USC Scrimmages

The hypemasters will try to make today’s scrimmage but Kedon Slovis barely played and Keaontay Ingram was out. Drake London was out.

The defense was ahead of the offense, which is always the case a week into camp. Jaxson Dart had three TD passes but two were in a short-field, simulated situations.

  1. I see they brought in another receiver(Caleb Douglas). I saw some tape of him. I wasn’t overly impressed. One way to tell if someone is a big time player is to look at the people that are recruiting him. If the football powers are recruiting him, then he must be pretty good. I don’t see that with this guys. If you are going to bring in another 3 star….bring in an O-Lineman…..he might develope.

    1. She-don Slovis probably hurt her elbow again. That girl is done, she should transfer to a JC or just give up football altogether.

    1. It’s Dart. And he’s a better prospect than the guy who threw 82 TD’s yesterday. Dart is quicker on his feet and I know he’s faster than a 5.4 40 (Brown’s time).

      1. That doesn’t mean Clay Helton won’t play him or break him. I mean he screwed up the greatest quarterback recruit in the history of the world who’s now thriving at Georgia. I don’t even bother paying attention to who any of these dudes are until they get time on the field or the person their behind sucks while on the field. Putting any stock in recruiting rankings is a fool’s errand. It’s worth as much as Mel Kilper and Todd McShay mock drafts. I mean, high school recruiting is the lowest totem on the sports media totem pole. If you’re good at it you’re not going to be doing it for long as you’ll easily graduate to the next most important head on the totem.

  2. No question Dart will get playing time this year. We need a guy that can take off on 2nd or 3rd down, and in the red zone to keep the defense honest especially with a limited running game. We need another Rodney Peete he was so good at picking the extra yards in short yard situations, and could throw the well well so he was a legitimate dual threat.

    1. And… we have to know when we’ve used Dart’s feet enough on any given series. I remember a Rose Bowl game with Rodney getting the ball down to like the 3 or 4 yard line—and getting hit hard on a called run…and running the ball again on the succeeding down… and fumbling. He was exhausted.

  3. Michael: I remember attending the 1985 Aloha Bowl in Hawaii when Rodney Peete started the game as a freshman, and tore his ACL. SC played Alabama in that game, and I remember he had to run for his life in that game due to a once again poor offensive line so things were much the same when Ted Tollner was the coach. That was a very enjoyable experience at Aloha Stadium on a beautiful December day until that happenned to Rodney early in the game. Rodney, obviously made a nice comeback from that injury when Larry Smith took over, and got the SC running game going again. Larry Smith, was a very underated coach, and his teams played very physical on both the offensive and defensive lines which brought success back to the program.

    1. Glad you remember Larry, tommyd. Yes, he was underrated. Over the course of a long career he lifted Arizona, USC and Missouri out of the doldrums. He woulda taken Notre Dame at South Bend, too, if the refs didn’t get ‘involved.’ His teams won way more than they lost—and they played with toughness and character.
      P.S.
      Hope you’re doing well!

      1. I know. I know. But he’s also the same Larry Smith who gave us some exciting victories over UCLA and a great Rose Bowl win.

      2. Smith after fresno st loss interview…sc fans better learn to accept mediocre teams from now on,and like it,’cause that’s just the way it is…sounds like something hellton would say if he was on a lie detector, that is all he has produced, and what he is paid to produce, and sc admin likes it.
