USC Morning Buzz: Who Makes Final Decision On Season?

During his interview with 710-AM on Tuesday, radio host Scott Kaplan asked Mike Bohn who makes the final decision on whether there will be a football season.

“Ultimately, the decision is made by our President,” Bohn said. “It’s not going to come down to individual institutions. It’s gonna be leagues.”

Bohn also said conference-only schedules are being built and would be completed by the end of month.

One other item: Bohn confirmed the Notre Dame game is off. Some hoped it might be spared because it is the final game of the season, not to mention the importance of the nation’s greatest intersectional rivalry.

It would be shame if the Notre Dame game is canceled simply to follow the rest of the Pac-12.

  1. No way would I ever want Clay Helton to face Alabama, or Notre Dame, because those would be guaranteed losses for USC , and I’m pretty sure Arizona State will whip our ass, too.

    3. no one is happier about not playing Bama and ND than Helton. I wonder if next year’s ND game will be played at USC? It seems unfair that USC loses a home game versus the Irish. Helton is always worth at least 3 losses to any team. Put him on the 2003 team….3 losses. He still controls the practices and his laziness will result in some losses this year that we don’t expect.

Bohn is using the Westwood High 1997-98 formula of hiring top flight assistants to overcome the head coaching deficiencies and given USC’s overwhelming returning talent the Trojans have a great chance at running the table in the woeful Pac 12 given that UW, Stanford and Oregon are breaking in new QBs. The timing is perfect for an undefeated regular season.

      2. Hate to break it to you since your parents obviously didn’t teach you this, but life isn’t fair. They’ve always played ND & FUCLA at home on alternating years. That’s not going to change. So pretty dumb to wonder about that.

  2. I love seeing USC Notre Dame but health is important too. I read the article about Notre Dame possibilities including joining one of the “Big” conferences for the fall. Things are changing.

    On a personal note I was just put through a Covid test because they yanked my gall bladder yesterday. I would not voluntarily do that to myself every, if the test they are using on the athletes is the swab test then I thank the athletes for their service

    1. I like Matt’s comment — but it needs to go further than football “needs to happen at some point.” Let’s be honest –covid is gonna be around in 2021, too. How long are we gonna take the position it’s too dangerous for a team to practice or play if 2 or 3 players are positive for covid (with no symptoms)?
      I’m still walking the beach with 2 buddies and swimming in our community pool (5 people limit). Is there some risk? Sure. That’s what life is all about. All we can do is minimize the risk as much as we reasonably can—not stop living.

    Any thoughts on legal challenges to Newsom or Garcetti’s shutdowns?

    I do not understand the closures of gyms, nails and hair salons. Where is the documented proof that can trace COVID-19 outbreaks to these places of business.

    At a minimum, there has to be a violation of the first amendment on freedom of religion related to closing places of worship.

    We need a lawsuit to filed pronto.

    1. I know this doesn’t answer your question —but here are some thoughts (for what little they’re worth). I have a good friend in Los Angeles who (for now) owns an art gallery. He’s under executive order to hold off on exhibitions, wine and cheese receptions and unrestricted gallery traffic. As a result he’s losing money. He contacted his insurance company to ask about the possibility of collecting on his business interruption insurance but they told him he could collect if he were closed due to multiple employee illnesses….but not due to executive order. In short, he’s screwed unless he sues the insurance company. A larger executive order legal issue arises from the fact states are losing tax revenue as a result of their OWN orders — & plan to make up the difference by raising property taxes on the homeowners who didn’t approve the executive orders in the first place. That’s a situation that begs for legal intervention.
      Finally, if past is prelude, the “vaccines” that will be mandated for government workers and members of the military will be attended by serious side effects in a fairly high percentage of cases. It will be interesting to see how the states respond to the argument that these vaccines are NOT provably “NECESSARY in the service of a compelling state interest” (that’s assuming state and city workers and armed services members have the same fundamental right to “bodily integrity” as abortion seekers).

Deceptively hyped as if being named to the watch list is some kind of recognition by the DW award committee proving how good a player is relative to his peers. Truth of the matter is that it’s more an administrative thing controlled by the very school the kid plays for. Need some positive press on a slow news day? University fills out the paperwork for a 99% guaranteed listing on the watchlist and hype away. Here’s the critieria:
    Each summer, all NCAA Division I-A colleges and universities may nominate running backs from their respective football teams who satisfy the following selection criteria:
    DOAK WALKER
    •Candidate plays predominantly at the running back position and has made extraordinary contributions to his team.
    •Candidate is enrolled in a degree program, is in good academic standing and is on schedule to graduate.
    •Candidate holds a record of good citizenship within and beyond the athletic sphere.
    •Candidate has demonstrated a record of leadership.
    •Candidate exhibits the characteristics of sportsmanship and fair play associated with Doak Walker.
