USC Sunday Buzz: A Night To Remember

I feel like any time I research USC in the 1950’s or 60’s, there was an incredible amount of formal dinners.

This one caught my attention: On Nov. 28, 1958, USC held a “men’s football dinner” at Town and Gown.

This was the night before the USC-Notre Dame game at the Coliseum. That fact did not stop USC coach Don Clark from attending. Notre Dame sent athletic director Moose Krause and Father John Wilson, who was assistant to school president Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh.

It gets better. UCLA athletic director Wilbur Johns and football coach Bill Barnes were in attendance. Can you imagine Dan Guerrero and Chip Kelly coming to a USC dinner the night before the Notre Dame game?

Do you recognize the emcee on the far right in the picture above? More on him later.

There was also entertainment as ventriloquist Edgar Bergen came with his sidekicks, Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. Singer Sue Raney was also part of the program. Twenty years later, Raney sang the national anthem at Dodger Stadium before Game 6 of the 1978 World Series.

USC also had athetic director Jess Hill, president Norman Topping and chancellor Rufus von KleinSmid at the dinner and the fathers of the USC players were introduced.

The emcee? It was Chick Hearn, who did USC football and basketball games from 1956-61 before becoming a Lakers legend.

A few weeks later, some of the same people had to do it all again for the USC football banquet.

From left, athletic directorJess Hill, Chancellor Rufus von KleinSmid, Notre Dame’s Fr. John Wilson, USC president Norman Topping, and General Alumni Assn. president Eber Jaques listen to Chick Hearn.

    1. You hero the anti-American Peaceful Moderate Democrat AOC is bragging about interfering in the democratic process enshrined in our Constitution of the right of the people to peaceably assemble.

      2. I wondered how TulsaTrojan aka senileobama and Owns already seemed to know last night what was happening at the rally before it started. Haldeman and Erlichman would be envious of the Peaceful Moderate Democrat/Never Trumper Steve Schmidt anti-constitutional antics.

      3. According to Tulsa officials approximately 6200 deplorables attended Trump’s Tulsa campaign FLOP.

Put another way 22, just 0.0062 of the 1 million ticket holders, that Trump claimed, attended his BEEG FLOP.

    1. Thanks for posting this, Pudly. Hope everybody here takes the time to listen to Sam …and learn from him. Good man.
Pudly– what “hillbilly” remark are you referring to? Has it been removed?

      1. There were many men on that field that day, that Sam was held up as an example doesn’t nor should it diminish what they all felt and what the team accomplished.

      2. Check out Sam warning everybody [before the 2016 Alabama game] that “leadership” would be required if things went south early. Helton wasn’t listening, I guess. btw, it wasn’t Helton [or Sam Darnold] who offered off the field leadership when Penn State went up 2 TD’s in the 4th quarter in the Rose Bowl. It was JuJu —he was moving up and down the sidelines telling the players to calm down and focus and they’d still win. I loved watching that — we need some of it this year —cuz Helton is the same lost old man today ….only worse…..

      2. No one talks about how the socialists all impose their “free will” upon all those landowners, business people, and residents without the right to speak out. Perhaps I’ll post videos of the “people’s” response when there’s an opinion that isn’t homogeneous with their doctrine.
Always funny how things work with these socialist wonders.

    1. You are so proud that your fellow Democrats coordinated a phony registration scam to suppress the turnout at POTUS’ Tulsa rally. Donald Segretti, an aide to Richard Nixon, went to prison for pulling stunts like that.

Oh BTW 22, the Tom Petty family had to send the Trump Campaign a cease and desist order to stop using TP’s “I won’t back down” music for Trump’s campaign.

Trump is so cool he has to steal good music for his campaign.

      1. MG do you think the Trump campaign has a cognizable cause of action — and maybe even grounds for a TRO — based on the tort of “intentional interference with prospective economic advantage?” From what I’ve read, the elements vary from state to state, but courts generally hold that the elements of the civil wrong are:

“(1) an economic relationship between the plaintiff and some third party, with the probability of future economic benefit to the plaintiff; (2) the defendant’s knowledge of the relationship; (3) intentional acts on the part of the defendant designed to disrupt the relationship; (4) actual disruption of the relationship; and (5) economic harm to the plaintiff proximately caused by the acts of the defendant.”

Sounds to me like the campaign has a case. But you are the expert. What do you think? I find it ironic that the bunch who complain about “suppression” are bragging about doing just that.

      2. I hope Trump’s legal team [which isn’t that great, by the way] and the Justice Department [which is so overloaded they can’t see straight] get to work identifying the federal election laws that were violated. AOC’s statement —of and by itself — is more than enough to launch an investigation.
        The only problem…..?

“Democrats acknowledge Hickenlooper has made serious mistakes on what was supposed to be a glide path to the Democratic nomination. After being cited for contempt this month for initially failing to appear before Colorado’s Independent Ethics Commission, Hickenlooper was fined $2,750 for two violations dating back to his second term as governor.
He’s also apologized for comments about race, including responding to a question about the Black Lives Matter protests in a recent forum by saying the phrase means “every life matters,” echoing a common refrain among conservatives.”

We have tremendous, tremendous requests for tickets like, I think, probably has never happened politically before.” The unusual use of I guess and I think is a signifier of the president’s false modesty: he knew, with Trumpian certitude, that he was going to break some attendance records in Tulsa.
