Are People Keeping Colorado Victory In Perspective? No

I didn’t think too much would be made from the Colorado victory. I was wrong.

I see phrases like “step in a better direction” and “peak performance” in media reports.

Look, USC played a bad team and all that really matters is who is the next coach. The end.

When is someone going to write that USC really hasn’t played a good team yet?

  • USC is 4-point favorite over Utah per BetOnline.
  • Bowl guru Jerry Palm has USC playing Fresno State in the Los Angeles aka Jimmy Kimmel Bowl. Talk about an underwhelming game. Fresno just lost to Hawaii.

    1. Stupid? Any win over a Karl Dorrell coached team should be be savored. They are hard to come by (well, in the sense you have to wait until the following Saturday). But let’s look at this for what it is: a sign that USC hasn’t completely self destructed –which some were predicting. An indicator that we’re at least gonna beat the bottom feeders — Cal and Arizona. And, if we keep getting better, we have a shot at one very nice upset before 2021 is over….

        As intellectually-dishonest as it is to use hyperbole to describe a win over a lackluster team, it is equally dishonest to find nothing positive in a convincing win over a lackluster team.

I have only seen colorado play once prior to sc…A&M,which was highly ranked aka over ranked now. sc sure dominated colorado,A&M did not,but if sc played A&M I would think sc would lose. sc is a long way from total destruction,but a longer way from top 10. The material is there,but the coaches are not. Fortunately for sc Utah lost its only decent q/b, so they should lose. I did not see ucla game ,but I have mentioned ASU as the team to beat since Utah has no q/b to make them challenge for top of Pac 12 south.SC has to beat those teams, ucla and Ariz St…anything is possible,just not probable…Dart is the answer if he recovers fully,although I did see slovis run for his life a couple times,and he should’cause he looked speedy enough to make a difference.

MG-Wasn’t meaningless – only game UCLA has won that had meaning since Vermeil’s last (unfortunately)…and for those that don’t remember…Dorrell has made a ton of money off of that one day in the sun, courtesy largely of a left tackle who couldn’t win a one-on-one and a failure of Kiffin to adjust play-calling…which he corrected in the Rose Bowl win over Michigan…and JDBooty having one of those days…wasn’t a team comparable to 2003-05 or 2008, but definitely a blown national championship (then Ohio State was a big-game punching bag).

      7. Mostly agree, James. But it’s not like it was a championship game or anything. I do recall being impressed with Dorrell’s confidence that his not-very-great Bruin team was gonna take USC. He made his players believe in themselves. For that he is to be commended.
        [Check out the game 13-9 game— Booty got blitzed early…. he took a few BIG hits…. and he wasn’t too keen on playing football after that]…..

        It was mostly a combination of Kiffin not adjusting to UCLA’s blitz-on-every-down strategy (which made the Rose Bowl win over Michigan that much more frustrating, because they copied UCLA’s script, but then the play-calling was adjusted at the half), a left tackle who couldn’t win one-on-one (and they never adjusted to provide help from a tight end or back), and Booty being what he was (not Leinart, but then again, as ’67 pointed out here, that maybe just reflected the difference in coaching between Chow and Kiffin). Very frustrating, especially since the aces in hole (Bush and White) from crises then recently past were gone (remember that was the year where it was tailback of the week), we were gifted a second chance after the ordained debacle in Corvallis, and the chance to remove the bad taste from the year before was at hand with a rummy Buckeye opponent in the offing.

      No big loss for USC, that small town country boy clown Luke Fickell wouldn’t be able to handle Los Angeles.

  2. This was another boring game. How much excitement is generated in a game played against a bad team? The only question was if we would play to their level and potentially lose the game. However, I was able to watch good games playing at the same time in ND vs Cincinnati and Oregon vs Stanford that made the afternoon enjoyable.

    1. I had picked them to win pac12 south or Ariz St…He just can’t seem to get a q/b, kinda’ like coach’O’ who is not developing q/b’s at LSU. That is ‘the key’ position for the offense, then comes the “‘O’ line. Utah has very good linemen…so we will see,but I pick sc ’cause of q/b’s…sc has better ones.

  5. This win was surprising in two ways. SC hasn’t completely tanked it after getting drubbed by average OSU. And Colorado is beyond awful. Who the hell decided to hire Karl Dorrell lol !
    Utah ? they did a nice job of keeping Gomer around. Will probably give this Williams guy more false hope too.

    Let’s just get to December and get a real coach for once !

  7. Nothing that happens this season matters. Nothing. And it’s exactly why it was so stupid to start the season with Helton still there. When they brought him back they punted the season. Like, if you know you’re going to break up with someone you don’t keep seeing them. You do it. If you don’t you’re just wasting everyone’s time.

  11. USC hasn’t really played a good team yet! There I wrote it. So it is written, so it shall be.
    Actually teams usually put up a good fight against USC. Beating USC is a badge of honor. Somewhere at Fresno State there’s a plot of grass from the Larry Smith era, and a bowl game victory in Anaheim. USC felt disrespected, but Fresno came to play. My point being USC has to be USC or they get beat by a team that wants it more.
    Discipline and communication breakdowns didn’t hurt us against Colorado, but there is no way we can continue to win without better team effort.

