What a debacle. Did you see the end?

Drake London and Olaijah Griffin have to run over and taunt the UCLA sideline after the game ends, which is part of big scene on the field.

And then Clay Helton falls in the end zone trying to send London to the locker room.

Only Chip Kelly’s incompetence at the end prevented a USC loss.

    2. USC literally has more 4 and 5 star recruits on their roster than all other PAC 12 teams combined and they’re barely beating these weak PAC 12 teams and you have so called Trojan fans going out of their minds as if these cheap wins are some great accomplishment.

        All other 4 and 5 star recruits will suffer and have their talent severely hindered by this Trojan coaching staff.

If that spineless pile doesn’t spend the next 30 minutes chewing out those asshats in the locker room for that classless display after the game, he has no business coaching any sport on any level. I’m sorry there is no discipline or class left in this program. They should be embarrassed on so many levels. The Bruins just did everything possible to give them this game, they should just keep their mouths shut and be thankful. We all know this is facade of a team. Lots of talent, no discipline little technique, zero scheme. Now no class either.

      1. sorry Marv, swagger is confidence and it is on display prior to and during the contest. Not taunting and making a spectacle post game or acting like a dipshit post play for doing something you are supposed to do like make a tackle. They even do that shit during a poorly thrown incomplete pass by the opposition. With all do respect, don’t call that swagger. Especially since swagger is an over used under defined word. If you focus on doing your job then you are more apt to get your job done. When your job gets done and you take care of business, then that is the biggest statement and most intimidating. You act like they did you are acting like you are 0-10 and just beat a league champ. Act like you f-n been there before. I know I’m old school especially for my age but that’s how I developed in this rivalry and competed over my head, and also coached in this rivalry over my head and was successful. Both of these schools have discussed me many a time for their behavior. All in the name of rivalry. That bullshit is for the idiot fans. There contestants need to have some integrity and dignity. As do the coaches.

    The kids never gave up. O-line showed some glimpses of strength in the run game. Slovis, Hufanga, Jackson, Vaughans, London, ARSB, VM, all came through.

    Chip Kelly was done as a coach in 2012. Their 4th quarter was gutless. Can’t believe they kept leaving ARSB one-on-one.

    Why did Stepp spend the entire game – except for a key 3rd down carry – on the sidelines?

    The Pac-12 refs are awful.

    Let’s win the conference next weekend.

        Shit, Slovis got taken out by a mediocre Iowa team and that over-rated product from the polynesian pipeline got his bell rung and his ass kicked in by Arizona this year, that loudmouth didn’t even last a half. Hufanga got trucked by a no star Arizona RB and couldn’t see straight for a week.

  7. Just remember y’all, if you are ok with that crap then I don’t want to hear anyone bitch about it when it’s reversed. As someone who fought through is rivalry for 4 years as an athlete and 4 years as a coach (and chewed both teams a new one in ’06 because of a brawl that almost cost both schools post season) I can’t tolerate this sh!t. Have some dignity and as a coach, teach and guide these young adults.

    1. As a player and a coach you should know emotions run high in rivalry games. This is not out of the norm, there wasn’t a brawl and it want out of control. The most buttoned up programs in the country (apart from the academies) have this happen as well. I don’t like it either, but don’t Try and make it bigger than it was.

Seems like most of you all were pretty pissed off at Biggie against Cal 2 years ago when he ran his mouth and it cost them the game. Not much different. Your namesake has no control of his unit. In the big picture this shit is going to continue and the school and conference will keep sliding out of relevance.

But I think the bigger picture is that you want to be relevant again like the rest of us, as well as a product and kids you can be proud of. (sorry for assuming this but it seems right) So this product and this conference ain’t gunna get it done on any level. Starts at the top. Larry is a sociopath that has hoodwinked the clueless presidents. And keeps promising them big things that don’t come. But prez turnover allows him to not be figured out and called to the carpet. Presidents are all spineless. Most ADs (good ones have been poached by big 12 and sec and acc) are unqualified at running top notch departments especially under funded thanks to Larry. And this could be the worst group of power 5 coaches in the business. Clay being the least qualified and the most problematic in the bunch. If UCLA could cover a kick, It would have become apparent that game management was blown with no time outs left. The pac 12 and usc will not be relevant until these dominos start to fall. The longer they stand the further away from relevance they all will be. It takes time to rebuild and worse the mess the logger it takes…and its getting messier by the day

No leadership within athletic depts, among university presidents, or in the “commissioner’s office” – quote marks because Larry Scott is masquerading as a commissioner.

I’ll grant you all that (especially Clay’s penchant for burning time out on the theory he won’t need them in the last 2 minutes) —but grant me this: it sure was fun to see our kids not give up…and come back to win against a very well coached and motivated UCLA team. We (especially me) blame Clay for everything when things go wrong —so I guess he deserves SOME love when things go right.
        As for Larry Scott’s departure —the sooner the better.

