First, some housekeeping. I haven’t posted since the day Clay Helton got fired because of previously planned hospital visit.
So I’ll start with what I know on the coaching search. Here’s what I hear from Heritage Hall:
- Mario Cristobal, Oregon. USC has identified him as its top choice.
- Matt Campbell, Iowa State; Luke Fickell, Cincinnati. The up-and-comers are the next choices.
- James Franklin, Penn State. He is very interested in the USC job despite what anyone says.
- Eric Bienemy, Kansas City; Jack Del Rio. They want the job but does USC want them?
- Chris Petersen. He has zero interest in the job but USC would love to talk to him.
Hope you have a full recovery Scott & it was nothing to serious.

That’s a bullshit article that has been posted to distract everyone from what’s going to be announced at 1:00pm, Arizona time on Friday. I live in Arizona and worked on the audit and the canvass, and can tell you that Trump won in a landslide. There are going to be criminal charges filed against election officials with the state attorney general. What effect it has on the presidency remains to be seen.

Welcome back Wolfie! Hope you have a speedy recovery. The Cristobal rumor makes sense.
1. He has dominated the Pac-12
2. You weaken a direct rival in the PAC-12
3. He has shown a skill in recruiting linemen to Oregon, imagine what he can do at USC
4. He comes from Saban’s coaching tree.

Welcome back, Wolfman. Guess you know know how much you’re loved and needed {LOL}. After all, where else can our community spout off whatever comes to mind?
Here are my thoughts on the following hires:
Cristobal – is probably waiting on the Miami job, if he decides to leave Oregon,
Franklin – still can’t get over how he F/U the last 2 minutes of the Rose Bowl loss to SC. I was happy but was fully aware that their HC did a major F/U. He has yet to be at the top of the heap in the Big10 [one year does not a domination make].
Fickle – much like Cristobal, he’s probably waiting on Ohio State given that there is noise about Day eyeing the NFL. He just comes across as a guy who loves the mid-west, so why leave?
I read/heard that the first step would be to make the top coaches say No to you. So go after Lincoln Riley, Nick Saban [yes, we can dream BIG – carrot would be that he could win National Championships at 3 different schools] and Brian Kelly [he could actually comppensate key assistants here]. Otherwise go after top young NFL coordinators [Josh McDaniels [until Belichick retires] who does have some HC experience, Joe Brady [won Naty at LSU] downside no HC experience but probably has strong Rolodex.

Why would Cristobal leave Oregon for the cesspool of Clown U’s FB program, where once or twice a month bozo’s shoot themselves in the foot.
Also I imagine Phil Knight could start a bidding war for Cristobal that Clown U couldn’t possibility win. Knight is worth 3x the bozo Univ. endowment fund.
Truly, SUCC has no hat or cattle, just blatant, loudmouth, loser/SUCCer arrogance. How are SUCC’s sales of their $29.99, runner up Pac-12 FB Champion game Tee’s progressing? Are they 2 for a $0.05 yet?
Oh yeah, Clown U will big foot Oregon. I mean SUCC FB couldn’t handle Stanford, an unranked, 17 point ‘dog at the crumbling mausoleum.

Surprise Surprise. It’s the Wolfman…risen from the dead. Of the ones that you mentioned I would a least talk to Petersen. After that(of the 5 that you mentioned) I would go with Franklin. I’d also take a look at the Oregon State coach. I think that he is a real good coach. Also Kalen Deboer at Fresno State. His record at Sioux Falls in 5 season was 67-3. He won 3 national championships and finished 2nd twice. Last Year he was 3-3 in his 1st year at FSU in a rebuilding year after FSU went 4-8 in 2019. This year he should be 4-0. The only game that they lost this year was to Oregon and I watched that game….I thought that they should have won. What about the coach at Coastal Carolina.
I’m curious to hear who the Wolfman likes personally. He picked James Franklin(at Vanderbilt) a long time ago when nobody else was interested. He turned out to be right about him. I’m curious who he would pick today.

Scooter, we don’t want Eric Biehnemy. Doesn’t he have a police record? Plus he has never been a head coach. If SC does that then they should just stay with Donte Williams. No Peterson. Cristobal would be okay. Franklin, hasn’t won any major bowl games.

