The Super Bowl Illustrated A Key USC Talking Point

It does say something when Ronald Jones is the only USC player on both Super Bowl rosters.

When you have just many players from Canadian schools on Tampa Bay’s roster as USC, that’s a problem. When you have four players on the Bucs’ roster from Division II or III schools and one from USC, it means something.

Coaching matters. It impacts player development. USC has not been developing players. I keep pointing out Kedon Slovis and Drake Jackson did not develop last season so this is something even happening in the Coach Bohn era.

USC is resting on its laurels when it says Trojan players have won the most Super Bowl rings. The tradition is withering.

  • USC debuted at No. 20 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, its first appearance since 2017.
  • Former USC assistant coach Deland McCullough, an assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs, is going to become associate head coach/running backs at Indiana, according to Football Scoop.
  • Trey Johnson, USC director of scouting and recruiting strategy, has left for Tennessee. Remember, new Vols coach Josh Heupel already hired away USC’s new on-campus recruiting director.

  1. When I heard Chris Brown say, “I’m part of Helton’s Horses, there are about 30 of us former players in there,” I knew there was a false perception of where USC stands.

  2. Agree that the Super Bowl demonstrated how important coaching is to success. TO is probably as good as most DCs, but Helton and Harrell are not close to being top notch in their positions.

    Harrell hired the new Clay for the offensive line coach because they couldnt lure a single talented o-line coach to USC.

I suspect that they could have hired other O-line coaches (assuming the $$ are right), but Clay #2 has tons of experience coaching the o-line in a spread offense (e.g. with Mike Leach at Wazzu). Not saying he is a good or not-so-good hire, but I am thinking that is why they hired him, as his experience is what Harrell was looking for.

      4. Honestly Mike, almost anyone who is at least “an average” oline coach should be able to pass block with USC’S talent but more so because this pass offense doesn’t ask for the tackles to keep a block very long so they really shouldn’t allow a defense in the backfield.
        When you look at the schedule and quality of Western Kentucky’s opponents it doesn’t make you feel too high thinking they were #1 pass blocking team. They played Louisville (21-35) and BYU (10-41) losing both convincingly and the other schools were Georgia State, The Citadel, etc.
        Now running the ball and being ranked #1 in run blocking……..Little different.

      1. Sam, what he did up in stanfurd vs their guy DaSilva(sp) was outstanding. Shut him down. And DaSilva was pretty much the Pac12 POY to that point.

      2. He sure did. That dude had Earl Watson saying he was the best player and that he’s gonna be a 15 year starter in the league. Big words. But Mobley is just a disciplined kid that won’t let anyone get to him or under his skin.
        He won National Player of the Week by the NCAA today.

  6. So Wolf thinks that a player in Canada or a D2 school gets better coaching? What a joke. He may or may not get better coaching but it won’t determine if he makes it in the league. A lot of things have to happen for a player to make it in the league. NFL players have a short shelf life and timing is everything: Football is a brutal sports so players need to try and peak at the right time. Here are two examples ( one from a long time ago for us mature readers).
    Jordan Simmons could barely sniff the field at USC. He had been hurt a lot of the time and was never ready physically for the daily grind of college football. Jordan has been a part-time starter in Seattle for the past 3 seasons playing a lot more than he was projected to. In the pros, players don’t play full speed during the week – much less during the season. The sport is just too brutal.
    Example 2, Brian Bosworth. Bosworth is perhaps the best ILB to play college football in the last 40 years. He won the Butkus ( maybe twice) and was 1 man wrecking crew while at Oklahoma. So what happened to The Boz in the pros? His shoulders were so jacked up from playing that he never recovered physically and thus was never the same player. This happens to many Star college players with some exceptions. These guys peak too early and burn themselves out before they turn pro.
    Of course Wolf would tell you that The Boz’s coaching was sub par in the pros and that is why he had a ho- hum career. Please.

    1. The Boz is now in real estate sales in So Cal. He was the listing broker on a house I was interested in about 8 years ago. Introduced himself as Brian. I kept thinking “I know this guy…from somewhere…but where?”

      Afterwards, the broker representing me says “Yep, that is Brian Bosworth. Looks, different, doesn’t he?”

      He must have lost 50 pounds or more. He was a normal-sized guy, in good shape, but nothing out of the ordinary. Glad he was able to turn stuff around.

    4. They don’t have any pressure at those schools except that it’s usually there “last shot” at playing ball. They usually are transfers from big schools like SC and are there for poor grades or off the field trouble and can’t afford to slip in performance knowing they have to shine in a small low key football environment. Not the same as a #1 QB having all the spotlight on him trying to fill Matt Leinart shoes as a true freshman.

      Wolf forgets those specifics.

      1. I lived in the upper midwest for a couple of years. Consider the average So Cal day – low humidity, low wind speed, comfortable high temp, no rain….we get about 300 days a year of that. Upper midwest gets about 70 at most. The entire year.

  8. Yep, a mid-late October day, with really low humidity, starts out chilly, you know it will get to 75 by 1 pm, with brilliant blue sky, no clouds, and there is the smell of the sycamores and the other deciduous trees turning…

        This last year bozo FB lucks into a 5-0 record and has a chance to maybe get a decent bowl bid. All they have to do is win the Pac-12 Championship at the crumbling mausoleum against a mediocre 3-2 Oregon team.

        But choka, choka, choka, choka, choka choke, SUCC blows the game and its QB gets knocked out on the last play of the game. Then, all of a sudden, bozo u, the any team, anywhere, anytime FB team, declares it will decline bowl bids. LFOL

      2. No bullshit — that’s a beautiful sentiment. I hate it when folks go ultra-personal. If I want that, I would spend more time with my in-laws.
        That said, unlike some of the “off their rockers” folks who come aboard from time to time, Owns has something to add that you and I always recognize. Hope he knows our kidding about the UCLA program is in the spirit of fun…… and that we’re really wondrous people, full of love and good wishes for humanity (okay, that sentence kind of got away from me at the end)…..
