Second half is starting. More USC fans than vs. Kansas. The administration kept the lower level seats.
USC shooting 59 percent. Oregon shooting 30 percent.
USC up 28-19 with 5:57 left.
First off, USC and Oregon fans are cheering on UCLA while watching the video board at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
You’d cheer too if half a million was coming your way with a win.

Michael,
It is never good for ugly. However, beating an SEC team that was in second postion and the Pac 12 getting three teams in the eilite 8 is good. I want ugly to beat michigan and SC beat Gonzaga. SC and ugly would meet in the semi final four game and have SC put a beat down on ugly. Then the play Oregon St. in the finals.

USC looks so good. All the Pac-12 teams look good. This is very good for the Pac-12. With some new leadership, the future is looking up for the Pac-12.
It is all about getting better coaches in the league. Mick Cronin will make UCLA good every year. The only question is whether Andy Enfield is a good coach, or just has a lucky year with the Mobley twins.

Michael, despite a really awful period in the second half in which they lost their aggressiveness and turned the ball over a bunch, and a D that was not nearly as good as against Kansas and Drake, they still won by 14. They need to figure out how to replicate the Kansas game. I hope that they learn from tonight the importance of continuing to attack being disciplined inside on D. If they do, then they can compete against ‘Zag.

You just knw they weren’t going to play PERFECTLY tonight — it’s hard to put 2 great performances together —so easy to lose concentration when you’re kicking ass — BUT they beat the spread by a bunch again….and this was a good game to play to get the Kansas euphoria outta our system…..

the awakening of the back court ,and continued strong presence of the front court, makes SC a potent team…they are in a tournament with the best as should be obvious with all the upsets…Pac 12 comprises 40% of elite 8…none of remaining 3 has choked under this pressure, any in the elite 8 can win this.

Slow down Chris Duarte, and the other big guard was the key. We held them down, but they still had a decent night but not enough.
Tremendous win. now the biggest game in program history. Can the Trojans knock off the No.1 team in the country, and give them their first lost. Gonzaga is a well coached team but not intimidating so anything can happen. They have cracked in past year maybe we catch them on an off night.
Issiah White was again the glue tonight. Boy, did he come up big in the 1st half.

I hope SC wins the national championship in basketball…..not that I’m a big SC basketball fan….I’m not. But if SC wins the NC, that will effect the football program. If Clay Helton thinks he is on the hot seat now, he will think that he is sitting in a volcano if SC wins the NC in basketball. You have 50-100 times as many SC football fans as SC basketball fans. They are all going to be screaming….”hey, what’s going on here…..SC wins the national championship in basketball and they can’t win the pac-12 in football”? There’s going to be a lot of angry SC football fans(a whole lot) and that’s what we need if we are ever going to get this football program back to the glory days. There are a whole lot of fans like me who love USC football and couldn’t care less about USC basketball. So I’m pulling for USC basketball.

True. I never thought of that. But the big test comes Tuesday. If( and this is a big “if”) SC can beat Gonzaga, they are definitely in the drivers seat. Like I said. I’m really not a big SC basketball fan. I just see this as something that can light a raging fire under the butts of the USC football fans. Until that happens, the Board of Bustees will just continue to ignore the Fans mild complaints. I just think that there is a lot more football talent west of the mississippi than there is basketball talent. Football players are also a lot more enticed by the weather in SoCal than basketball players since basketball is played indoors. I really don’t think SC should have a better basketball team than a football team.

I think the Gonzaga game is going to be closer than people think, but it is very difficult to see USC winning that game. I would love to see both UCLA and Oregon State get into the final four. The Pac-12 is finally getting some credit here.
What this proves, beyond a doubt, is that good coaches win. Oregon State and UCLA have good coaching. The real question is whether Enfield is a good enough coach without the help of the Mobley bros. Is this a one season only phenomenon for Enfield? Mick Cronin is demonstrating he is a good coach, so if we dont keep up, we will be beaten by UCLA in coming seasons.
I’m hoping Enfield proves me wrong and that he can consistently put together well-coached teams. Quite frankly, with the talent the team has on the court, to lose 7 games was not a success, it was a failure.
With the Gonzaga game, we will be playing a very well coached team.

