USC Morning Buzz: Criticism Coming From Embarrassing Source

I can’t say I remember parents of USC players being more critical of Clay Helton or the other coaches on social media than in the past few months. And it comes after a 5-1 season.

I don’t try to track it like some do because I don’t really follow the parents. But several comments have come across social media, never by the same parent, and impossible to ignore.

It’s a lot more noticeable than when USC was 5-8 in 2018 or 8-5 in 2019.

When Michael Pittman’s father criticized the coaches on twitter in 2017, it was a big deal. But there’s been multiple comments in the past few months where a parent will say something about the coaching and people just agree and it doesn’t create a shockwave.

Probably because everyone just knows how the coaching is and accepts it. The fans and parents are stuck in the same boat with that iron-clad contact Helton has. Also in the boat: Mike Bohn and Carol Folt, of course.

I haven’t singled out a tweet because I don’t want to get a parent in trouble.

  • Former USC offensive lineman Chad Wheeler was arrested Monday night on suspicion of felony domestic violence and accused of assaulting his girlfriend in Kent, Wash. Bail was set at $400,000.

Per The Seattle Times: “A Kent Police Department report said police responded to a call of a woman who was locked in a bathroom following a “physical fight” with her boyfriend.

“The victim had called 911 to state that she was being “killed.” Police were advised that she had suffered a dislocated arm and was bleeding.”

  1. I guess Seattle Chad was tired of getting planted (seriously, knocked to all fours) by tough d-lineman play after play….. “Please don’t cut me, Pete. Watch this! I can beat up my girlfriend with one hand tied behind my back!”
    Somebody needs (1) supervised probation with mandatory anger management classes and (2) a first rate Austrian mentalist to help him unlearn everything he was taught at USC.

      “Everybody makes errors in judgment and makes mistakes,” the head coach said. “Hopefully, you rectify and you learn and you grow and you go ahead, and I know that’s what he’s done.

      “I know the guy, and I know exactly what he’s done. I feel very sorry for anybody who is mistreated and not dealt with properly and hopefully we can always learn and grow and make sure that we do the right thing to take care of people and animals as well.”

      Unfortunately, “Wheelie” is no longer being coddled by Clown U FB and necessary for next week’s game. Lock the AH up!

      Too bad “Wheelie” isn’t the mature, SUCC hero type that rescues his nephew from drowning.

  2. SC was out-coached in the PAC-12 championship game, especially in the first half. SC called pass plays where the receiver has to come back toward the ball to catch it (so the QB is throwing to a spot not to a receiver). Oregon just blocked out the receivers from coming back on the ball and the safety was prepared to intercept it — which is what happened twice. This system results in too many injuries and the defense is on field too long. SC needs to use a speed back to make run blocking easier (like Adoree Jackson did).

      As long as we’re talking parents —-why aren’t Kenan Christon’s parents complaining? He’s the type guy Wayne is referencing….fast, tough, good hands….and Clay won’t play him.

      1. It may not solely be that SC has an Air Raid passing game but that its running game is not matched to its OL elephantine pass block schemes resulting in greater imbalance. I believe Kenan Christon is the key to correcting this. So was Marquise Stepp who ran a 4.4 forty. But those two runners took a back seat to others who are not slow but not super speedy and quick enough to turn corners and burst through holes into the open on slower linebackers. SC needs a run strategist not necessarily an OL coach. Don’t expect Helton to recognize this and Harrell is too inflexible to change. But winning has a way of changing coaching. Christon is also a team guy with a great attitude and toughness.

      3. Kenan not a complainer. He runs the equivalent to a 4.3 forty, the same as DeAnthony Thomas who was a game changer at Oregon (stolen at last moment from Los Angeles due to NCAA sanctions). And Christon was relegated to sitting on the bench in 2020. The RB coach (Jinks) says he is going to use 1 or 2 back scheme next year. I would make Christon the key back from which all running schemes are geared around. Then watch what happens with a re-energized OL.

      4. Kenan’s Dad is right. [I honestly think Clay figures “with our o-line, a smaller back like Kenan won’t get past scrimmage” —but that’s where Wayne’s idea comes into play —- just give Christon a brief opening — a tiny window of a hole —and his speed will do the rest —or hit him with a 6 yard throw just past the scrimmage line. He’ll get it done. He’s done it before…on some 50 yard plus runs].

        We used to pitch/lateral the ball on a sweep to get the runner outside the defense too. So many options

The coaches should go look at the video of DeAnthony Thomas when he was at Oregon.  What schemes did Oregon use to capitalize on his speed and shiftiness?  I have been watching some of those videos and I am not even an X and O football guy.   Do the OL have to only brush block with a speedy back? If I remember correctly Chuma Edoga loved Adoree because he made his job easier and, more importantly, more effective.  SC couldn’t execute the long pass game much in 2020 nor the long run play.   So SC wasn’t utilizing the whole field even with the untacklable Drake London. Kenan Christon, Gary Bryant, Isaac Taylor Stuart – need to be on the field and utilized in strategic ways to bring about a more balanced, unpredictable offense and special teams play.

      7. Unlike some here I think Harrell has done wonders for the offense —but there is so much more we could do if he just understood (or paid more attention to) the run potential this team has. He’s got more weapons and more ways of using them than he seems to be aware of.

      9. Remember the wheel route (Leinart to Bush) that saved USC in the Virginia Tech game? Stanford did it to us with McCaffrey. Smart use of your tailback is worth 7 points a game….

  3. All those complaints and yet the transfer portal rush hasn’t materialized. Even with the liberal allowances for immediate eligibility. Wow! This is front page stuff. Helicopter parents not satisfied with playing time criticizing coaches and yet we get a top recruiting class.

      1. Every team has transfers of kids who get passed on the depth chart…ruins get transfers during and at the end of the season due to being embarrassed and mistreated by the coach who’s more interested in donuts than winning…

  6. Let’s be honest. Wheeler had no buisness being on the team after the security and cops had guns drawn at him and he couldn’t handle his “vitamins” or mushrooms or whatever I can’t remember anymore we’re so fucked up.

  8. The poor coaching is creating a program that is an embarrassment,- a school that looks like it just can’t get it’s sht together about anything, ran by corrupt little cliques. Folt is clueless, she embarrasses her employers. That’s why they fired her at UNC. Why ever did SC BoT think that such a person should come to helm the university at this point in time or ever??? The blows don’t stop coming for SC. It’s just a continuation of the Nikias era.