Just one guys opinion but my thoughts are that Cristobal is another Sark. Great recruiter. Not a great coach. The only diffference is that Cristobal knows how to build a team from the line(O & D) back. Football games are won or lost on the LOS. I don’t think that Cristobal would take the SC job because he’s got a good situation at Oregon and I think that he wants the Miami job and I think he feels that that job is about to come open(which it is).

No way! full weight bearing after a meniscal repair? That must be a first. James Wiseman of the Warriors (meniscal repair 5 months ago) still isn’t even cleared to jump. Only thing I can think of is that the tear must have been tiny. It is common after they shave off the tear and pull it out to have a quick recovery. But the repairs, in which the tear is sewn back together, has a notoriously long recovery time. Fingers crossed.

To me Christobal either stays at Oregon or goes to Miami.
Bob Stopps must not be interested.
Matt Campbell it’s too big a step from Iowa State to USC. I think he needs to take a next level job in the SEC, or Big Ten before he would be ready for a big time job.
Eric Bienemy- bright offensive coordinator, but no head coaching experience. We can’t afford to gamble on an offensive coordinator becoming a great head coach.
Jack Del Rio- not excited because he had never coached in college football. Might be past his prime as a coach.
I think USC will end up choosing between James Franklin and Luke Fickell probably Fickell because he worked for Bohn before. Both would be decent hires, but still have not won a national title or made it to the college playoffs. If Fickell turns it down the job goes to Franklin.
My thinking is if USC is trying to steal Christobal from Oregon why not go after David Shaw at Stanford, Ed Orgeron , or the head coach at Florida who are both solid head coaches. I like the ideaa of bringing an SEC Coach to the Pac 12 who understands physical football.

Let’s see how Williams does. He’s already done two things that were long overdue (a) he’s making the players compete for the starting position every week, and (b) he has also brought in officials to the practices to speed things up and more closely replicate game-day situations. You’re going to see the team being penalized a lot less as the season goes on.
If Williams wins 7 or 8 of the 10 games he coaches (excluding a bowl) he may have the inside track for the job.

He’s never been a HC or a co-ordinator. I really don’t think that he will win 7 or 8 games. I wouldn’t be surprised to see SC lose to OSU. He may someday become a good HC. But without any HC resume, can we take that chance and possibly end up with another CH for another 4-5 years?

If Cristobal came to USC that would be the best thing that he could do for himself,
If he kept on winning the way he has at Oregon and he would because he will get 4 and 5 star offensive line players. If he went to Miami and turned that program around he would not get the publicity or fame that he would if he came to US C. He would be put in the Pete Carroll class that would never happen at Miami or if he stayed at Oregon. I still hope they go after Bob Stoops , he is a proven winner.

Matt Campbell has a 56% winning percentage at Iowa State – 37-29. Perhaps he is doing more with less talent than the schools he is playing against, but this record seems to be a red flag.
Fickell has a 76% winning percentage at Cincy – though he struggled when he coached OSU in 2011, and I believe he has only 1 win against a ranked team.
Stoops has been away from the game for five years, and is 9-9 in bowl games.
Franklin seems to be able to win, though he has plenty of baggage following him (telling a player who had a knife pulled on him by a teammate not to rat the guy out to the cops).
Cristobal has had two good years at Oregon, on his way to a third, but he was awful at Florida International (his previous HC job).
Bottom line, all these guys have warts that are warning signs. Isn’t there someone else?
Personally, I might pick Paul Chryst at Wisconsin ahead of these guys. His teams are super disciplined, and he typically is around 10-3 in a tough conference with mostly 3 star guys.

Somehow probably not right now but maybe in a few years I think Lane Kiffin will try to get an interview to go another chance at SC. Might not happen now, but a few years from now if an when USC is seeking another new head coach.
I still think Orgeron would come back. If we are offering mega bucks to Christobal why not David Shaw or Orgeron, or the guy at Florida or Georgia-Kirby Smart… No more assistant coaches or coordinators if your paying top buck go after a proven head coach especially someone in the SEC since it appears to win a National Title you have to beat the SEC. Fickell comes from a weaker conference, and Campbell hasn’t even won the Big 12 but has built up a broken no name program like Iowa State.

I agree. I’m still not convinced that coach O is a great HC. He had great co-ordinators when he did win. Mike Ditka and the Bears won the super bowl in 1985. Then his DC(Buddy Ryan) left. The bears went steadily downhill from that point on.

