Former USC Pole Vaulter Mel Hein Jr. Dies

Mel Hein Jr., a pole vaulter who was a member of two USC track national title teams, died Wednesday of a brain infection. He was 79.

Hein Jr. set the world indoor record of 16 feet, 5 3/4 inches in the pole vault in 1965 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. He later won three City titles as the track coach at Taft High School in Woodland Hills.

Mel Hein Sr. was an assistant coach at USC from 1951-65 and no coach around USC bested his background.

He played for the New York Giants from 1931-45 and was the NFL’s MVP in 1938 despite playing center. Hein Sr. was a member of the NFL’s 50th and 75th anniversary all-time teams. He was an all-pro five times and led Washington State to an undefeated regular season and Rose Bowl berth in 1931. Hein Sr. coached the defensive line, linebacker and offensive line at USC.

He also served as the team scout, and often missed USC games because he was on the road watching the next week’s opponent.

Mel Hein Jr. competes in the pole vault against Oregon at the Coliseum in 1962.

I don’t blame y’all though because USC has been dead for over 10 years!

      1. The Steele Dossier was a Republican Project, gotroll22 is too stupid to know any better.

Even people in the sticks know how the dossier got started…from The Columbus Dispatch

Letter: Steele dossier began as Republican project

Two letters in Tuesday’s Dispatch referred to the infamous Steele dossier.

Both Steve Crane and Tom Broyles cast suspicion on the dossier: Crane by charging that the Democrats bought it from Russia (Russia selling information that implicates Russia?) to Democrats, and Broyles by claiming the Clinton campaign bought it from Christopher Steele, identified simply as a foreign agent.

The facts tell a different story. The document was written by Steele, a British MI6 agent, at the behest of Fusion GPS, which had been hired initially by conservative Republicans seeking the skinny on Trump.

        ______________________________

News Flash for gotroll22…the House and Senate Investigations into Trump/Russia Interference/Collusion were initially started and led by Republicans.

        LMFAO!!!!!

Idiot gotroll22 is again too stupid to know any better.

It was (R) John McCain that handed the Steele Dossier over to James Comey.

gotroll22 will have people believe that it was Hillary that was responsible for having Trump investigated, but that’s because Hillary lives rent free in gotroll22’s head…he’s obsessed with her.

        LOL!

The Free Beacon Was Fusion GPS’ ‘Republican Client’
        JOHN SEXTON

Posted at 8:41 pm on October 27, 2017

Since the Washington Post revealed Tuesday that the DNC and the Clinton campaign funded the Russia dossier there have been questions about who the prior funder of Fusion GPS’ oppo-research was. Here’s the relevant paragraph from the Post:

Elias and his law firm, Perkins Coie, retained the firm in April 2016 on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC. Prior to that agreement, Fusion GPS’s research into Trump was funded by a still unknown Republican client during the GOP primary.

Today, the Washington Free Beacon revealed it was the “Republican client” which paid Fusion GPS for oppo-research from 2015 to early 2016. The Beacon posted a statement about the arrangement on its site which reads in part:

“Since its launch in February of 2012, the Washington Free Beacon has retained third party firms to conduct research on many individuals and institutions of interest to us and our readers. In that capacity, during the 2016 election cycle we retained Fusion GPS to provide research on multiple candidates in the Republican presidential primary, just as we retained other firms to assist in our research into Hillary Clinton. All of the work that Fusion GPS provided to the Free Beacon was based on public sources, and none of the work product that the Free Beacon received appears in the Steele dossier. The Free Beacon had no knowledge of or connection to the Steele dossier, did not pay for the dossier, and never had contact with, knowledge of, or provided payment for any work performed by Christopher Steele. Nor did we have any knowledge of the relationship between Fusion GPS and the Democratic National Committee, Perkins Coie, and the Clinton campaign.”

The Washington Examiner posted a brief story explaining a bit more about the Beacon’s arrangement with Fusion GPS:

“The original arrangement between the Free Beacon and Fusion GPS involved opposition research into multiple Republican candidates, not just front-runner Donald Trump.”

Sources close to the Free Beacon stress that the project, when the Free Beacon funded it, had NOTHING TO DO WITH RUSSIA and DID NOT INVOLVE Christopher Steele, the former British spy who gathered anti-Trump dirt in Russia.

Steele was retained by Fusion GPS when the project was funded by Democrats, and NOT in its initial phase, when the Free Beacon was involved.

No money from the Beacon went to fund the dossier because Christopher Steele, the author of the dossier, wasn’t hired until after the DNC/Clinton campaign hired Fusion GPS.

That was months after the Beacon’s relationship with Fusion ended.

All of that was clear from the Post’s story this Tuesday but since then the shorthand has been to suggest that there was a Republican funder of the dossier.

CNN even ran a chyron today which read, “Who’s the anti-Trump Republican who helped fund the dossier?”

In any case, it seems the distraction about the Republican funder is over. The Free Beacon hired Fusion GPS to do oppo-research on Trump and other GOP primary candidates but the dossier we’ve been talking about for a year now was funded by the Clinton campaign and the DNC.

  2. Mel Hein Jr was one of the finest gentlemen Ive ever known. Good man, good coach, good father. One hell of an athlete. Had a brain hemorrhage 4 or 5 years ago and this might be related. Spent many days and nights with him hearing and telling stories. Spent some time with him in January at the national pole vault summit in Reno Nv. He looked and sounded great. We are going to miss him. Class act. His son Curtis was a walk on receiver at SC in the late 80’s early 90’s with me. Good man too. We will miss you coach.

    1. The real tuna fish sandwich is Pelosi, propped up by her 20 lbs. of botox jammed into her face. She smells like Fisherman’s Wharf which is now on the verge of going bust due to her chit hole town being deserted by tourist and locals. Poor Owns though, how difficult must it be to be a ucla supporter watch the athletic department go bust due to lack of interest. Talk about irrelevancy – that is ucla athletics to a T.

  8. I am not surprised at the bias leveled against democrats on this blog. But, I am surprised at the lack of good thinking that goes into the analysis. USC is by definition a conservative school. But, one thing has been emphasized consistently at USC during my 60 plus years as a participant is how to think and think about thinking and sound analysis. Those of you who attended this revered institution should not forget about the necessity for that . Labeling and bias on either side of the equation/D or P should think about that. It is unproductive. Leave the cult biases where they belong, in the cesspool . How about a little USC dignity.
