USC Defensive Coordinator Search Circles Back

I hear Clay Helton spoke again to Joe Barry on Thursday as a follow-up to their initial interview.

Can you imagine a conversation between Helton and Mike Bohn:

Helton: “Well, I spoke to Joe Barry.”

Bohn: “Who else?”

Helton: “Well, I’m going to speak to Joe Barry again.”

Bohn: “Who else did you have in mind?”

Helton: “Joe Barry.”

Bohn: “Here’s some other coaches you should talk to.”

  • Meanwhile, here’s a podcast I did on the LSU-Clemson game that also includes plenty of USC talk (of course).

    1. marvienna —Know what’s funny? Folt thought “If I can just be real, real, real careful every day —I can slowly put all these admission and athletic department messes behind me. But she needed to do just the opposite to save the university …and herself. She needed to be bold as hell. James Baldwin said “when you see trouble across the street, walk toward it.” He knew that any other approach was going to bring it to YOUR side of the street. Carol could have gotten off to a great start —but she chickened out….

Bohn: “Who else did you have in mind?”

    Helton: “Joe Barry.”

    Bohn: “You’ve got integrity Clay.”

  2. The saddest aspect of this – other than the obvious it should not be happening to this program – is that this is less than not a surprise…almost all of us on this site could have written this script over a year ago…

      1. craig — Like a lot of people, I’m beginning to wonder if Bohn came to work THINKING he had a job to do (bring back USC sports) but found out that wasn’t really the job at all (i. e., he was actually to do as little as possible…. without looking like he wasn’t doing anything) …

      2. gt —Guess what? The goal posts have been moved –USC’s not content anymore with just being Stanford —it wants to be Georgetown 1993. Our poor university is being run by a goofy bunch of ass backwards phonies who don’t know the world has already turned it’s back on their kindergarten viewpoints…

  3. Helton: “Don’t worry coach I got this, if all else fails we’ll fall back on me being D coordinator.”
Bohn, “ wow what integrity. By the way Clay where are we on the face kick?”
Clay, “Coach the player claims it was a love tap- you need help up bro-besides we need the kid and Clancy dealt with it on the sidelines… Look a game ball from the rose bowl we won, with your name on it… imagine that!”

Bohn-“uh okay thanks Clay… I’ll put it next to the ball from that other game you won since I got here. “

    1. Luckily for Bohn the schema for the “little as possible” approach as already been perfected by mayors, governors and senators all across the country….

      1. When Gore Vidal was running for governor of California against little Jerry Brown he couldn’t resist the following comment: “There have always been problems you couldn’t touch. There have always been sacred cows you had to leave alone. But this idea of just doing nothing —wow, that’s a whole new thing.”
Ladies and Gentleman I give you Carol Folt and Mike Bohn…

  4. Wolfman, there is no doubt in my mind that you captured the essence of their conversation…
Clay always maintained it’s not the size of the rolodex but the quality. [Guessing that his definition of quality is “Anyone who talks for more than 1 minute to him is a quality person”]
Also, Clay knows what he wants and will hold his breath until his face turns blue. That’s the definition of Inegrity, right?

  5. Why would they want Joe Barry? He’s been a DC 4 times in his career. In 2007 and 2008 he was the DC for the Detroit Lions. Both years the Lions finished last in the NFL in defense. Then he was the DC for the Chargers in 2015 and 2016. In 2015 the Chargers were 20th in defense. In 2016, they were 16th. There are better DC’s out there. What about Chris Richards, Charlie Strong, Rocky Long, Zach Arnett, Pete Kwiatkowski, Ryan Nielson and you could probably fine more if you check out the smaller colleges and do your homework. I see no reason why Joe Barry will be any better than Clancy. Actually, Clancy has a better resume than Barry does. At least he’s had some successes in his career as a DC.

      1. P. S.
It’s not as easy as it looks to perpetually be able to come up with a 3rd rate staff. USC is the only school in the Pac 12 that’s been able to do it year in and year out for 10 whole years….

      1. I don’t remember him saying that Ed Orgeron should be the coach. I remember him saying how he was outcoached vs ND and UCLA. Wolf likes to circle around to seem as if he cares. But……
