USC Says Faculty, Employees Will Keep Working Off Campus

USC provost Charles F. Zukoski sent out a lengthy letter tonight that said faculty and employees will continue to work remotely with no date of return given.

USC is in Phase 2 of four-phase plan to return the campus to normal operations.

“While our phased approach is managed centrally, each school and department has been asked to submit for approval its own phased campus restart plan that adheres to the University’s guidelines,” Zukoski said. “This ensures that we are able to think through an exhaustive list of contingencies and school-specific needs, and that we remain nimble, ready to move forward – or if needed, back – through each phase as conditions dictate.”

USC previously said face masks will be required of anyone who returns to campus.

        Judge denies request to block Bolton book

        A federal judge has denied a Trump administration request to block former national security adviser John Bolton’s book from being published.

        U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth wrote in an order released Saturday that “while Bolton’s unilateral conduct raises grave national security concerns, the government has not established that an injunction is an appropriate remedy.”

        The judge noted that the Justice Department’s push for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction comes after the book has been printed and shipped across the country ahead of its scheduled release on Tuesday.

      3. gt — The defacing of the statues of Don Quixote and Sancho paying homage to the great Cervantes (who was, ironically, also prosecuted by the “Original” Court of the Inquisition) is sad news. I recall wiping the cobwebs from these statues once when I went for a walk in Golden Gate Park after a long day at the Criminal Justice building.

  4. So, yesterday I talked about using the word “chick” and I just want to be clear that I don’t think (you) guys should be calling women chicks.

    Along those lines, I also want to use the opportunity to mention that the “isms” have power because of the systemic threat that they represent. That’s why it’s a false equivalency to put up videos of a black person abusing a white person as if it’s comparable to the Floyd video as an example of systemic racism. There is no systemic racism against white people in America and it takes an especially ignorant and/or insincere and/or twisted kind of person to try and draw a parallel with YouTube videos. This is a person whose ignorance and corresponding interest is to be “inciteful” (to coin a phrase) rather than insightful. I’m sure he would happily, in his gleeful ignorance, vote for someone just like him.

    3. Clay: Slavery is an example of systemic racism. Restrictive covenants on real property deeds are an example of systemic racism. Jim Crow laws were systemically racist. The killing of Mr. Floyd by officer Chauvin is not an example of systemic racism. Had the system been racist, it would have protected Chauvin from punishment for his illegal and racist actions. That did not occur. The opposite occurred. Chauvin and the other cops were immediately fired. They were investigated by the criminal justice system and murder charges were filed. They were arrested and are now in jail. A trial will be held, they will be found guilty, and they will spend the rest of there lives in jail, at least Chauvin will.

      How is a legal system that puts Chauvin in jail for the rest of his life systemically racist.
      Are you aware that the caption of the Minneapolis police department is black. Is he part of the systematically racist system?

      You say that there is no systematic racism against white persons at this time. I think your right. In 1987, California voters passed proposition 209. It prohibited racial discrimination in college admission and hiring decisions. The implementation of this law got rid of reverse discrimination. The California legislature is now trying to repeal proposition 209. If that occurs, you will be legally able to discriminated against whites and asians at USC. Oh happy day.

      1. Plow, all of that is happening because they were caught on camera doing it and for no other reason. Had it been a normal situation, their reports wouldn’t have reflected the reality of the killing and it would’ve just been another black criminal who resisted and deserved to die. Here we have it on film and people such as yourself are still trying to deny racism is a part of the system. Had it not been filmed, those guys would have gotten off scot free by a system that allows for abuse under the color of authority. The examples that you give are examples of blatant and overt racism, but racism has been forced (kicking and screaming) to evolve beyond that.

        Do you honestly believe the system is even-handed?

      3. Keep in mind that you’re talking to someone who has been arrested for simply not having ID on him. One of the reasons you arrest someone for that is because you suspect they’re lying when they give you their info and it comes up clean. Another good reason to arrest someone for that, even if they are clean, is that you can make sure they aren’t clean anymore. Do you honestly think that if I was some blonde chick I would ever have to consider these kinds of things?

    1. Clay: I am not saying that there are not racist cops. I am not saying that there are not weak or racist cops who cover for racist cops who use their position to commit violent acts on others. But that is not systemic racism for the reasons that I stated. To have systemic racism, the laws themselves must be racist and that is not the case. Further, I do not understand how you can have a system of racist application of the laws when in many of these cities such as Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, D.C. ect., the mayor is black, the police chief is black, the district attorney is black, and a majority or significant number of the police officers are black. It makes no sense.

      I know that there are some terrible videos out there. But that is not the best evidence. You need to look at the FBI crime statistics. Very few unarmed black men are killed by cops in America. 9 or 10 for 2019. 3 so far in 2000 including Mr. Floyd. That number does not suggest a pandemic. Maxine Waters said that every day cops wake up in the morning with the intention to hunt and kill black people. That is an outrageous comment from a congressman and totally unsupported by fact.

      You ask if I believe the system is even handed. No, I don’t. I suspect a lot of racial profiling goes on. Many blacks are poor. They can not afford an attorney and have to rely on overworked public defenders. Juries are probably more suspicious of black males than others. But I reject the notion of systematic racism. I also believe that most people, including white cops, are good and decent and I am saddened that many are refusing to acknowledge that fact. I also believe that we are a good and decent people and it saddens me when people say that America is a racist country without any real evidence to support that claim. How does a racist country elect Barack Obama for two consecutive terms. If America is racist and wants to hunt down and kill black people, why do hundreds of thousands of black Africans seek to immigrate to this country.

        I made it thorugh your first paragraph and that’s part of it. Rather than try to responnd to everything, let’s look at that part. Keep in mind, I know you’re using talking points and because I play both sides, I don’t have any.

        With everything you say, it’s like you need racism to be overt and hit you over the head. You’re basically saying that a separate code book would need to be created in order for there to be systemic racism. So, unless we uncover that code book, there’s no systemic racism? You do understand unequal treatment under the same laws, right? If you don’t believe there is unequal treatment…we really can’t talk.

        With regards to the actors in the system and their race… What is a system other than something with different parts. The fact that you can relpace the parts and have the system work the same is simply a testament to the power and entrenched nature of the system. Racism is engrained in this country and if your history classes didn’t teach you that…if your own eyes don’t tell you that, what can I do for you here?

        That’s in response to your first paragraph and you will no doubt have a response to this. Can you understand that I have no desire to spend my Saturday night trying to turn you and your feverish friends around?         That’s part of your 2nd paragraph… Again, you need to be hit over the head before you’ll acknowledge a problem. How often does the abuse have to result in death before you see the abuse as a problem? Try to understand that the abuse itself is a problem for the people who suffer it and they don’t need to look at the death count to know it.

        Talk to Congresswoman Waters about what SHE said.