So I guess the quacks aren’t well coached? Or the jayhawks? It’s a bit tiring for people who’ve never won a game as a coach to keep piling on, but whatever. Eat your cake and drink your koolaid, but I’m not having any of it.

USC coaching staff arguably has done the best job during the tourney, certainly among the top 3 (ore state and ucla would be others IMO). That game against Kansas is one for the ages. How often does a perennial powerhouse and 3-seed lose by 34?
LikeLiked by 2 people
For the jayhawks, it would be “never have I ever…”. How many double digit losses did the quacks have this season, I’m pretty sure that’s a small number too. That “Syracuse zone” is in itself impressive, but the way they switch in and out of it into a man to man and back so seamlessly is hard for offenses to adjust to on the fly too…

Btw, how many did the quacks score in the first half vs the hawkeyes? seems we’re undervaluing the quacks offense today, which I get being who they are.

Match up zone is hard to execute well (need lots of communication plus really quick athletic players), but if you do it well, it is so effective, plus it is hard (as a team) to figure it out as it can replicate pressure man D or as you note sliding in and out of a zone versus man. So much tougher than a regular zone, since a regular zone looks like a military formation moving back and forth with ball flow, and typically is not as aggressive as match up zone. Before covid, my youngest was playing club ball, and my kid’s team played against Kenny Smith’s kid’s team, Smith was the coach of his kid’s team, and they were playing matchup zone and did a pretty good job (at the level of 12 year olds). BTW, Smith is a very large man, even though he looks like a waif on TNT next to Shaq and Barkley.

The only things Wolf should bitch about is the Tyndell settlement aka “Thanks Nikias” and woke BS of Madame Folt/Mr. Caruso. If USC was a public company, the entire Board would be forced to resign due to the $1B settlement. Textbook case of the “tone at the top” and “lack of institutional control.”

It possible, but not probable. Michigan is big and beefy, and the ‘Zags are a well-oiled machine.

Cronin trying to throw it away for you, kept Riley in there way too often when he was just getting cooked. The small lineup with Clark was much better. Then decides to not foul. Got away with it, but not great coaching.

Only chance ucla (often a 5 guard offense) has is to wear out their low post Dickinson, 7’1″, 265. Zone them, but Michigan can shoot, and ucla has to run as much as possible to tire out the big guy. Or run Dickinson through a lot of screens, but that means Riley has to be a focal point on offense, nearly impossible to do that with a day of practice. So it boil downs to 2-3 zone and hope Michigan is cold, and that bruins get long rebounds and run the crap out of them.

Where is Scott Wolf today we miss his positive input, and I did not see a THANK YOU ENFIELD this time for some reason perhaps he is jealous.
Folks this Gonzaga game is huge. If we play with heart this team is very capable of winning. No question the winner of this game will probably win it all.
If we can beat some of the top UCLA teams of the 70’s including the Kareem era when we had subpar players anything is possible. After a USC game plan to stall agains a UCLA team led by Lew Alcindor I will never forget the shot by USC forward “Cool Ernie Pool” to win the game at Pauley Pavilion. Talk about a major upset USC was terrible that year, but defeated an undefeated UCLA team in the 60’s.
Gonzaga, is a well oiled machine. We need to get a lead on them, and stick it to them inside with a never say never attitude. If we play like the Kansas game the upset is possible. Evan Mobley must play more aggressive this game against Timme the Gonzaga center who is fantastic off the pick and roll, and gets a ton of garbage baskets inside due to superior inside team passing.
Scott-how about some USC basketball history photographs. A picture of “Cool Ernie Powell”, even former Trojan great Bill Hewitt would be much appreciated now that the fall of the football program is a dead issue with little hope to be repaired until Helton, and Folt are replaced.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes, it would be great to get a lead and get real aggressive. In fact, it would be better than great. It would be ideal. But, if that doesn’t, we have to be mentally ready to take the game back. I don’t want this team going into this thinking all is lost if they fall behind by 10 at half.

We’ve come back before. I’m sure we’ll need to at some point again, but Evan just isn’t the emotional type. He seems to like playing within himself which allows him to stay out of foul trouble. If someone gets the rebound or steals a ball from him, you never see him with the cheap frustration foul trying to get it back. He plays with a high level of maturity and shows good patience.
