Discuss The USC-Colorado Game

USC wins, 37-14 but did we learn anything?

The defense still looks sloppy at times even against Colorado. Isaiah Pola-Mao is not having a great season either, allowing three TDs in the past 2 weeks.

Drake London and Drake Jackson are playing well.

Frankly, I would have played Miller Moss at the end. What happens if Kedon Slovis gets hurt?

So everything is status quo. USC remains an extremely ordinary team.

  1. Discipline (penalties) remains a huge issue. London will be doubled the rest of the season.
I liked Barlow’s energy and his fighting for extra yards, and Ingram exploded a few times.
34 carries for 221 yards is a positive.
Slovis is still not seeing open targets.
    Colorado is an awful team.
Need lighting to strike for us to compete against the domers.

The only reason why I hired him, is because he already lived in the Colorado area. So hopefully whenever he falls asleep on the sidelines during the game, one of his assistants will wake him up .

  3. Colorado was terrible. They couldn’t run the ball. They couldn’t stop the run on defense. They couldn’t pass the ball. They couldn’t stop the pass on defense. Quite often they couldn’t get lined up on defense before the snap of the ball. I’m picking Utah to beat SC. They coach to hire is Luke Fickell….IF YOU CAN GET HIM!

      (3) If Bohn snatches Fickell all will be forgiven.

Right off the top of my head, the only one that I can remember is the Texas game and they should have one that one. When you are ahead by 12 points with a little over 6 minutes left, you should win the game. They had a great offense but issues on defense that year.

  7. Update – USC Head Football Search.

Luke Fickell now has to be the top choice to be our next head coach. I have never seen a team dominate Notre Dame physically on both sides of the ball in a long time which was quite impressive. I am sure Bohn will make him our 1st choice now that he has beat Notre Dame, and his team looks headed to the college football playoffs. The question is will be accept, and can USC wait until January to secure a new head coach.
It will certainly help Cincy’s chances to make the playoffs now that Oregon fell today to Stanford, and did not look very impressive.

James Franklin will probably be the No. 2 choice if Fickell decides not to come.

If UCLA beats Arizona State tonight I see them beating Oregon at the Rose Bowl in a couple of weeks with USC being only team left that can knock them off at the end of the season, but we must continue to improve in creating a consistent running game, and stopping it on defense.

Drake Jackson woke up today……..finally. But we are still very weak at nose tackle, and good teams will attacking the middle of our defense.

    1. Donte and the USC program have two choices here. First choice is to continue to try to make the most of what they currently have. That means just improving the culture of the team and trying to win some games. This is the low risk option.

The other choice is to fire Graham Harrell on Monday and add a fifth page to the existing four pages of the playbook for the offense. And each week evolve the offense. Really work on building out an offense where we actually stretch opposing defenses and create the diversity for consistent movement of the ball down the field against even good defenses. Create an offense that doesnt require London to carry the team on his back.

If we choose to keep GH we will get a little better, but not much better. And the players can keep their heads up and Donte can keep the team spirit high despite failures and a lack of major improvement.

I support the team either way, because we have the change we need coming soon. A new head coach and firing most of the current coaches. I hope Donte and Bohn decide to take the second path and the extra risk that is entailed by firing our OC mid-season.

Helton really had zero control of the offense and giving the job to Donte really only helped to solve the culture problem and improved practices and accountability. To make real improvements, the offense needs offensive scheme tweaks that go beyond Graham Harrell.

I hope Donte has the guts to demand the ability to rock this boat. I would rather have a team that loses that has been giving a fighting chance, than a team that is handcuffed by an incompetent offensive coordinator.

  8. USC won today that’s not news. Sadly the showcase of Drakes is about to lead to NFL contracts for them and nothing for next season. Our line couldn’t push a coconut into the Grand Canyon and the running backs have more rear end collision plays than Allstate and State farm can handle in a year. They carry the ball like a loaf of bread when they’re running up field. And the head coach should fire the defensive backs coach, he’s not doing his job. Finally I think it’s time to put an end to the traditional post practice long -snap target practice. Putting the ball 20 yards behind the quarterback is a rare skill taught at USC, it comes from not putting your quarterback under center.

  9. I wouldn’t get too excited because USC’s defense held Colorado to 160 yards passing and 80 yards rushing. We are just not talking about a great offense when we talk about the buffalo’s. Minnesota held them to 82 yards passing and -19 yards rushing.

      5. Like mentioned during our discussion about the prospect of hiring Lynn…what you see at ASU at present is what Lynn at USC would be like (just a little better because the scale starts higher…which also means the disappointments are even lower)…ups and downs…lots of improvements…but lots of letting wins get away…the Desert Diablos won’t win more than 7 or 8 under Herm, and I think Lynn at USC would be 7-9 each year…but it is refreshing to at least see a team that is spirited and competitive, and yeah, Daniels…USC, other than Sam, hasn’t had one of that caliber since Leinart…but he doesn’t fit the USC mold…at least not yet…one suspects that will change with the next hire.

      6. I don’t think Lynn is in Herm’s category as a motivator. 7. That was his MO in the NFL to…took both Jets and Chiefs to playoffs (latter during what was supposed to be rebuilding year…which success cost him his job when the next year the results were more what would be expected in a rebuild)…long-standing belief is a great motivator, good generalist, not big on details…Lynn was like that with Bolts (the players really responded to him during first couple of years), but then the results slid as they lost one winnable game (almost historic improbabilities in the number of close losses…and the number of injuries incurred year-after-year) after another…but pretty comparable, if they were to go that route (which I hope isn’t the case…it would be an improvement over what USC has had in the post-Pete era, but like with Larry Smith, would eventually prove unsatisfying and probably would show diminishing returns over time).

But they want to groom a QB for the NFL rather than win games? And they have some big bodies that can plug the thinness of the interior DL but they haven’t asked those players if they want some more game time on defense (Jimmons played DL and is like 320 lbs., Maximus Gibbs should practice on the DL squad, and Andres Dewerk (sp?) is a big body guy).
