Thursday Reader Forum: What Explains Kedon Slovis’ Uneven Start?

It was really strange watching Kedon Slovis struggle and flutter some of his passes Saturday.

But I’ve heard Slovis was throwing passes like that during the previous month of practices. Is it possible there is some lingering effect from the injury Slovis suffered in the Holiday Bowl?

USC certainly hasn’t said anything about his health. But he definitely didn’t look the same on all his passes.

Frankly, one of the few interesting aspects of the Arizona game, in my opinion, is to see if Slovis continues to struggle on some of his passes. Maybe he was rusty. But if happened in practices too, who knows?

  3. With all of the sanitation being pushed around, maybe they are sanitizing the ball with wipes between plays and this makes the ball a little drunk with all that alcohol.
    Why just last week I read, with interest, an article about Ucla passing out sanitary devices about the size of an ordinary napkin to be used in between four plays to cut down on passing around germs. Each of the four main position groups is tasked with carrying these sanitary napkins for one week each month.
    So if the offensive backfield is on the sanitary napkin one week, surely the defensive backfield will be on the sanitary napkin the following week. Some of these napkin have “wings” to help adhere them to for a player’s special needs. I hear the group with the sanitary napkin may experience cramps and moodiness. Buy the Bruins plan to have all players fitted with sanitary napkins for each game. One cannot be too safe.

    1. But not buy ! (up there) and yes four play and fore play sound the same when read out loud that’s the point.
      Without an edit feature I sometimes overlook Scott’s typos because I read this three times before posting every word was as it should have been. Then something changed the word but to buy (say but to buy out loud and you’ll wind up with a pork roast)

  4. So….a few theories floating about regarding why Slovis was so “deplorable” on Saturday. Ya’ gotta admit, 40/55 for 381 ys and two TD’s (one TD was downright lucky) WAS depressing for the Trojan fan. Shoulda’ been 54/55 and 500+ yards against a Herm/Marv Lewis/Antonio Pierce run D. BTW, old
    Jack Jack actually showed some baller skills at CB for ASU. WTH?

    Kedon’s INT was ill-advised, throwing into 3/4 man coverage, though the INT was really a sweet pick by the ASU DB.

    I’m confident Harrell will continue to work with Slovis on how to deal with the 8 man drop. Switching topics, many on the site have moaned about the lack of commitment to the run. With 55 passing att and 40 run attempts, I’d say we mixed it up quite nicely.

    Wonder what International Consultant has to say?

    1. Even the “most holy of holies,” Nick Saban, admits that CFB defense is no longer “important.” Gotta put lotsa points on the board quickly. While I despise Chip Kelly football, without a rules change this is “modern” CFB.

    2. I’ve watched the replay of the Bru McCoy TD a couple times and it appears that Amon Ra went up one handed. Seems he might just have been trying to tip the ball towards the back of the end zone where his former MD teammate had settled in…
      I have to wonder if Ra didn’t tip it purposely, why wouldn’t the tallest player in the end zone have tried for the ball himself, especially considering he was there in time.

      2. Didn’t start out that way..but as the play developed, it became obvious that Slovis was throwing up a “Hail Mary”. Remember it was a free play due to offsides penalty vs asu. And I believe Bru just followed the QB’s 👀 eyes..

  5. He is throwing the ball like that because he has no confidence in his oline. He is compensating his throw by not stepping into the throw because he is afaid of getting hit like he has.

    1. Good point. I can see Harrell telling Slovis: “I can’t replace Drevno cuz the genius wants to keep him as his personal safety blanket at staff meetings ….so you’ll have to compensate by not setting up —-there won’t be time.”

      1. Yes —ball definitely didn’t help. But I’m wondering if Harrell hasn’t been working on trying to get the ball out a half second faster. A half second would reduce sacks (reducing chance of injury)….and result in lots of less pretty throws (big deal).

      2. Interesting premise, for sure. But you think it’s his release that was altered and not his reads? I just thought he might’ve hurt his hand some during the week and the cold wet weather bothered it some early in the morning. After it warmed up some and the sun came out it got better. Let’s hope it’s not a regular occurrence, eh!

    3. I was impressed by how long Slovis stayed in the pocket and/or held the ball.
      He rarely sought to roll out–though he seems pretty effective when out of the pocket. ASU managed a sack or two with only 4 DL rushing–the sign of a baller D-line. Herm coaches up a fine team. I’m impressed. Irrespective, Slovis held the ball for quite some time on many drop backs.

      2. Their defensive line ran a lot of twists, especially as the game wore on and we needed to pass more. For the life of me I can’t figure out why we can’t handle it..a simple question of communicating. But our guards were playing new positions, so we’ll see if they can correct this.

      2. You don’t see that every game. Or every year. One of the most memorable and exciting Trojan plays in recent memory.

        Obviously much less was on the line here, but it makes me think of Sam’s pass to Deonte against Penn State in the Rose Bowl.

        Similar length pass
        Tight coverage on both, but really tight on Drake
        Sam had better protection and more time than Kedon.

        Kedon’s pass was outstanding. You couldn’t ask more from a QB at the end of a game.

  9. Another kid who did a nice job was our true freshman kicker who attempted his FIRST EVER onside kick and hit it perfectly. At the end of the day, we were either real good at the end, or just F’n lucky..
