USC Morning Buzz: Winners And Losers Of The Week

WINNERS

Drake London

He dragged defenders down the field for a touchdown and was in the end zone playing defense on the final play of the game. And he caused Clay Helton to fall in the end zone. Points deducted for being a main culprit in taunting at end, however.

Tyler Vaughns

His 35-yard catch over a UCLA defender set up in the game-winning TD. He also caught a 38-yard TD in the third quarter to snap USC out of its doldrums. Not bad for being the “third receiver.”

Vavae Malepeai

He bounced back from that minus-2 yards rushing last week vs. Washington State and gained 129 yards with a TD against UCLA.

Chris Steele

He didn’t have any penalties. But was that more because the refs missed the grabbing?

Josh Falo

The tight end didn’t actually catch a pass but he was wide open on a play and the ball was poorly thrown. So that’s progress.

LOSERS

Todd Orlando

How long did it take him to get the defensive signals in or the defense lined up? He allowed 549 yards in total offense. His pass defense let DTR complete 30 of 36 passes. He let UCLA rush for 185 yards. But he will get portrayed as a defensive savior by the USC athletic dept.

Graham Harrell

I had NFL coaches texting me during the game that couldn’t believe USC wasn’t running the ball against the defensive scheme. USC had 30 yards in the first half. It wasn’t until the second half he started running, almost begrudingly.

Kenan Christon

Can’t say I expected him to get less opportunities this season than last season. But the great Harrell doesn’t like to run the ball and won’t budge off his iron-clad rotation of non-breakaway threats.

USC discipline

More than a few people don’t seem to understand that lack of discipline can cost you in a close game. Or against a good team. I don’t know what Talanoa Hufanga was doing staying tangled with a UCLA player but he wasn’t ready on the next play, which became a TD.

What happens if a taunting USC player gets into a fight after the game? Would they be held out of the Pac-12 title game? Remember two years ago when Iman Marshall taunted the Cal sideline and it allowed the Bears to win the game?

Chip Kelly

Was that a fake punt at the worst possible time? Were those the worst fourth-down hurry-up plays? No wonder UCLA is 5 for 15 on fourth down this season.

No one has talked about it but what was that 3rd and 2 play on the USC 24-yard line with a minute left? Did he want DTR to just get a good spot for the field goal? You’re playing USC and giving them 53 seconds to score? Go for a TD and run more time off the clock.

Can’t believe UCLA fans are accepting that coaching effort.

    2. Hopefully the Chipper apologized to each and every member of the Bruin squad, as he lost the game for the entire team. His 4th Qtr management was shambolic–esp a deep kickoff to which Gary B replied, “Thank you, sir. I’ll take it to the House (almost).” The fake punt was incomprehensible.

Chip is great at the run game, and his blocking schemes are fantastic.
He gets a lot of cheap TD’s with that hurry up shit. It was Oregon’s nom de plume. He’s no genius, though Pasche and McElroy were extolling him and saying that the NFL just hadn’t caught up to him.

The NFL is always ahead, Dave/Greg. Chip was exposed at the NFL level.
Nevertheless, the Bruins are an improved unit and will take away a lot of valuable recruits from us. Gotta up our game.

  1. Loser the PAC 12 who’s championship game is hanging in the air due to Covid in the Washington. Why were there no bubbles within the league?
I looked it up and found something very interesting. The PAC 12 pays Larry Scott more per month now, than he earned during his entire “professional tennis career.” Even adjusted for inflation he earns four times his winnings total (every month he sits on the throne)
The article says he won one title but doesn’t mention which title that was. My guess is charlatan.
His engineering of the PAC 12 football season has caused this chaos and he has already built an excuse blaming the individual players for the Covid disaster which has no team being considered for national playoffs.
If they make a movie of his life I expect it to end with him escaping to Kansas in a hot air balloon. I’d be willing to bet he’s already considering a move to the Biden cabinet. Secretary of urban what’s its looking good right now.

