There Is A Smokescreen To Hide Obvious Flaw

Mike Bohn getting ratioed on twitter is nothing new.

But USC now seems to spend more time trumpeting recruits than being a great football program. Especially when recruiting is being used to mask the obvious shortcoming (Clay Helton).

I believe recruiting is the life blood of any program but how much are players improving? Did Drake Jackson get better this year? Did Kedon Slovis?

Meanwhile, the replies to Bohn’s tweet are overwhelmingly negative, of course.

  1. Last fall, when Bohn tweeted he was retaining Clay, the responses were 10 to 1 negative. Over 1,000 responses came in, and his twitter account stopped accepting replies after about 20 minutes.

    When Foreman revealed USC yesterday on TV, and the announcer then asked him “What was special about your selection of the USC program?”, Korey ducked the question. Seems to be all about remaining close to his family.

      4. Same sarcastic humor and it’s nice to know that 67 & Michael are still atop on this blog. I’m right again 1) JT Daniels having a better season than Slovis. 2) Slovis in year 2 would decline. My January and February mortgage paid for Thank You Oregon. I’m grateful for Matt Campbell & Iowa State for beating Oregon to pay my Amazon bill for Christmas. How this team lost to Oregon at home, reminded me of how a 41 point favorite lost to Stanford. I’m Back!!!! (3 times I’ve been furloughed at work totaling 4 1/2 months lost) I am truly grateful for this wonderful season of college football 16-2.

        What I have been doing is crying in between posting my responses that show there is absolutely nothing this con man could say or do that will get me to say a single negative word about him.
        I constantly have to deflect but I’m getting tired…

    3. Bohn is living in a fantasy world. He wants to believe USC is close. Like one game or season from being great and we are very much still respected. He’s gonna become a Dan Guerrero that does just enough with the sports program to keep his job.
      We only got Foreman because he wasn’t able to take his official visits to schools that he wanted to visit. We’ll take it but Helton and Bohn need to wake up and realize this wasn’t from winning and success.

      1. I’m a bit more optimistic, SamBam.

        The USC defensive front 7 looked better this year. Perhaps So’oto and Orlando and Claiborne can build a truly smashmouth (if somewhat gambling) front 7. Maybe Mr. Foreman saw some promise in our D front development. Maybe Drake helped recruit him?

        Additionally, the back 4 showed improvement under Williams and Naivar (sp). With the exception of a gamer UCLA Chipper Offense, the D had 3 very good games to end the year.

        Perhaps Mr. Foreman didn’t want to play CFB in the Southern US.
        The only other defense is played in the B1G (aka Big 10+4), and I really would not want to live in that part of the country if I could afford not to.

        The presumed 2021 USC-Ore meeting should be fun to watch.
        It’s OK to be optimistic for USC FB in 2021.
        Spring Ball is right around the corner.

    1. The Ducks got shellacked. 4 turnovers. Only 17 minutes time of possession. Whoever heard of that?

      They didn’t have their starting QB, but still, 17 minutes times of possession is a first to me, in over 50 years of watching football.

      Ducks weren’t particularly good this year, but we made them winners with turnovers.

      I hate to think what would have happened had USC played Iowa State. Can’t believe I am saying that…

      1. Let’s see, Helton’s SC teams lost to Wisconsin, Iowa & Ohio State. Pretty sure they would’ve lost to Iowa State. The only win was a miraculous game by Darnold and a poor last minute by Franklin/McSorley brainfart in play calling and execution.
        Clay will NOT be confused with Big Game Bob.

      2. My recollection, Evil113, M.D., was that Penn State scored 7 straight TD’s on 7 straight drives in that Rose Bowl. I was appalled at the USC (lack of) defense.

      Had “the brain trust” (HC CH/Harrell/Slovis) not gifted Ore with three short fields for TD’s in the first half…..

      Mario has some serious issues with his offense, and I’m not sure Morehead has the answers. An interesting sidebar will be if Super Mario makes some changes to his offense.

      Not having CJ Verdell did hurt the Dux significantly, but Tyler Shough may not be the QB of “the future.”

      Man, I’m optimistic for 2021 and can’t wait for Spring FB.
      A 10-2 regular season is acceptable for me.
      Anything less…..?

  4. The Oregon loss should put in perspective to the last person lying to themselves: USC is awful and the PAC 12 is Sunbelt Conference caliber at this point. The talent is obviously better but much of that has been fleeing, and the style and softness, and the general fiasco of the P12 management is degrading the product.

    SC sets the pace in this conference and always will, and our soft football has had an effect downstream.

    As for the recruits, it used to be that any recruit out West we wanted came to USC, and it was shocking for it to be otherwise. SC could also largely have the pick of who we wanted in the nation.

    That said, SC still is SC, and part of that is some sausage making of boosters and agents, etc. who help as they do all the top programs. and of course USC’s natural advantages of TV, the magic dust of being an NFL factory, the NC and Heismans and the other trophies, the glitzy facilities in the global Center of Glamor among the palm trees that is LA, and the fact that California is always 1st or 2nd in producing NFL players (it’s dropped off considerably in the last decade as the P12 has but is still there).

    The talent isn’t divided up like it is with FL and TX with tons of D-1 schools in state and neighboring states (not to mention what was until recently, USC’s lock on the best Polynesian players).

    When SC brings in the top 5-10 class instead of the #1-2 class it’s a problem. SC had virtually a two decade lock on highest “star” rating even when its classes were too small to be #1. (Many fans speculated that there was too much talent and not enough “grinders” to but I’ve always thought it’s the coaching that makes the competitive culture.)

      Larry “tennis is my middle name” Scott enjoys setting up all the PAC 12 schools with those “ambush” games. The 8PM west coast Saturday kickoff time means that the visitors who must travel home lose 1.5 days of prep for the coming week.

      I think the knucklehead has given up on the Thursday night game, though he still schedules the Friday night game. They guy really doesn’t have the faintest clue about the effects of FB on the body and psyche of a teenager student-athlete.

      Under most circumstances, the winner of the Pac 12 N and S will have played their rivalry game late on Saturday night, traveled home exhausted and sleep deprived; have a shitty Sunday shake down and film session; and then start prep for A FRIDAY NIGHT PAC12 Conf champ GAME 5 days later. Fine for a professional. Not fine for a teenager.

      My only final hope for Pac 12 FB–and I do root for 11 of the teams–is that Merton Hanks locks “Ambush game” Scott out of the office until the Champ game is finished.

  5. Just watched the Rams win with an unknown backup quarterback and realized if Helton had been coaching they would’ve tanked. Instead they played as if there wasn’t much drop off.
    Why can’t Bohn see that real coaches plan for this type of situation.
    USC used to put second and third string players in during every fourth quarter every game. People thought it was mercy, but it was really getting ready for replacement duty. These days our replacements look lost. Our second string is so weak USC took a million dollar loss skipping a game. Bohn should have kicked chicken little to the curb.
