Fire Up The Crosstown Rivalry

I can’t say I ever felt like the USC-UCLA rivalry was too intense since Clay Helton took over.

But for numerous reasons, including COVID-19, this week is really low energy by Crosstown Rivalry.

So I will run a few photos from the past.

So let’s remember 1957, when USC sabotaged a UCLA card stunt in 1957 by sneaking an “SC” into it.

Also, in the 1950’s, UCLA reportedly had a card stunt that offered the middle finger to USC fans.

Here’s David Bell after his game-winning field goal in 2000.

And here’s the 1977 game, with Playboy All-American Walt Underwood (No. 95) and UCLA QB Rick Bashore (No. 11). USC wo, 29-27.

  1. It hard for me to get excited to watch any game led by Helton with the exception of the Sam Darnold last second win from behind game with Penn St 1/2/16. If he wasn’t for Sam Darnold like some many times, USC doesn’t win the game. Again, Helton has nothing to do with winning the game.

  2. We are stuck with Clay for the time being, but it is still the game vs. the gutties. The city championship – crosstown rivalry. Sam Dickerson in ’69, 50-0 in ’11, 66-19 in ’06, 22-21 in ’81 with Marcus Allen. Used to be considered one of the top 3 rivalries, along with Ohio St/Michigan, and OK/Nebraska back in the day.

  5. Great memories. I was at that 1977 game. Those football games were sooooo much fun. I wish we could have the same level of competition and elite football that we had back then. It brought the school together. It was so important to the identity of USC, and it still is. It is probably even more important now that the university is a behemoth. We all need something to rally around, a common identity that will serve to lead a diverse yet cohesive community. I look forward to the day when we have a head coach that will bring us back to Glory. USC is elite. Our players know it, and they play hard even under their albatross. They are the definition of Fight On! #BeattheBruins!

  9. The beat “rivalry “ game was 1967 and OJ’s two runs through the little gut tie defense. The game was for the national title, PAC 8 and Rose Bowl and city. Billy Hayoe blocked the field goal Zenon Andrushin a Russian immigrant that kicked for UCLA. McKay saw film that he kicked low and he put Hayhoe at 6’9” in the middle of the line and he blocked the PAT. I will never forget the energy in the Coliseum. Beyond compare. Hey Charlie and Owns, put the memory and tuck it high, tight and wide you know where.

Sadly in a day or so the important points of the post show up as new ideas from Scot (spelled wrong to avoid moderator interference) however you can see that the trojandude207 post is authentic.