  2. We all know who the sorest loser of the week is, the blogger. He was like a kid in the candy store when we went down 28-10, but…
his dreams were shattered when we had a our inevitable comeback (full disclosure, I wasn’t feeling like it was inevitable at the time).

We all know that Clay isn’t the right man for the job, everything has been covered soup to nuts. But even still, with a terrible head coach and glaring weaknesses year after year, he is 4-1 against Scotties little gutties. Eat it! Fight on!

    1. Scott saw the 28-10 score flash at the bottom of the screen……and he saw 200 angry and/or disappointed hits. Scott had every right to take it personally when USC ‘stole’ more than half of those hits by giving the rest of us one of the funnest USC/UCLA games ever….

      1. Hufanga– 17 tackles and the key interception to set up SC going ahead for the first time in the game.

Slovis– 5 touchdown passes, and an improvisation on the winning td pass. One bad intercption that did not result in sucla points, and a second interception that St. Brown muffed.

        Sounds like winners.

      2. It seems clear to me that Hufanga and Slovis are in the win column. To add to John Wolcott’s stats, Hufanga also had two tackles for losses and a forced fumble. I agree he had some trouble with pass coverage, but he was voted NCAA defensive player of the week. If that isn’t a weekly win for Scottie, I don’t know what is.

Slovis pulled a rabbit out of his hat once again. This game was won because of a bunch of over-the-top individual efforts.

    2. Yes it’s COVID, but…..

Larry Scott is the king of Trojan “ambush.”

I don’t see where the SEC ever ambushes ANY OF ITS 14 teams.
It tries to advance all 14 schools.

LS secret hope is that all 12 Pac schools end the season 6-6.

  4. While Helton is pretending to be Rodney Dangerfield, He acts more like Dean Martin and Foster Brooks. He has almost literally stumbled into our current record via athleticism of the the kids who play for USC (not him).
He is wasting talent every game and leaves points on the bench. I think he actually believes his platitude speeches and, as I observed of Larry Scott, might find a position in Biden’s inner circle.

    1. While I agree with almost all of this, I disagree with the kids not playing for him. They all like him, with very few exceptions. Recruits go away and come back, guys who have graduated stick up for him. His players genuinely like him. He has major faults, we all know them by now, but his guys do play for him. Saturday was the prime example.

      1. I agree. This Helton situation is a whole new deal. USC has a coach who is not even close to top tier as a playcaller or strategist —but who is genuinely loved by his players. As long as he can attract top athletes this might continue to bring the program qualified success….. but no national championships….because the ideal situation is top athletes coached by a great coach…..

      3. @buddha – there are exceptions for sure, but I would expect more complaints than there are. Especially from former players, transfers, etc. but there just aren’t that many. But the barrage from us fans is overwhelming. I’m sick of the National media pretending that he is fantastic and pairing us as delusional. They don’t sit through every game season after season seeing the same uncorrected problems.

      1. Don’t know how you’d expect more wins in a divisional round robin tournament of 5-6 games..in a covid interrupted season. But maybe someone can explain it to me.
Some other conferences scheduled ooc games and more conference games.

      1. I just thought of something, Pudly. We’re being asked to play 3 games in 13 or 14 days. Where the fuck is Folt? Where the fuck is Bohn? Being president or athletic director requires more than congratulatory tweets. Step up Folt and/or Bohn: say something about this nutty situation….and say it on the record!

        Liked by 2 people

      2. Less than what? We play the games we’re scheduled to play. If we had a ten game schedule then we’d probably have an 8-2 or 9-1 record. Hardly less wins. And I’ll just say, domers on the road haven’t played well this season.

    1. Speak up now, Bohn. Get USC an extra day or two to prepare for a well rested, healthy Oregon team…..

      1. USC —IF it’s Athletic Director had ANY balls —would demand (1) it be named Champ based on record or (2) be given adequate time to prepare for Championship. It’s not just about getting healthy —it’s about having to get pumped up again so SOON after an emotional roller coaster on Saturday.
If Bohn can’t see this he’s weaker than Haden.