    1. I was there in Anaheim in the pouring down rain watching Fresno-neck state hand it to USC that game 24-7. All American Willie McGinnis DE was non existent most of the game. Going against Jessie Hardwick who came out of a small school in Garden Grove CA. Bolsa Grande High school my alma mater.

    2. USC will be in the playoffs every year with the #1 recruiting class every year once we have the right head coach.

      USC needs to go big. Go independent. Strike a separate TV deal and try to earn real money by playing Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas every year. Schedule the biggest games in the country nearly every week.

      Create a juggernaut with a head coach to match.

    1. When you said “let’s be FAIR”, I thought you were headed in this direction: Dorrell kept his team together throughout a very tough season. In the game against USC, the Bruins played way over their heads —surviving crushing tackles by USC’s great linebackers …and blocking and then intercepting what could have been the winning pass by Booty. You threw me by going in the “rotten egg”, “Wipeout” direction.

      1. The infamous 2006 UCLA game … another dandy job by the boy blunders Goat Kiffin and Suckisian. Miserable play calling, per usual, all game long left the gutties in the game. Capped off by that embarrassing no chance pick at the end. Pete really screwed the pooch letting those two idiots ruin title teams from 2005-2008. Just idiots.
        The Boy Blunders:
        1. Texas Rose Bowl 1st half. What should had been a repeat of the Okie 55-19 massacre. Kiffin’s crap play calling and lack of control put SC down at half. Of course, the final series leaving one of the greatest players ever on the bench was a great coaching.
        2. Oregon St. 2008. Pete’s most talented team screwed up by Suck not being smart enough to get a 1st down in the 1st half vs a team that gave up 65 pts vs Oregon.
        3. Stanford 2007. Suckisian strikes again.
        4. UCLA 2006. See above.
        5. Notre Dame/Arizona St./Fresno St. 2005. Thank god for overwhelming talent and the greatest of Reggie Bush. Only stupid Kiffin could stop the USC offense and he tried in these games until the talent overcame the idiot.

      2. JDB – one guy whom Pete never got up to his potential. Maybe if Norm had still been there it would be different. But the little gutties played a great game, no doubt. Dorrell might be the best coach they have had since Toledo.

      3. Suck — Texas was an impressive opponent. They had a better defense than we did that year (which had zero amount to do with Kiff).
        And try not to make arguments that are internally inconsistent (Pete “screwed the pooch” by allowing a “no chance interception”).

  14. Speaking of laying an egg……UCLA blew a great chance again Saturday night. If Chip does not beat Oregon in two weeks rumor has it they have Clay Helton on their list to interview, and Clay will come real cheap, and get the Bruins to the Las Vegas Bowl each season which is quite acceptable for Bruin fans lately. The USC program is definitely down until the new coach arrives, and UCLA needed to capitalize while the USC program has been down the last couple of years, and they are not doing that under Chip. I think they gave up on Jim Mora a bit too early.

    Defense wins championship- neither SC or UCLA have much of a defense right now. Arizona State is the team to beat in the Pac 12 South as it stands right now. For some reason maybe I am getting too optimistic as I see USC improving but I think all of us will get a better read on things after the Utah game. Remember USC has a very young team this year with little coaching. UCLA is a veteran team this year, and if they can’t get it done now they certainly won’t next year with or without Chip.

  15. USC should interview Kirk Ferentz the Iowa Head Football Coach. Strong defensive coach, and his team overachieves every year in the Tough Big 10 Conference without being able to recruit superior talent. Great head coach/leader, but would need a strong offensive coordinator/asst head coach at USC to make it work. No question he teaches physical play , and winning games starts with dominant offensive and defensive line play..

  16. Just wanted to get the people on this blog, who are interested in the turnaround of this program, take on who is both a good and getable candidate for proper leadership. I will give you my thoughts. Let’s assume that Meyer, and Stoops are not in the picture (which they most likely are not). Let’s also assume Peterson will not return to coaching. If Fickell and Campbell pass on the job, what are peoples opinion? Personally, though he turned around Vandy, and continued the work O’brien started at PSU, I have issues with Franklin’s in game decisions as well as his game and clock management moves. They have lost too many games that should have been done deals. Has anyone ever considered taking a look at Marvin Lewis. One of the greatest defensive coordinators in NFL history, a successful NFL head coach for 16 years turning around one of them most woeful franchises in history. LA roots, tough as nails, old school yet still respected with his NFL ties. Seems to be taking to the college game like a fish to water. Most importantly, a hard nose disciplinarian that doesn’t take shit from the kids yet the kids love him because of it. A little grumpy at times but who the hell cares, as long as we don’t see all these discipline problems horrendous tackling and dudes making idiots of them selves for making common plays. What do y’all think?

