundaries or slants, (thus pressuring ANY DC to have to deal with being on the field too long, a high number of plays, quick changes of possession, tired linemen, stressed DBs, bad field position …)

Moreover, no DC hire is going to be a qualified new Head Coach in the inevitable firing of Helton, but it will be new contracts that have to be bought out, a new system to be learned in a year, the worst of all possible worlds.

  16. It is still possible that Bohn fires Helton. As he goes out to the top DC candidates and they all turn him down, Bohn could use this as a reason that Clay cant stay as HC.

The key is that Bohn must refuse to hire an inexperienced DC or a DC who is not with a winning, top program.

But the real question comes back to why they would keep Helton with all the damage he is doing? Neither Bohn, nor Folt, are the person who made this decision. There is only one person above them that could have made this decision – Caruso. So why does Caruso insist on keeping Clay, despite the fact Clay is destroying the football program and also turning the alumni base and donor base against USC?

There is something real dirty here folks. The only explanation is that there is some reason Clay cannot be fired, and it goes beyond the monetary considerations.

  17. Just when you thought these idiots (Folt, Bohn and Clay Helton) could not get any worse, they out do themselves. First, Carol Folt has NO BUSINESS being USC President. Completely unqualified and incompetent at the job. Mike Bohn should have NO SAY in who gets hired. The guy is a disaster himself, and a loser. As quarterback of the Kansas Jayhawks, he went 2-7-2. Came in 7th in his conference that year. This poser has never won a National Championship in football at ANY university where he was Athletic Director. Who the fuck hired this idiot at USC ? Folt and interim AD Dave Roberts ? Or, was it Billionaire Rick Caruso, attorney Suzanne Nora, and others on the Board of Trustees who selected this guy ?

At the University of Idaho, Bohn was referred to as “Mr. Excitement” and he had “an exciting personality.” Seems he got more excited with each new job he got with increased pay. This guy is a major con man. Just look at his record, and you’ll be scratching your head (maybe other parts too) about how ANYONE would want to hire him at their school. Bohn was at U. of Idaho from 1998 to 2003. Not a single national championship won by that school in all those years. His football teams went 7-4 (1999), 5-6 (2000), 1-10 (2001, 2-10 (2002) and 3-9 in 2003. Average game attendance during these football seasons was LESS than 17,000 per game.

Bohn then jumped over to San Diego State in 2003. The 2003 football team went 6-6 and the 2004 team went 4-7. The 2005 team went 5-7. Bohn tolerates mediocre coaches and crap football programs. He has never been a winner.

Bohn then jumped over to U. of Colorado in 2005. At Colorado he lasted from 2005 to June, 2013 when he was forced out in June 2013 and given a $990K settlement to leave. During his tenure as Athletic Direct at Colorado, that school won only a single national championship (in men’s cross-country. No other teams under Bohn’s watch won a championship. 8 years AD at Colorado and he has nothing to show for it.

Bohn then spends 8 months wandering the country in search of a job, and claims he was looking at other athletic programs to see how they succeed. Must not have learned anything on this trip.

In 2014, Bohn gets the AD job at Cincinnati. Cincinnati has only won 2 National Championships ever (1961 and 1962). Not a single National Championship won by any sports team at Cincinnati during Bohn’s tenure there. His 2014 football team went 9-4, 2015 was 7-6, 2016 was 4-8, and 2017 was 4-8. This guy tolerates bad coaching, and shit teams. He is unable to recognize football talent and he is a plodder. Collects a big paycheck and doesn’t give a fuck about the Athletic Department he is leading.

Along comes Lynn Swann who is fired as USC AD in September, 2019 after tolerating Helton’s incompetence and giving Helton a contract extension (why ? ). Folt, who comes to USC as Presidentt in July, 2019, hires interim AD Dave Roberts (attorney who was by Nikias’ side during 6 years of scandals and criminal conduct) and together these two geniuses decide to undertake a search for a NEW AD. The search committee is also comprised of Suzanne Nora, a member of the Board of Trustees (USC Class of 1979 and Harvard Law grad (claims on her law school application she was Native American). With this brain trust, these people hire “Mr. Excitement” who doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground, and he immediately supports the continued employment of Clay Helton as Head Coach. Helton fires his staff and now we expect Bohn to evaluate candidates for these coaching positions ? Really ? This is like a nightmare and a comedy where you cannot get the monkey off your back.