      5. I just watched the highlights (and the champagne is wearing off)…kenwible is right. USC won in spite of Clay. They won cuz of super efforts from Vaughns, London and Saint Brown (and the d-backs who intercepted passes).

      6. Mike, Ill let you enjoy the spirit and fight. But give me this, would the fighting spirt have come that easy if UCLA didn’t bungle their way through the second half and forget how to get Felton in space or DTR on the parameter. The Kings of Non adjustments looked brilliant (with out making adjustments) just by walking onto the field, with ill advised 4th down attempts and fake punts and brain dead kick coverage and double offsides penalties inside the 10 on 3rd and long. That type of stuff brings fight a lot easier as you see the other side implode. I think the bruins were just as responsible for the usc fight as were the trojans. But that comes from 50 years of watching and being involved in this rivalry, as well as being involved in elite athletics on different levels. Its easy to see at the moment when momentum swings and who causes it. Its true they didn’t roll over. Buy the bruins and sun devils both had real simple paths to closing the door on victory and got too cute for themselves. Look at Colorado today burning the clock before the half. Take a knee. Don’t put your tail back in play to fumble with 20 seconds on your side of the field and give up 3 with seconds left. That was a momentum swing and moronic move. As inept as this staff is, sometimes they get bailed out by almost as inept pac 12 staffs

      8. This was a game of some remarkable individual plays by London, Vaughans, Slovis, Hufanga, Jackson. And I’ll throw in Stepp for his one carry in which he took tacklers with him to get the first down. Without those individual efforts, USC loses. Slovis now has three last minute comeback wins this season. How many great college QBs have done that in their collegiate career?

      2. Yes they do now if they could just learn how to make 1 on 1 tackles properly, especially in the backfield. They would be great! That’s what’s been so frustrating with the program since Heltons been the head coach.
        That and them acting like Jack asses after every tackle or mistake made by the other team.

  10. If USC wins Friday, and Notre Dame beats Clemson again, there will (likely) be 4 Undefeated Power 5 Champions, with the Big 12 Champion having 2 Losses. Wonder how the Committee would spin a 6-0 Ohio State getting in and a 6-0 USC not? This scenario is the path USC has to the CFP.

        Chip’s record is 10-20. Sumlin gets fired for 9-20. ucla has no buyout money left. Chipper is theirs for ’21, ’22, and ’23. Vic Bell stays home where it belongs.

  12. Surprised, and will take this win. Great game by Tyler Vaughns, St. Brown, Drake, and for a change the tight end. The catch by Tyler Vaughns leaping in the air, and stealing the ball from the Bruin defender was one of the great catches in USC history. The kickoff return by our freshman wide receiver was the key. Great effort.

    My goodness please recruit some linebackers in this upcoming class. We are too weak up the middle on defense, and really need some more speed and size at the middle linebacker, and outside linebacker/defensive end position. Time after time we came close to getting some sacks on the UCLA QB, and the lack of closing speed enabled UCLA to extend the play despite some pressure from the SC defense.

  13. You guys forget, you make your luck. Luck doesn’t just fall your way. Just think if this team were more disciplined, had more structure, really practiced so they could play for a full 60 minutes how awesome they would really be? They walked through the first half, were lazy and haughty. And the second half they turned it around. They made their luck. If they would just put their noses to the grindstone and work hard they wouldn’t be in this position every game. And, they might be able to compete on a national level. Just think if Urban Meyer had coached this group of young men. With their passion, fire, and talent, and his culture and identity, they would be lights out good. Here’s to dreaming of better days…..

      I don’t like taunting. It’s classless, but it is a part of modern sport. HC CH can’t fix it. He’s no authority figure. USC players and fans have always had class.

      Maybe that’s what we need to sell to pres Folt? Winning “the right way” does not include taunting. ?

  14. Poor play and coaching mistakes, coupled with incredible individual efforts, combined to make this rivalry game an exciting, unpredictable, edge-of-the-seat, thoroughly enjoyable experience. I’ve seen USC play UCLA more than 60 times, and I believe this game was one of the very best. (meaning most entertaining) in the series.

  15. I don’t want to spoil the party, but are we just setting ourselves up for a big disappointment when we play a real football team? I don’t know what team we will play, but I see the same debacle (as Scott would say) as last bowl season coming soon. We are still coached by Clay Helton. Ask yourself these questions; why is one of our best defensive players in the transfer portal? Why was there an illegal block in the back? Why were players posing after routinely doing their job? Why did it take 3 3/4 games to develop a running game? Why can’t the I line protect the quarterback better than they do?
    Contrary to popular belief, I don’t get paid by the word so this is enough for today.

    2. Why can’t they just tackle properly. One of the simplest fundamentals of playing TACKLE football. If USC could just do that right. It wouldn’t magnify their flaws so much. That’s their biggest problem this year besides the culture. Clueless Clay doesn’t have a clue as usual. Because this happens every fucin year. He still doesn’t practice tackling or sit a player down for making stupid mistakes. St Brown Vaughns and Figurora all stayed in the game still right after inexcusable screw ups.

