Morning Buzz: Is 50 Percent Success Rate Good Enough For USC?

Remember a couple years ago when USC signed six offensive linemen?

A source tells me that at the time Clay Helton said that only three would ever end up playing at USC.

A 50 percent success rate? Sounds about right for Helton.

Actually, it’s not entirely unreasonable to “figure” that only 50 percent of offensive linemen will pan out but it’s a little different when you are certain that will happen. But that’s because USC’s recruited some linemen in recent years that weren’t rated as high as you would expect for a program the size of USC and it was obvious they won’t play.

So it’s not case of someone not reaching their potential, which is an inherent risk of recruiting. Instead, it is players who didn’t really have the expected skills to begin with, so you already know in advance.

  1. This is SO Clay Helton. Not focused on recruiting down linemen. Doesn’t develop players. Clay Helton is a loser and so is Bohner and Brennan.

  2. Clay is an okay carpenter but a lousy developer (some, I’m looking you P76, would say he’s not even say he’s not a good carpenter, but for my analogy I’ll leave it. )
He buys fancy trimming for the house he’s building, but neglects the foundation.
He’s mentioned in the Bible. He’s he carpenter who builds his house on the sand. The first Alabama storm that comes along destroys it. ( Carroll 3:16 you can look it up)
One hallmark of USC has always been its line on both side of the ball. Helton would put a solid gold doorknob on a portapotty.
So no 50% is not good enough for football.

    1. 80 scholies, 22 1st team each year + #2 depth and ST.

#3 on the depth chart usually first year and others that rarely see time.

50% would be optimistic for any team imo. It’s a competition. Someone wins, someone loses. Losers transfer to a team with easier competition.
Rare is any coach that can take a 2* out of HS such as JJ Watt and he ends up being All Pro.
It’s up to the athlete to improve themselves. All a coach can do is impart knowledge and provide the positive environment & encouragement for the athlete to live up to their potential. Coaches aren’t on the field.

      1. Not the point! You dumb fuck. You are nothing but a bitch ass faggot! The point is Clay knows 50% of his recruits won’t pan out. Why ? Because they should not be playing D1 football! You fucking retard!!!
You did all that math for depth charts for what!? Alabama 3’s will start at SC. Why do you think SC got Sospher!? Oh you are just a LOSER Cal fan, so technically you don’t know shit about a championship football team! Geezer!! Stay up north with the rest of the faggots! 😂😂😂

      2. Basically, I’m with you Pudly and Cal75. [I’m almost always with you]. I always thought it was kinda a hoot when law students who flunked the bar blamed it on a bad Evidence or Con Law professor. That said, some coaches consistently have more success with 2 and 3 stars than others…

    1. People of all colors want and deserve good policing in their neighborhoods. I served as a law school dean in Oakland for many years. Over that period I interviewed thousands of applicants. I remember EVERYBODY who lived in the poorer sections telling me they were sick of hearing gun shots at night and seeing drug dealers on their corners …and complaining about the fact Oakland’s small police force wasn’t big enough to do the job of cleaning things up. Reducing the size of that outmanned police force is suicidal.

      1. MG, I know you have your $800.00 crumbling mausoleum seats reserved for the SJSt. game. The game is a CFB biggy that week. The Fox CFB ex-bozo cabal, AKA – NFL busts, will all be there – f**king yuge.

      1. I was too obscure – my bad – what I intended to say was that no stadium that empty could be anything other than social distancing during a covid sports event.

      2. They must’ve seen the pandemic coming and started practicing social distancing well in advance. Much like their football team who have been socially distant from the end zone for ages.

      3. My kid attends Pasadena public school. They give away tickets to the Bruin games to the kids twice a year. End zone seats. Still, very few people show up even though it is free. I attended one and the stadium looks like it does in the photo. I was able to ignore the end zone and walk right into a seat at the 40 yard line. Nobody was there. Nobody cared.

      4. Yep…. bruins always ahead of the curve. They saw the “collusion” thing before anybody else. They sensed the inherent racism infecting the architecture of the Capital Rotunda way before others. And they were first in line to “sense something bad” —maybe a pandemic, maybe a global catastrophe —was waiting for us in 2020.

      5. Plowhorse –you discovered my preferred seating arrangement: buy cheapest tickets, scan the stadium, move to the best empty seats (with a lame but ready excuse if the real ticket holders show up after halftime)….

      1. You still act like losing is winning. What an f’ing idiot loser program that tries to portray that message. And you’re just the wannabe punk that buys in. Yippee‼️ Our losses were by less than yours, doesn’t matter that you’ve beaten us EVERY TIME WE’VE PLAYED THE LAST TWO YEARS..
we are better than you, it doesn’t matter that you continually beat us because we played and lost to the same team you did by less points…

        Cackle, cackle, cackle, cackle…

  4. Mr. Bohn if you can’t give Coach Enfield a raise after a great season why not give them a bonus offer for next season so they will stick around, and keep building the program. 1) Level 1 Bonus if you make the NCAA tournament 2) Level 2 -if you make the Sweet 16 and 3) Level 3 if you reach the Elite 8 and 4) Level 4 if you make the Final 4.

I understand not giving them a raise this season, but you need to provide a bonus incentive program for next year or you are probably in danger of losing your entire coaching staff after next season.

  5. What is with USC and O-Linemen? It seems as if the really good O-Linemen are looking at USC like the plague. No 4 or 5 star O-Lineman wants to get anywhere’s near USC.

      1. I really think that CH could be gone soon. I know that not everyone agrees with this but I do think that Carol Folt would like to see the football team return to the glory days. I say that because of the way she fired Lynn Swann. Swann was a USC legend. I think that he has made both the College football and NFL Hall of Fame. Yet she didn’t hesitate to fire him. She just called him in her office one morning and said “I’m sorry but we won’t be needing your services anymore….adios amigo”. Then she went out and hired someone that I think is a real good AD. Regardless of what you might think of him, he is certainly light years ahead of the last 2 guys who were in there. I think that they are expecting more than just a Pac-12 championship. If CH is going to get his act together, he had better do it soon. 8-4 is not going to make it anymore.
