USC Morning Buzz: Get Ready For Return Of Jaxson Dart

It sure looks like Jaxson Dart is being readied for a possible role in the Notre Dame game.

Dart did more Tuesday and by next week I can see him getting enough practice time to be available for the Notre Dame game.

Kedon Slovis will start but if he struggles, Dart could get his chance.

Donte Williams has nothing to lose.

  • USC was picked to finish third in the Pac-12 basketball preseason poll.
  • Isaiah Mobley was a first-team All-Pac-12 pick while Boogie Ellis made the second team.
  • A reader complained that he doesn’t like it when players sport the half-jersey look. What do you think?

    1. USC needs the spark that Dart showed when he played. However, since our season is lost, I’d rather he remain healing and be completely ready for 2022 than risk a more serious injury because he started too early. I remain hopeful, but terrified inside because of the selection committee, that USC will find a proven, professional winning head coach. We haven’t had one for nearly a decade. Jim Mora was interviewed on Pac12 Sports and he gave a grave assessment of SC and its 2021 future. Although he coached our rival, I think he was spot on. Like Wilner he called out the lack of discipline and weakness of the team.

      1. Dart should sit.
This season is lost, with a 7-5 record likely the best we may hope for.
If anyone has Dart’s parent’s phone #, I’ll call them to advise.

      2. Couldn’t agree more on the advisability of keeping Dart off the field. Yes, he COULD beat Notre Dame. But he also COULD get injured in a meaningless (most meaningless EVER ) season. Do we also have all star backs up tackles we can send in to protect him?
There is something to be said about protecting Dart as a way of enticing fence -sitting coaches to consider USC as their next landing place. An injured Dart gets transformed into an injured coaching search.
I hope Donte isn’t so invested in proving he can win a big game that he takes this risk.

      3. Having a red-shirt year may not matter to Dart
(recall that Sammy D left USC as a rsSoph),
but allowing the fella to red-shirt this lost season
        is a wise move.

We know Donte wants to win as many games as feasible during this tenure,
but putting the kid out “too soon” does not show coaching maturity.
Slovis is still one of the top 10-20 QB’s in the country.
        The problem is in
        1. the WR (not named London) getting open reliably
        2. and the OC not having a playbook or game calling skill to get the TE/RB’s involved.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. I disagree that Dart should not play this year. He has already proven he can sling the ball around to multiple players. I think the players not named London will try harder with Dart as the QB.

Only problem is whether he takes too many hits. The offensive line isnt good, but in pass protection they are not utterly horrible. Slovis is holding the ball too long and any o-line will break down when the ball doesnt come out fast enough. As long as Dart is fully healthy, he is mobile. I would just tell him to not worry about getting extra yards and take a slide or get out of bounds when he runs.

This season isnt about our record, it is about getting rid of Helton (done) and trying to get the players moving in the right direction. A good finish to the season with Dart could give the team some much needed hope for the future, and it might make recruits take a second look at USC with a new head coach and a hot QB for next year.

Anyone who expected this year to turn around as soon as Helton left doesnt understand football. The two coordinators are the problem with the team and they are still mucking things up.

      5. I think the O. C. is the largest part of the problem —and the subset of that problem is the O-Line coach….

Andyain’twinning’s best player, Evan Mobley has been exiled to Cleveland and his brother Isaiah, although a pre-season 1st team all-Pac-12 pick, was virtually non-existent last year even when in a game.

I’m not sure what the Booger and his daddy will bring to SUCC’s game that will improve on the 2020-21 team’s performance led by EM and his daddy. The Booger and his daddy is hardly a future #1 Draft NBA draft choice.

    2. According to source Jaxson Dart was in the Lloyds of London office getting a policy when he gets injured. Coach Donte was there to provide moral support. Jaxon Dart told his usc issued girlfriend, Brittany Anne at Grinders that she is looking at a millionaire when he collects on his insurance after the Norte Dame game. Also Jaxson is looking forward to a lucrative career as a high school football coach in Utah. Brittany Anne was not sure if she wanted to follow Jaxson to Utah.

  2. Jon Wilner comment about #7 in Pac12, the Trojans….

    7. USC (3-3/2-3)
    Last week: 6
    Result: Lost to Utah 42-26
    Next up: Idle
    Line: N/A
Comment: The defense is bad, the offense is worse and Jaxson Dart needs to play as soon as he’s healthy. But at the root of all these embarrassing losses is the lack of discipline, accountability and toughness — both mental and physical — that festered for years under Clay Helton.

Do caruso, folt and bohn see this type of embarrassing truthful comment from well-known Pac12 sports authorities……do they care? They allowed two more years of weak, incompetent, destructive “coaching” to taint and nearly destroy the traditions and heritage and future of a blue blood program. Now it’s the joke of the NCAA. If we don’t get a top coach, SC may go the way of Duke and SMU.

    1. Duke was never a FB power.
SMU had a few decent years in the 80’s–ostensibly due to the Pony Express and the cash payouts solely. SMU never a FB power.

      1. Ponies were 21-1-1 (with one of the most boring 7-3 Cotton Bowl victories – even if over Marino-led Pitt – I ever wasted 3 hours watching!) with the cash flowing (a couple of decent seasons with Express Light after that, but along with the rest of the soon-to-be-extinct and always-the-most-corrupt SWC, scandal-ridden, and alone among them, death penalty bound). But you are right on the button: not a natural program, like Texas, A&M, or Houston (same goes for Baylor, TCU, Rice…Tech is halfway between the two groups?)…

If I was Dart…and think anyone who believes he can be a productive member of the program in the future must concur…I would be seriously working on a limp (considering the proclivities of posters on this site, I rephrase in advance as “working on the appearance of favoring some indeterminate location in one leg resulting in an unnatural gait) leading up to what does not promise to be a happy shamrock sundae meal Saturday in South Bend…

  4. Oklahoma is going through the same issue with Spencer Rattler, he was a projected # 1 draft pick, just as Keadon Slovis was. But you have to play the best player no matter what the circumstances are. So if Slovis, and Rattler have confidence in their skills, then they can enter the transfer protocol, and move on to the NFL through a different University.

