Sunday Night With Donte Williams

Donte Williams said Drake Jackson played sparingly in the second half because of what Oregon State was doing.

Would you really take your best defensive player off the field because of a scheme?

And isn’t Jackson good enough for any scheme?

  • Williams said freshman QB Jaxson Dart isn’t on crutches and still “week-to-week” until he is cleared to play.
  • Williams said defensive end Korey Foreman is 100 percent but dinged up.
  • “No matter what happens, we’re still going to fight on. I promise you we’ll be back,” Williams said.

    1. USC might have to cue up Sinatra’s “Witchcraft” instead to fix the mess that is the football program.

  1. Trojan D gave up 320 yards on the ground, another 215 in the air. Can’t recall a worse defensive effort since 2016 ‘Bama game, or perhaps the ’17 domer game. If I didn’t know better, I would have said the jerseys were reversed between the two teams.

    1. There was always the Oregon game in 2012 where USC gave up 61 points, 304 yards passing and 426 yards rushing for a total of 730 total yards offense. After that game Monte Kiffin went to his son and told him “I’ll finish off the season but after the season you need to find yourself another DC”. Of course, Lane only lasted 5 games into 2013.

      1. parcelman,
I was going to say that I’d like to hear those same words from Todd and Graham …but then I realized they don’t NEED to say them….

    2. Dear 67- I was trying all spring and summer to alert you and others that this team would be this dysfunctional. I mean I was 6 days too early for Moron to be fired. I told you that Todd Orlando was a 2nd year disaster & I mentioned that Donte Williams would be named interim coach. This season is going to get uglier and it would be wise to be mentally prepared. No school has USC traditions period! My respite is starting in 42 days as basketball starts with an incredible schedule. My Wooden award winner is going to be Isiah Mobley. There are truly only 2 candidates for football #1 is Bobby Stoops ( won title & hired Lincoln Riley) or my backup choice Mario Cristobal. I’m going to start off the right way & end this post with two words “THANKS Enfield

    1. Not to sound like a know it all because I don’t know much but I do know they cant continue with thoughts and memories of the Clay Helton years on the field and off the field.
When they can all be honest with themselves by putting the “Father-like” bond and relationship they had with Clay Helton to the back burner and realize they’re an (Because of Helton) overconfident and unproven football program that became lazy in all areas required to be a championship contender. Physically they are one of the softess SC teams ever (In my lifetime at least 12-12-1981).
You practice the way you play.
You play the way you practice.
They have to change their ways and throw out the last few years.
Practice can’t be the best and toughest practice for one day or for one week when it’s Notre Dame or Ucla week. They have to have those regularly. They can’t except less.
Tempo. Energy. Execution. Focus has to be high at all times. Competitive no matter what because they are too comfortable.
Pete Carroll practiced one way. Nick Saban only knows one way and it’s hard.
It could take time. They could start looking like a different group but I don’t expect anything from them until a new Head Coach knocks the Helton out of them.

      1. Perfectly put. The Helton approach to God, family and football really set in —deal with each as a superficiality. I think there is one more distraction at work, though. ALL their coaches know they are gone. They aren’t giving it 100% cuz they’re in the process of looking elsewhere. And it shows.
This team needs to man up It’s “up to them.” That’ s how the song goes, right? Time for a “no coaches allowed, team meeting.” There has to be ONE player with enough leadership to call that meeting, right?

      2. That’s right. Even after the Oregon Sttate loss the only one that will be going about this determined will be Donte Williams. Good guy and has been a positive for SC since he stepped on campus but the truth is we still haven’t seen him prove he can be the secondary coach. They like the rest of the team haven’t been any less or better.. I absolutely agree about a leader taking charge and would hope we could see that play out. They need to realize that with all New Head Coach talk around them there are two things that are no question clear. 1st is that there old coach was fired for a reason and that it was 2 years too late. The 2nd is despite him being the main reason they are where they are the players need to look in the mirror and wake up because they are still the ones that are on the field not executing blocks or tackling. So a player only meeting should definitely be something they have asap. Also they better believe that things can get worse if they don’t show they have talent from this point they may see a bunch of High Profile coaches pass on USC because they were turned off by the effort they seen from the team.

