USC Morning Buzz: Time For An Announcement

OK, time for an announcement. I am supplementing the Inside USC blog coverage with a USC newsletter.

The newsletter is for the more hard-core readers who want to know stuff that is going on behind-the-scenes and less general in tone/purpose.

Instead of explaining it, I would rather you read the first entry, which concerns coaching friction. Just click here.

Meanwhile, here is a rendering from 1957 of what Heritage Hall was supposed to look like. Didn’t quite turn out this way:

  1. I don’t know if I’m hardcore but I took a look. After reading it I thought, “Why do they keep Helton around?”
Heritage hall could have looked like the May Company in the Eastland shopping center (West Covina)? I’ll bet McKay would have hated it.

    1. I’m grateful for your post- I am hoping this year will end the LONG drought of not winning a PAC -12 title. I go back to 1972-for basketball/ football & with the way Ethan/ Eddy are playing & Evan in the middle- there is a good chance to do serious damage in the NCAA tournament. I’m hoping that USC doesn’t “ lay an egg” with 2 winnable games on the road- Taking care of business with the Washington schools can start the “ blueprint “ for a #2 seed in the West.

      1. This team plays defense, has so far anyway, like nobody’s business. They held byu to 52 pts and are the only team to hold the cougs under 60…as a matter of fact, #1 gonzaga managed to hold them to an avg of 70 pts in 2 games.
Defense travels well, I’m with ya, let’s sweep the pnw!

    2. The thought of Henry Bibby, Sam Clancy, Brian Scalabrine, David Blumenthal, Jeff Trepagnier, and Brandon Granville losing in the 1st Round to NC Wilmington never goes away and haunts me to this day. What a way to erase the greatness that team was and could have been. I hope they get some history lesson before March Madness to let them know what can happen so they come out swinging to do some damage.

      1. Definitely. It’s the reason why that next year is such a heartbreak because we (SC) remember that team but that following year would have cemented that team as one of the great groups when they talk about basketball played in the pac 12. At least they would be praised as one of the Trojans which still is but they usually speak on the teams that not many remember like the ones who had to play Wooden or they mention the team that had Harold Miner and was upset. Clancy all around Defensively and Offensively might be one of the best ever on both sides and he was unselfish getting the ball to the open man. I never want to pick on any player especially a great one like Granville buy as effective he was being our true pg he was a liability to the more athletic guards at the time who had a big size advantage while facing some good ball handlers with great scoring capabilities. He had a lot of tough assignments and held his own and then some but if we put some of the the other players like even JMac who was small but had some leaping abilities to play a higher level that team beats Duke in the elite 8 and gets to the final 4. Duke only won that ball game because Jayson Williams was able to have his way with Granville and every time they needed a spark he went right down the floor to stop any bleeding with Granville not being able to do anything. He had heart. He did everything you wanted as a point guard. But his size hurt USC because he couldn’t get to the rim down the stretch in games and again had size disadvantage most often. Love what he did for USC and have nothing but respect for him. I’m just being honest. But yeah that team would have put USC on the map long ago if it weren’t for that 1st round loss to NC Wilmington. I was in a horrific mood at work the next day hearing a flip flop Bruin Basketball fan all day. Ha.

      1. Interesting info in the piece above is that the teachers – many of whom want to go back – are uncomfortable expressing their opinions to the union.

      3. Unions don’t exist for union members. First thing I learned as a city attorney. [When I became President of the City Attorney’s Association I organized the lawyers, we threw the union out and began negotiating our own contracts].

      4. Alameda. What a surprise. Really hard to believe such a woke county is declaring war on parents and their kids. There must be some mistake. This looks like Russian disinformation….

  3. Helton has been effectively neutered at SC. He is head coach in title only. TO and GH each run their own side of the ball. TO deserves all the credit for the turnaround in recruiting since he hired the right staff on his side of the ball. GH is being given enough leash to either prove himself, or hang himself. Let’s hope we play Notre Dame early in the season so we can get an early test of whether this team can compete at a high level. A blow-out loss to ND and another loss or two might be enough to finally take the action every fan has craved.

I really question whether TO thinks the air raid is a smart offensive idea. My guess is that he knows it is a stupid idea and hates practicing against it, because it doesnt really test his defense. USC goes into games with his unit unprepared for a real offense and TO is forced to make adjustments as quickly as possible. It is on-field training for the players.

It just seems that this coaching staff is going to implode at some point. TO cant enjoy working with either Helton or Harrell. But it is still in TO’s best interest to prove himself at USC. My guess is that he will aggressively push the young players onto the field and will be OK if there are mistakes early in the season as long as he can show progression later in the year. TO as interim HC is a real possibility.

Despite all these issues, it seems to me that Bohn is slowly getting this ship on the right track. Some really good staffing decisions on the defensive side of the ball. Good S&C coaching hire. Great special teams coordinator. And GH has hired his own staff and now he has no excuses for lack of performance. Several Pac-12 teams are getting better, but the conference is still weak, so Bohn should set the bar that USC must either dominate the Pac-12 this year, or make real coaching changes. Too bad we dont play either Oregon or Washington in the regular season.

    1. Now that he’s had a look at every Pac 12 offense he’s gonna face I expect T. O. to have our D playing lights out —-regardless of what they see in practice.

      1. Michael,

I belong to the Engineer’s Arcehtect Association Union since i work for the City of L.A. They have no pull. The only one that does is IBEW. With them they get a 5.5% more pay plus .02 more towards retirement. You know how the City unions work

    2. Simple to handl Harrell’s offense. Have the de’s and outside lber’s blitz. the o line will not be able to pick up 6 to 7 players coming in unless Harrell keeps a rb and te in to block. Slovis is good but he will get rattled with all the bilitzing

  4. I believe MB has already given CCH notice that this is his last year. Only reason he wasn’t out after last year is the moronic/inconceivable(does this word mean what I think it means?) contract $. Nice extension, Lynn.

    1. Wouldn’t it be more fun, then, if Bohn made Helton wear short pants and a beanie with a propeller on top during games…?

      1. Michael,

I have supported, respected, and like you. But your thought has just destroyed all that. How dare you insult Bennie and Cecil with the mention of Helton in the same breath. Those are fightin’ words. LOLOLOLO. I had Beenie’s propeller hat as a kid. Cool hat. Just having fun with you.

      2. Oh, crap! I loved Beany as a kid. The all time great episode was where there were two identical, warring Cecils —and Beany had to choose between them —he picked the right one by touching them both and siding with the one who had a warm heart……
