USC Morning Buzz: Winners And Losers Of The Week

WINNERS

USC baseball team

Stuck it to Mike Bohn and Co. with a public statement in support of women’s soccer team. That never happened to Lynn Swann. Baseball will be on double-secret probation for the rest of the season.

USC basketball

A slap on the wrist from NCAA, Coach Bohn pretended there was no wrongdoing and Memphis guard Boogie Ellis will transfer in. Warning: Has Andy Enfield gotten any recruits UCLA wanted in the past year?

Aarika Hughes

The USC women’s basketball assistant coach and former player was named head coach at Loyola Marymount.

Isaiah Mobley

He can turn pro or return to USC depending on what he hears about his draft stock.

LOSERS

USC offensive line

The “spin” is the line got split up and didn’t have its first unit together in the scrimmage. OK, that’s why it was so bad.

Todd Orlando

He was head coach of the Gold team, which lost Saturday’s scrimmage, 27-7 to the Cardinal team.

Spring football fans

USC sold less than 5,000 tickets Saturday. Alabama drew 47,218 to its spring scrimmage.

Spring football injuries

USC has lost two potential defensive starters — Max Williams (knee) and Brandon Pili (Achilles) — for 2021 in the first three weeks of spring practice.

  1. Losers: USC athletic department who went out of their way to broadcast the fact that only 4500 tickets were for sale to the spring game (giving 500 to the team family and clergy) no one thought they could get tickets.
Loser: PAC 12 channel due to the perception Clueless Clay has presented at spring games past, most fans were busy Saturday, who knew they were going to stage an actual game- ish- looking thing. There were fewer viewers than a one car funeral.

    1. I agree with the Wolfman! Linemen in my days would kill for me and chop off heads for me to get one more yard! The OL now won’t even look for the real killers! Come on boys get your Bruno Maglis on and get to work!!

      1. You’re supposed to be in repentance, OJ. Put your Bruno’s away, rise and be healed!

      2. Stephen, repentance for what?? In my 22-games at USC, I gained 3,423 yards and scored 36 touchdowns carrying the USC teams that went a combined 19-2-1 while winning a national title and two Pac-8 crowns!

I’m sure I might have even given you an autograph or two! Just thank me and help me look for the real killers!

      3. Jesus answered, Are there not 12 hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not because he seeth the light of this world. But, if a man walks in the night, he stumbleth, for there is no light in him. You may find it here, John chapter 11, verse 9-10……

    1. They care even less about this so-called investigation into it…. btw, I’ve seen that picture (or one remarkably similar) floating around the interweb since the 4/1 incident.

      1. Wow, if it’s the same photo, that’s very interesting — and I guess given who posted it in an article, the opposite of surprising Pud.

      2. Hey Pudly, when did you graduate (I’m class of 84) Us Trojans need to stick together. You may not like what Scott Wolf has to say but he is a proud Trojan. I stand by Trojans no matter what! Bryce Dixen, Osa Masina, O.J. Simpson (prove to me he did it! “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit”) Josh Shaw… all are our brothers!

      3. Jesus, did i read that comment correctly Pud — “Wolf is a proud Trojan?”

That actually set off my Pinocchio Meter louder than when I’m told by a client “my check is in the mail”. 🙂

      4. Pudly, you graduated in 76? I would have never guessed. You look so much younger in your picture. That is right around the time I “finished college”… Well Prop 13 had a lot to do with it because I was a music major and jobs became scarce. I graduated from Cal State San Bernardino in 94 when I finally went back to get into teaching. The days I spent with the additional band members ( guys from JCs to swell the ranks of the TMB were great. And since my parents were USC grads, getting into the games for free was nice.

      5. LOL Rialto — I forgot all about how we used to enlarge our band with ringers for image purposes. I can’t recall which Rose Bowl game it was, but for the parade and game, we even plugged/made inoperable some of their instruments because they didn’t have time to practice the tunes.

      6. Rialto —Don’t let that photo fool you —it’s actually not our Pudly —-[for some reason Pudly’s going with a lovely picture of Chief Justice Roberts as a young girl…..before he transitioned, obviously]…….

      7. Cal 75 —I can see you didn’t keep up with your Super Boy comic books as a kid. Guys like us have so many responsibilities we need 5 or 6 holograms to carry them all out.

    2. What we really want to know is why did we get Mikey Bohn and the gutties got a real basketball coach Mick Cronin? If we are going to raid University of Cincinnati, do it right!

      1. I can answer that SC4

Chancellor at fUCLA said to Cronin, “you run the MBB program, I’ll run the university”.

COB at SC said, “I’ll handle both. Thanks so much for your understanding”.

  2. Okay –Let’s talk football. I just re-watched the spring game & nearly everybody who played on the offensive line looks like they’re in need of a coach. But for the “do not touch the QB” rule, we would have lost Kedon for the remainder of spring, if not the fall. It’s early and we could still pull everything together —but things don’t look good at this point. [And tubby Helton’s weird chuckling during his post game comments shouldn’t give anybody confidence he’s serious about fixing things]…..

    1. Does it matter that the lines they put together for the scrimmage hadn’t been used as a group this spring? I don’t think that Ford and Rodriguez have practiced next to each other before the scrimmage, for an example.

      1. That would matter….. but it wouldn’t make sense….

      2. Nonetheless, they chose to go with giving young guys experience rather than worrying about solidifying line play and communication.

      3. P. S.
Maybe we should be talking more about Helton’s wondrous and amazing mix & match offensive line “experiment” ……

      5. So how’s chocolate chippie doing over there in westwierd, eh theodore? I’m sure it’s a lot more fun over here than on the sow blogs, except of course for that “almost not a loss” in your final bb game…

Sally raised her hand. She said, “My family went to see Rock City and I was fascinated.” The teacher said, “Well, that was good Sally, but I wanted you to use the word ‘fascinate’.”

Little teddie raised his hand, now the teacher knew he was a bit of a scamp, but she was desperate to finish these lessons, so she finally decided there was no way he could damage the word “fascinate.” teddie said, “My aunt Carolyn has a sweater with ten buttons, but her boobs are so big she can only fasten eight!”

  3. Last week, USC basketball was a loser because they needed transfers. This week, they recruited an excellent transfer. So USC should be a winner because they landed Ellis a few days ago, yes? Nope. That is not the way it works at “Inside USC,”

    1. Watch the film. He’s trying to just trying to pull up to avoid contact with another player who is also pulling up. This happens so often when players are trying to minimize contact in drill situations.