  5. clarification……..I agree with Bill Baldwin. I don’t want Dart to play. However, I’d love to see Moss given a chance. I read many positive reports about his practices.

    Liked by 3 people

    1. Yep. If Slovis struggles, try to jumpstart things without destroying Dart in the process. Go with Moss.
Up until yesterday I wanted Dart in against Notre Dame (they deserve it). But then I started thinking about a couple of possibilities —(1) Dart getting hurt in a completely meaningless season (2) USC becoming EVEN less attractive to potential First Magnitude coaches.

      2. “Accountability happens” (as it has been absent for the entirety of former HC’s tenure)

  6. Dart is another Sam Darnold for USC. The game Dart played in reminded me of when Max Brown was replaced by Sam Darnold…immediate injection of spirited play. For whatever reason Slovis has lost that magic and the whole team pretty much has lost their fight to win. So far this year the only game I would be interested in seeing again was the game Jaxson Dart won.

    1. Slovis is doing fine. Watch the tape. Most of the WR don’t have the speed nor moves to get open. It’s on the WR’s and likely the TE’s also.

Losing Pittman, Vaughns, and ARSB in less than 2 seasons is an epic loss for the program. Colbert needs to get these WR’s ballin’.

      1. Slovis is doing (more or less) fine as a thrower —but there’s more to quarterbacking than that. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve watched him stand there when the middle of the field has opened up for a 7 yard run…. or the number of times, usually in goal to go situations, he could have pulled the safety toward him and off a receiver by sliding 3 or 4 steps to the right before he throws right. But he just STANDS there.

  7. Donte Williams is willing to ruin Jaxson Dart’s career, knowing USC’s offensive line is shit, the kid has already been hurt, coming off surgery, but Donte figures he has a better chance at keeping the game vs the Irish close instead of getting blown out wirh that girl Slovis.

Donte has shown he doesn’t have the balls to make real head coach decisions by letting that idiot Graham Harrell continue to run that shit offense that’s going to get Drake London killed and now he’s going to feed Dart to the wolves thinking his shit performance as an interim head coach won’t look so bad if he doesn’t get blown out again.

Donte is only looking out for himself, his ass is fired after the season, this season for the Trojans is shot to hell already, let the kid completely heal.

  8. What school is going to want Donte knowing he doesn’t give a shit about the players health? Let alone the fact his coaching sucks and his DB’s can’t tackle and are constantly getting burned.

And don’t give me this shit that he’s a great recruiter, that’s horse shit, USC recruits itself even with the likes of dumbasses like himself and Clay Helton wasting everyone’s time.

  9. Scooter,

I wish players would wear the uniform the way it was intended to be, the shirt is tucked in, knee pads at the knee and not above, black shoes and white socks. That is the classic look for SC football. But that is my opinion.

    Liked by 3 people

    1. You’re not alone (but like you, that’s my opinion, because it’s in my mind’s eye)…for that matter, as much as I love our helmet decal, would prefer for it to be shrunk back to its former size, rather than KiffySark’d into McGumbo size (same goes for UCLA uniforms and helmets – they looked better before the changes…some grumpy old man? maybe…but really just a matter of class and taste and not needing to supersize everything).

    1. A nice analysis, Mr Smith, but for the fact that the o-line is not up to the task of blocking VS a real FB team like ND.

No, taking the kid into South Bend with a suspect O-line in a hostile stadium would cause more damage. One of Dart’s best skills is scrambling and running. While some might think he’s ready to scramble, give him until Spring Ball. He is gonna be a wonderful QB for us…in 2022.

Wouldn’t it be great to see Kedon at UCLA or ND next year. Behind those OLs, he will actually be decent and move his stock up the 2023 draft board.

USC BB 3rd in the preseason poll. Wow, they were picked 6th in last years preseason poll even though they had Evan at center. This is huge news!!

  12. We have little or no chance in beating Notre Dame. Let Slovis play, and if he gets hurt let Miller Moss get some reps. Play him 1 more additional game perhaps the Arizona game if that is possible so he does not blow his redshirt year.

Slovis will probably transfer once his boy Graham Harrell is let go. To me he is not ready for the NFL, and I am not sure he will every play in the league.

    1. We have seen JT Daniels do better at another team, why not Slovis?

The core problem is the idiotic air raid offense. Keep practicing the same 8 plays until the team is perfect is not a winning strategy.

  13. Memo to: MG

Tomorrow night’s Dodgers Vs Giants should be epic. Both teams have their best pitchers on the mound.

MG, if you recall the first game of the series the Dodgers lost 4 – 0, the players were swinging at Webb’s first pitches, which were usually in the dirt or way out of the strike zone. If the Dodgers wait on Logan Webb to throw strikes to avoid walks, the Dodgers win.

Some baseball pundits have mentioned the Giants have trouble with southpaw pitching. Since J. Urias is the D’s starter that may or may not be a factor in the D’s favor.

I’m going with my heart here, in spite of Dave Roberts, the Dodgers will win the rubber game.

Helton was terrible, but bringing in fired coaches as if they could fix things, was just stupid. Bohn brought in Orlando (fired by Texas)and Swann brought in Kingsbury/Harrell (Fired by some high school.)