Personally, I think Kiffin may be the best offensive mind in football today. Currently, Ole Miss is #1 in the nation in total offense, averaging over 635 yards per game. They are balanced too. Their getting 300 YPG in rushing and 336 YPG in passing in only his 2nd year at Ole Miss. And this is in the SEC not the MAC. If they can get him they should go for him. Unfortunately, I think SC is too “woke” to go for Kiffin.

And the Raiders – may have gone far that year if he sat DC on that Xmas eve game …He’d be like a more intimidating and slightly less nuttier PC, and with his East bay connections could recruit the heck out of this area where the best like Najee and Mixon don’t even give SC a sniff, and the East Bay is growing a lot – multiple huge (3K+) high schools out there with big Pop Warner leagues feeding the HS teams.

I could be wrong, but JDR seems to me as if he’d be too much of a hard case. Would not be able to connect with college kids of today. In a pre transfer portal world, his style might have worked. But I’m not so sure in this new world of spoiled prima donnas.

JDR would NOT be a disaster cuz he’s incompetent (just the opposite is true). He’d be a disaster cuz college players wouldn’t relate to him. He’d have to become something he’s not in order to recruit and manage the team. He’s just not the right fit at this juncture of his life…

MG – You could be right (unlike as to Shatner and the Oz!), but I think it’s a 50/50 proposition (so should be put on the list as an interesting contingency, not as the primary objective) – Saban has no problem pulling the act off …I think it call comes down to two essential things, and if JDR could do it, or assemble a staff that would facilitate (which I think is what Pete did): (1) Identify through private discussions true leaders that can take the heat and can be used to deliver the tough verbals to/use staff for (Lombardi played that tune to perfection with the ’60s Packers); and (2) Sell the NFL – Pete did it, and so did JRob and McKay (and that’s what Saban is doing – he has essentially constructed USC southeast, to include poaching players from the west coast).

Plus I’m not crazy about bringing a pro coach into the college ranks although it certainly works sometimes. Their systems quite often is too complex for the college players(unless they have coached college in the past)

Seriously folks – who on any of these short lists has accomplished more than JDR? He was a class act with the Raiders, even willing to let Carr have his own QB whisperer by firing Musgrave after the 12-4 season, which was disastrous. Was so well liked MD gave him an extension which he then had to eat to hire Gruden. Saban was an avg B10 coach and an avg NFL coach for his cup of coffee in the league. Do you honestly think Saban connects with kids better than a guy like JDR would?
This is becoming such an obvious choice to me, and since no one is lining up the qualifications for a serious discussion I felt compelled to start. Bohner has to see the same.

You seriously trying to compare JDR to the greatest college coach of all time? Your argument is great. Just ignore his 7 national championships and what do you have? Well, you have an average college and NFL coach. In other words, Jack Del Rio.

I would not be surprised to see SC lose to OSU. OSU is a real good team We’re coming off a big win which probably means that we will be down this week and without Dart. Slovis was unbelievably great his first year. He’s never been the same since. OSU is much better coached than SC. We should seriously look at Jonathan Smith as a HC.

Would not be at all surprised to see us struggle. Will not be at all surprised to see Slovis blankly looking around for the PERFECTLY open receiver. [But] I’ll be VERY surprised if we lose.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all! Maybe I’m just giving this OSU coach too much credit because I really do think that he is an outstanding coach. We’ll see.

This what I heard from the Helton household is that Tyson Helton is the #1 choice.

Hard not to consider him the frontrunner after the job he did taking Sam from spectacular in 2016 to just above average in 2017….

Chris Petersen would rather struggle and paddle upstream with Boise and Washington vs taking a stroll down easy-street with USC. It doesn’t have to be hard … lighten up buddy! Fans forget National Championship coaches, let alone the ones that never do.

Miami vs USC vis-à-vis Cristobal … Miami nice private school, but doesn’t measure up to USC. Football-wise, USC was Miami before Miami was Miami and was Miami again since. With the right coach, USC can have free-reign recruiting-wise for 1500+ miles while Miami has to go up against Florida and the SEC. Don’t say that Cristobal is pining to back to Miami. Maybe he would prefer USC and the big city to Nike U!?

Miami-native Cristobal probably enjoys boating. Mario come to Los Angeles, buy a big-azz boat, dock it at the Marina or Long Beach, check out all the great coves at Palos Verdes, check out Catalina Island, etc. No big-azz boats in Eugene.