  3. The Clay Helton Hangover continues. There was never going to be a “quick fix” to years of mediocrity. Full change with a proven, winning, head coach. No up-and-comers, and certainly no interims elevated to Head Coach, again. Prove to us winning cures all and get this right. Now and for years to come.

  4. I say take a serious look at Jonathan Smith as the next HC. He has coached under Mike Riley, Dennis Erickson and Chris Petersen. Out of their 535 yards, 428 came from 3 guys. Nolan, Baylor and Fenwick. Chance Nolan was a 3 star out of high school. B.J. Baylor was a 3 star out of high school. Deshawn Fenwick was a 3 star out of high school. Tyjohn Lindsey was a 4 star but he didn’t come to OSU until transferring out of Nebraska. Smith knows how to develope players. He takes 3 stars and turns them into 5 stars. At SC they take 5 stars and turn them into 3 stars. This guy knows how to create a running game. I don’t know that he would take the SC job. He is an OSU grad. But his roots are right here in SoCal. He was born in Pasadena and played QB at Glendora HS. We should at least talk to the guy.

  5. I see a possible win at Ariz…the rest ? depends when DART returns…Slovis cannot get it done unless injuries or disease hit the rest of the teams defenses…that O line is a work, barely in progress. Anything is possible, just not probable, Ore St thundered over the trojans…they couldn’t slow’em down, tackle …SC is still an unprepared team, for even Pac 12 teams. I know they will try but the hellton culture is soft football prep. There is a chance williams can change some of that, but remember he was part of it under hellton, and did nothing, like AD and those above him. He could have at least complained like some of the former athletes did.

  6. I think the focus must shift to Bohn. It is up to him to diagnose the
problems, and find the solution. I for one am not confident he has
that ability. He either saw and failed to act or simply failed to recognize the problems under Clay Helton. In either case his failure to initiate change for as long as he did does not bode well for his ability to get this program back on track.

    1. I think from all evidence he was told hellton would not be fired, but when they saw attendance figures and protest it caused higher ups to change their feeble illogical minds…money does that

  7. Donte will regret taking this gig, he isn’t helping his career … and who says the new guy will want him around. The new guy should clean house after a decade of these hucksters. These ‘great’ recruiters are a dime a dozen so Donte can easily be replaced.

    1. Yeah –lot of people think Donte is a sure thing for head recruiter next year. He’s not. New coach isn’t going to want any reminders of Helton and Donte isn’t going to stand for being demoted.

  8. Clay Helton biggest mistake was bringing the Air Raid Offense to USC, and with that it brought several offensive line coaches, a lack of focus on offensive line recruitment, and the worst thing of all Graham Harrell who abandoned the running game because it is not a key ingredient of the offense nor are lineman. We have become a non-physical flag football team under Harrell with most of the offense based on just wide receivers and QB’S. The defensive became soft after practicing against this offense, and on that side of the ball we recruited alot of safeties. and defensive backs but very few talented linebackers, and defensive lineman. Every day in practice it is the finesse offense vs. the soft defense, and each year it showed more in more on game day. We now match up well with the few other crazy coaches and teams that run the air raid offense, but not teams that try to run the football as a top priority which is the majority. We are a one dimensional team= play soft and we are fine. We cannot play a physical football game because OUR COACHING STAFF NEVER TAUGHT AND DEMANDED IT IN PRACTICE. You play the games like you practice unfortunately Clay Helton brought something new to USC, and HE DIDN’T NEED TO.

My recommendation to Donte Williams is to “flatten the football” in practice for the remainder of the season, and prepare your team to play physical on both sides of the ball. We need to match up with our opponents style of play rather than sticking to air finesse football which obviously is not working, and has not worked for a long time.

    1. hellton never had any internal toughness, his lies were just manipulations and a facade…he never ever had any intention to get sc into a tough minded ,and physical toughness to play top 10 type football. Intentionally skipping practices is not the way one prepares for playoff or Bowl games, he was and is a loser.

  9. What Donte would say if he could – “I’ve still got the two idiots who were running the offense and defense, so how does anyone expect change?”
