USC Fans Have Had It But When Will Mike Bohn?

USC fans are not suprised by the lackluster victories the past two weeks. And I’m seeing some parents of players are starting to become more vocal on social media.

But what does Mike Bohn think?

If someone cornered Bohn, he would whisper that he knows Clay Helton is not a great coach.

But . . . Bohn and his minions hired Todd Orlando, Donte Williams and the rest of the new coaching staff.

So far, those new coaches have produced a defense that looks remarkably similar to the Clancy Pendergast edition. At a higher cost, thanks to the salaries of the defensive staff.

Bohn also poured money into the new hype video dept. and added staff members because there had to be an alibi for Helton’s poor recruiting/performance.

The bottom line is Carol Folt and Bohn don’t want to buyout Helton and he is going to produce ugly wins over poor Pac-12 opponents.

So Bohn can point to Helton’s record but he knows he is defending an inferior product. Sooner or later, Folt will have to deal with it too.

What happens next year when all these juniors and seniors go pro? The team will be worse.

  1. Which Mike Bohn do we have? The guy who made some good AD decisions at Cincinnati, but who is now being micromanaged by Folt? If we have that Bohn, he should ask for his job back, and for the $$ to buy out Clay, otherwise tell Folt he will resign. Or maybe he has morphed into a guy who just doesn’t care.

    1. Which Mike Bohn do we have, 67? The one who said “I believe in Clay Helton!” The one who said, “I decry the social injustice that exists at USC.” The one who resigned Clay after he shamed himself in the Holiday Bowl.

      1. Should it be “re-signed”? [After the way we’ve been dumping on Cal75 for what happened today, I’m not sure we can rely on him for the correction]….

      2. Hard to understand what is going on with Bohn. He was successful at Cincinnati, he is a young guy, he had a bright future, he would have plenty of opportunities to move up to bigger schools and be a big-time AD.

But he goes to USC to lay down? Something is missing… did Folt and the BOT snooker him into thinking he would be able to do what he wanted, then they pulled the carpet out from under him after he arrived?

He knows the level of coach he has in Helton. When Bohn tweeted that he was not going to fire Helton, there were something like 5,000 twitter responses in the first 15 minutes, 9 to 1 negative from fans over the decision to keep Clay. Then Heritage turned off comments to prevent any more embarrassment. What gives with Bohn?

      3. We’ve all been there, 67. You get what looks like a peach assignment —and find out you’re actually just the designated fall guy.

      1. Please, no name calling. Except for Helton. You can say what you want. He’s the one who won’t change. That’s why, “When you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.” (actually dogs are much better and could coach better than Helton. My dogs learn.

      2. terrific — thank you…and I get it.
        Now, I have a confession to make: I wasn’t really fighting for Carol’s honor….

    1. Alternatively, if this means USC travels to Rice-Eccles a week later, we will be playing with snow on the ground. Not ideal for our Southern California lads.

BTW–‘Bama and LSU never play in the snow. Clemson doesn’t play snow games. Okie and Tejas?–no snow.

      1. Those last two Michigan losses to Indiana (Indiana!) and the Badgers were borderline Heltonesque. Wolverines were dominated dominated in those games. Buyout is something like $10 million if they wait until the the end of the season.

      2. He definitely has an edge. People say it is difficult to even be around him after a while. Perhaps that is why he is able to turn a team around, but then they give up on him.

      3. Yep. In the past, teams were so excited to have him come aboard they played hard for a couple of seasons before they got sick of him. Going forward, I doubt he even gets that first “grace” year…..

  2. Helton needs to go. If Bohner and Dolt need to get fire to make that happen, then fire them. These are not difficult decisions.

      1. Gov’nor Nuisance reminds of that scene from the movie version of Animal Farm (yes, I read the book in high school) where the pigs are rolling around the floor awash in food and decadence while the “less smart” animals were suffering outside.

  4. I still have trouble thinking we owe Helton a parting gift. I know contract language puts money into buyouts but why would he perform if he’s guaranteed money?
Just cut him lose and find a judge to agree with us that he failed to fulfill the contract. What’s the worst that could happen? Would other coaches be afraid to work for USC? Good! Maybe that’ll get results. The coaching decisions made by Helton a grossly inadequate for the brand USC claims to be.
Write a coaching contract based on reality instead of fantasy. I know Swann was being lazy writing a contract that favored Helton so heavily. Yes the school wanted stability but something went wrong that and they misspelled stability as stupidity.
Bohn needs to see this fraud for what he is, a platitudes spewing clueless clown. If Bohn fails, it’s cheaper to cut him lose than Helton.

  5. A lot was said earlier about Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon and Washington dropping off the schedule. But a bigger point has gone unnoticed. Dropping off Stanford & Cal has made Helton’s Path to the California State Championship much easier. LMAO

    1. But Lyle, Helton already has secured the Arizona state Championship. A win against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (instead of playing Utah) would solidify his claim

  6. If South Carolina can afford to fire their football coach
Will Muschamp and pay a buyout of over $ 13 million,
then USC can afford the buyout of Helton. The brand is
being hurt and there is fan apathy. Even Coastal Carolina
is ranked above USC ! In so many areas the football
program is in big trouble. Helton must be relieved of his
duties at season’s end in December. I would bring in a
proven winner in Urban Meyer to right the ship. He can
turn USC around and make the Trojans nationally
    relevant again.
