New USC Student-Athletes Group Speaks Out On Racial Injustice

USC track star Anna Cockrell, an NCAA champion in the 400-meter hurdles, has tweeted out a statement from a new group, United Black Student-Athletes Association.

Below is the two-page letter from the group to Mike Bohn and the USC athletic administration.

There’s an interesting passage where the group demands the right to free speech and no retaliation for protesting or making public statements.

  1. Anyone saying scottie doesn’t enjoy the political slant this site has taken should probably reconsider after this post. Seems he loves the traffic it’s brought.

    1. Well, ucla is easy because one and only one. Gary Beban, 1967. I remember watching the game of the century with my dad. Still can hear may dad saying “without Gary Beban, this game would be 49-0.”

I believe Beban threw for over 300 yards that game, which was unheard of at that time.

Every good player from the So Cal area would either be on SC or UCLA, and there was great respect and fierce competition between the two teams. Seemed like the whole city would shut down on that Saturday in November. It was easy at that time to make the case that USC-UCLA was the best rivalry within conference. Better than OSU-MIchigan (try to stay awake for those games…) Nebraska-Oklahoma, Texas-Arkansas, ‘Bama-Auburn.

I met Beban later on. Great leader and he really cares about people. Helped fellow Heisman winner Johnny Rogers, who struggled with drugs. Rogers now working with kids in Omaha.

      1. Well stanfurd had Plunkett who threw to Randy Vataha and the zeroes had mariota. The buffs had Bienemy, I think he was another Socal kid out of Bishop Amat.

      2. Was Terry Baker the winner at OSU? He is the only guy from there I can think of, but on the other hand, he played around the time of Beban and OJ.

    2. Eric Bienemy was indeed a fine Buff TB and helped lead them to their “natty.”
(though the Buffs sometimes get 5 downs to be awarded a key, game=winning first down). He was really fun to watch back in those days.
EB has been a fantastic assistant coach in the NFL. Likely time to get a HC position.
He was not awarded the Heisman, however.

However, the CU Buff who earned the Heisman was Rashaan Salaam–a true workhouse talent. I think Mr. Salaam was brutally used by the Buffs coaches with 30+ carries per game for several seasons and was worn out by the time he got to the pros–though he had 1 or 2 great years with the Bears.

Sadly, Mr. Salaam was found deceased on a bench at Eben Fine park in Boulder of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He carried a heavy burden before and after his football years, and many of his former teammates tried to help him along.

Like so many of his generation, I suspect that Mr. Salaam suffered mightily from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and struggled to cope with the physical and emotional pain of that disease along with the other chronic illnesses which FB begets.

    1. We can always donate the medication. Up to 600 million (mostly Sub-Saharan Africa) are hit by Malaria every year, and up to 1 million kids under 5 die from the disease.

  5. I think that the UBSAA likely has some valid points and will hopefully put up a consistent platform to which the University can sanction. However, within themselves they will have to be consistent and measured and generally represent their University in a progressive light and not in a destructive light.

Back in the days of live attendance of sporting events of 40,000 to 80,000 at the Coliseum (or the Galen or Dedeaux, etc) it was customary that we all stood up, doffed our caps, and were respectful of the Nation’s anthem. If no one attends in person, then who cares? Either way, it seems that the prudent thing to do is either keep teams in the locker room for the National Anthem or just eschew the National Anthem at Professional and College sporting event.