      1. Checked Franklin’s record at Penn State – 3 really good seasons, perhaps a fourth on the way, out of 8, one ok season (9-4), the others were 7-6, 7-6, and 4-5. So that worries me a bit. I am on the Fickell bandwagon after watching them crush the domers. I love to see the fake leprechaun sitting on his ass, looking dejected.

      2. Definitely not enthusiastic about Franklin (and wasn’t the last time people talked him up around Swann’s spontaneous combustion/extension at the Rose Bowl). Definitely agree about the Leper-con (I have such wonderful memories of certain games like that when it was us rendering the punishment – especially 1979 and 2003, although 2007 was satisfying with Sanchez enjoying a debut of sorts).

    2. For my two cents, I do think high level coordinators should be considered if we can’t hire an excellent incumbent HC. At the college level, the HC still needs to be part of the recruiting team, particularly for the offense as Donte is DBs.

    1. I don’t want to impugn “millennials” because there are many more hard working and highly-achieving individuals of the younger generation than folks who have caused the term “millennial” to become almost derogatory.

      Still, my first thought was that there is a significant segment of the millennial generation who is in for a very rude awakening when they learn that after college life becomes very brutally fair. Fair in the true objective definition of the word and not in a socially malleable interpretation.

  20. For me, every win will be horrible. I am sick and tired of seeing less than great performances on the field. I might be wrong, but I compare every game to great teams that I remember and I don’t see any greatness in this team.

    When this team can beat the bama’s ohio st.’, oklahoma’s, then you have a great team. To say beating colorado is a great win is ludicrous.

I was concerned about Fickell before Saturday because his record against ranked opponents was something like 1-5, but after seeing how they manhandled the domers, he seems to be a really good choice off that list. He is getting a ton out of the amount of talent that he has on that team. They are very disciplined – only 20 penalty yards during the domer game. I could see USC being back at the top with him.

Like many others, I’m guilty of the HR-like thintelligent thinking (I want proven perfection!)…so wanted the Urban hire (and unfortunately, we had and passed on that chance of a lifetime), and now want an Urban-like hire…I still think O’Brien is by far the best of the names I’ve heard bandied about…and I think of Fickell’s uninspiring year at the helm in Columbus…but, that happens, and maybe he would be perfect…but those prior ties to Bohn…just hard to get super enthusiastic about it until after-the-fact I guess…

      1. James, O’Brien is an intriguing name. He had some good years in the NFL as HC. I hear you about Fickell’s one year at OSU. That also concerned me, though it was 10 years ago, so I am thinking that may be a one-off. I look at his current bottom line and think he is doing really well – a 6th ranked Cincy team, the kids play their hearts out for him, he id young enough to have the energy needed, enough experience to get things done, and it is clear the kids respect him and are highly disciplined. But O’Brien looks really good as well. A good problem to have…

    2. I checked his roster ….hoping to see a bunch of seniors —so that maybe he’d be thinking now is a good time to make the change —but he has a fairly young team — and that may contribute to him wanting to stay where he is…

Agree entirely and why I made the point of me being guilty of wanting the perfect hire…one year, particularly first year, occurring in those circumstances…as many have mused about Kiffin (with various degrees of credibility), it might have just been wrong time, place…the job he’s done at Cincy, particularly with last weekend fresh in mind, suggests he presents the best chance of making a great hire of a great coach on the rise…I like O’Brien because of track record, characteristics, affiliations…and believe that is the best treatment for what ails us…but I would be perfectly happy with Fickell…definitely worth rolling the dice (same would go for the BYU coach).

    4. The Domers suck– we’ll likely beat them this year. People are looking at names, not teams– ND squeaked by in overtime vs Florida St and people were not looking at the fact Florida State is worse than Florida Agriculture and Mechanical this year. That’s what ND is playing like this year too. And they think Cincy is a small Catholic school with little talent when it had a 85 talent rating, which is a top 25 type talent rating, and are probably better than that– Fickell from his days with Sweater Vest and HS coaching relationships basically gets a lot of tOSU recruits that don’t pan out with grades, etc. without those kids doing the camp route. Cincy can easily win vs a sht ND and then bully a bunch of crap teams with so-so coaching. He’s not going to get away with any of that at USC just like he didn’t get away with it even at tOSU inheriting a team that went undefeated the prior year and stocked with talent.

      People gotta start focusing on what we need and what coaches are doing. Really, we would do best if we could just bring the entire Oregon State coaching staff, but I think that’s a tough pull– a lot of the staff seems to locked into being there and what they’re doing. But if not, we’d immediately be where we want to be as a program. It’s the type of football they’re playing and their experience and strengths that fits with a top level program.

      3. Bitch Punk (or as most refer to him, “Glasses) is emblematic of 12 officiating. Every time I see USC flagged for the EXACT same thing the other team is getting away with (usually holding), I’m reminded of Lou Holtz’s remark to the refs when he was getting screwed over while coaching a game for South Carolina: “I hope you guys are getting half a paycheck —you’re only paying attention to one team.”