      1. Every (any worth a damn) QB has the ability to change plays at the LOS when they see a matchup they think they can exploit. They do it all the time. This season is a debacle and should let everyone know how much he’s in over his head and just doing it for the money. He’s never cared about improving the Pac 12. As a matter of fact because of his leadership it gets worse every year. Including the officiating! The worse ever in all of football.

  21. Hey all you Trojan fans imagine ASUs coaching staff with USCs talent? What could of been a few years back if Haden and Swan were not such, clueless grifters, not hired or just fired Helton. USC would be back and competing for championships every year. Instead of Clemson earning their spot and replacing USC, as a top 5 football program.

      btw, watch Helton’s post game presser. It’s fascinating. He isn’t even pretending to be the Head Coach in the usual sense. He’s complimenting the players for not listening to him & doing their own thing. It’s a strange show of humility. I can’t help but feel for him. If he didn’t before, he sure realizes now that he needs to just let the players play…. he’s more of a den mother.

      1. Michael, based on the locker room videos, it seems that the team seems to be with Helton. Not in the way that a team would be with Meyer or Saban. They seem to be with Clay in a totally undisciplined, emotional over-the-top way. That is the way with Clay.

      2. Great, great point, 67. We can’t (or shouldn’t) discount the fact that this team never quits on Helton (well, a little bit in the Holiday Bowl maybe). But it means SOMETHING that the team likes Clay —even if he’s not the savviest coach out there.

      2. Me too. But it IS easier for announcers to say “USC isn’t handling UCLA’s defensive alignments” than it is for coaches to actually fix things on the fly (which Orlando largely did in the second half).

      3. Yes, Trojan D looked a lot better. And Chip gave them some gifts with a bunch of stupid play calls, including using 180 pound backs on 4th and one.

        BTW, there were two bizarre statements from the announcers.
        One was, before the game:

        “Chip Kelly is bringing the bruins back.” Say what? He is 10-20…

        The other was at the end of the game “If you are Trojan fan, you must be feeling good about USC’s decision to have kept Clay Helton.”

  23. After a week without internet (we moved, ugh) and then having my new internet connection installed just a few hours before gametime and then having the service pulled by Century Link (ergo, no Hulu) DURING WARMUPS last night…

    I will go back and review all of your incredibly prescient and cogent posts of the last week tonight when my wife permits. Expect a lot of likes and delayed comments from me.

    Gonna watch the replay of last nights game, cuz it looks like it was an instant classic. While my wife–who saw me going apoplectic–was screaming at the internet provider, I was following the game–egad–via the ESPN play-by-play feed.
    ….Drug addict looking for a fix.

    What little I can surmise from the play-by-play I followed on my phone, the Trojan O and D are ballers who make big plays when the moment demands. We all would rather have a Pete Carroll cakewalk by the end of the 3rd period–with Walkons getting game reps, yahoo! Not gonna happen with this administration.

    We have all been critical of the Strength and Conditioning program, but maybe last night our O&D front 7 were better conditioned than UCLA and we got the late running game going due to wearing down the Bruins (?). I’ll have to watch the replay tonight carefully before supporting this. In the “W vs ASU,” I think we wore down the Devils’ D at the end of the game They were gassed after we ran 100 plays. Same for UA I bet–though we didn’t run 100 plays.

    We have all been critical of the defense’s inability to “create” turnovers in the Helton era. I don’t have the numbers, but it seems that our D is ball-hawking a lot better with Orlando. That’s a good sign. Giving up 570 yards of “O” to the Chipper is repulsive, but he’s been whipping the Trojan’s D for half a decade. As mentioned by others, rebuilding the LB corps is mandatory.

    On numerous occasions I’ve stumped for Vavae, and it seems like last night was his night. Can’t wait to actually watch the game and see how he got the tough yards. I’ve stumped for him since he was a freshman. I see him as a 3rd/4th round steal of a draft pick. I bet that Stepps is still healing a bit. Give Vavae 20+ touches vs UW and we will win.

    I feel really sad for Carr. Toiling behind a horrible O-line all his years, and the injuries he suffered likely cost him a professional career. He works hard when given the ball, but just can’t get a break.

    I still take Darnold at 6’4 over Slovis at 6’2. Sam hasn’t had a QB coach since HS. If we can get Kedon to a solid 220 or so by August 2021, I’ll recant. Too bad we can’t get Kurt Warner to relocate to the big El Lay.

    …and yes it was a nice small batch Calumet Farms Bourbon last night. I’ll save the Blanton’s for Friday night vs the dogs.

  24. Watching USC football is like watching a kid with a Ferrari pull out a come from behind win against a Pinto because he was mangling the gears until he hit 4th gear.

    This team has amazing player talent, but poor coaching. The offensive scheme is a mess and requires players like Vaughns to flat-out beat opponents with skill.

    Being a USC fan is manic-depressive. Love the highs, but hate the downers. Well, got to celebrate some of the exceptional performances from the players yesterday!
