USC Morning Buzz: Winners And Losers Of The Week

WINNERS

USC trustee

Imagine my surprise when a USC trustee told me this about football last week: “It’s a shame things are in the present state. There’s not much we can do about it but we see what’s happened. None of us are blind to what’s going on.”

Joshua Pryor

The football imposter did an interview and wants a real tryout. He’s a legend for telling everyone how Clay Helton was playing golf when he first saw the USC coach in the basement. Also credit USC QB Mo Hasan for getting Pryor to speak.

USC beach volleyball

First NCAA title of the Coach Bohn era! But he didn’t hire Dain Blanton so maybe it’s not really his title.

LOSERS

Clay Helton

Had nerve to say it was “most physical spring yet.”

USC women’s basketball

Still puttering along looking for a coach. It’s not like they didn’t know it was Mark Trakh’s final season. USC has talked to UCLA assistant coach Shannon Perry, Florida State coach Sue Semrau and South Dakota State coach Aaron Johnston among others. Some USC boosters have pushed former USC great/Virginia coach Tina Thompson or her assistant, former USC player Karleen Thompson.

Even if a new coach is hired this week, there’s been no sense of urgency.

USC athletic dept.

Put video of Art Bartner’s 50th anniversary celebration on YouTube only to delete it the next day. People were supposed to pay at least $100 to watch John Baxter congratulate Bartner and then people like me watched it for free!

USC baseball uniforms

These jerseys and caps are not Trojan worthy.

  1. When no gnus is the news, we knew the news about gnus was bad.
Loser this column. When I was a kid if a record played something and skipped back to play it again we called it a broken record.
This column has become a broken record. It turns out Joshua Pryor has earned more time inside USC, than the starting running back. And there is no proof that he’s related to Richard Pryor. He won’t get a tryout he outed the head coach.

    1. You have to hand it to Scott — he knows potential sources belong in the “Winners” column.

  2. For once, I agree with the Wolfman. Those caps and jerseys are ugly as hell.

The Trustee comments are no surprise. There’s too much scandal outside of football. It’s no shock the University has bigger fires to put out than a terrible football coach.

    1. You have a point Harry, maybe the baseball team is trying to hide in camouflaged uniforms. I couldn’t see them from the waist up. Although I wore my Trojan shirt on Mother’s day, I didn’t expect to be noticed. Only one person asked about Volleyball yesterday.

      1. Instant winner?? That’s a lot to put on any coach coming into the program right now. I’d settle for a good recruiting class, and better all around play. Then the following season challenging for the Pac12 and playoffs.

      2. May I add one additional baseball improvement to be made for 2022?

    2. There is NO bigger fire to put out than Helton. Rightly or wrongly, Helton is the face of the university —not Folt or Caruso.
No one outside L. A. knows Folt or Caruso —but millions know that USC is represented on the field by a dim looking man breathing through his mouth….

    1. That mantra will get you into Heaven —but for Scott’s purposes it’s probably better he head in the opposite direction….

  3. Agree with you 💯 on the baseball uniforms. The official school colors are cardinal and gold, not camouflage and cardinal, not black and cardinal, etc. And who the hell sanctioned the wearing of white shoes? Someone in the athletic department, Bohn, needs to put a rubber band around their head and snap out it.

    1. …And, employing Descartes’ “reciprocal notion” principle, shouldn’t UCLA be at the bottom of the “Losers” category…?

  4. Remember when blog SUCC Rah-Rah’s refused to celebrate SUCC Women’s team NC’s as unworthy?

When was the last time a bozo men’s team actually won a NCAA tournament style NC?

      1. Agree & disagree, Pudly. Given how things are going for UCLA when it comes to “money time” in any athletic contest, I think it’s wise for them to embrace the new “almost didn’t lose” standard as their metric for success…….
