Discuss The USC-Arizona Game

What an appalling performance.

USC let a team that has lost 19 straight games amass 466 yards in offense with its No. 3 QB.

Todd Orlando, Craig Naivar (safeties) and Donte Williams (corners) have done a terrible job with the defense. Can you imagine if USC played in a real conference?

A 7-point victory is embarrassing. No other way to say it.

The rotation of the quarterbacks was poor, to say the least. Jaxson Dart gets in a rhythm and then has to sit in the third quarter while Kedon Slovis throws a pick six.

It’s astounding how many bad decisions are made.

Here is the biggest joke: USC announced the official attendance as 52,435. That is a massive inflation.

      4. It must be really painful for UCLA. Boatload of players returning with lots of experience.
        Everything lined up for them. But they crash and burn. UCLA football is doomed to walk the earth as a second rate team. A universal law—bruins—no matter the circumstances—will always return to their natural state of ineptitude.

  3. Just when you think we hit bottom, we find out that bedrock is many feet below.

    Drake’s ankle hopefully recovers fully, but what are the chances he is back in a Trojan uni?

    New coach will bring all new assistants. A total redo.

    Lynn Swann, 2018: ““We acknowledge and understand our deficiencies in areas that include culture, discipline, schemes, personnel and staff,” he wrote. “We agree that changes need to be made … Coach Helton has a plan in place to get USC back to the top.”

    And now we have Carol Folt…WTF… 12 years of this crap.

  5. If the ‘cats didn’t give up 130 penalty yards, the outcome may have been different. Abstracting from changes in the game and rules, this team might be worse than the 2000 Tollner team. And this team has more talent on the field.

Donte won’t say this (he’ll say going to the run was a smart way of closing out the game) but once London was out he didn’t want to throw because he knows Dart hasn’t established his timing with any of the other receivers on their routes. Our QB’s actually lack chemistry with the entire receiving corps other than Drake London. That’s some coaching.

        I think the 2000 team was the worst. The 1983 team had some defensive talent, but the offensive side was bereft of talent.

        Intriguingly, it took about 9 months to turn the program around.
        By October, the new HC had the Trojans on a win streak, including W’s vs UCLA and ND.

    3. USC did everything they could to lose the game. They put a quarterback back into the game so he could give Zona six points. They allowed enough chances to get into the game to make Helton look like genius. They wasted opportunities by committing penalties that should be basic football knowledge as not to be done.
      All along I have thought Donte was trying to improve things, but he has proven me wrong. I now think he is using Helton logic to keep his job. Because Helton was rewarded for his mediocrity, Donte has upped his average coaching to a level well above Helton’s best mediocre level. And don’t be fooled the coordinators are competing to see who is more mediocre.
      That we won this game was not a prize to their thinking.

Slick Jimmie Franklin is 5-3, and you can see the P.O.’d look on his face, seeing tens of millions of dollars vanish before his eyes, and being stuck in Happy Valley. lol Ohio State doesn’t look so hot but I’m surprised how much disrespect the Oregon Ducks are getting since they beat them head to head. Mel Tucker took a big step to showing he is going to be the next guy getting money thrown at him, and perhaps bringing him back to the PAC 12. I’ve said I don’t blame him for Colorado’s mediocrity– he went 5-7 in his only seasons in 2019 I think, just like McIntyre did, but 2018 ended in 7 straight losses. Tucker started strong but ran into the wall of a lack of depth, injury and not enough talent. Still games to be played, though a few recent games shouldn’t be the entire criteria.

    2. True on Tucker at CU–I was relieved to see him leave ASAP. He was coaching MacIntyre’s recruits and did a pretty good job with them.
      The Trojans came into Boulder (with Helton at the helm) and escaped with a last second W. Had Tucker remained, USC ‘s streak vs the Buffs would have ended in 2020 or 2021. Thank goodness for nice guy Dorrell at CU.

      However, I think Tucker has a long-term home in the B1G. MSU–after a near decade of controversy and serving penalty–is on the rise and likely willing to pay Mel a ton. They have a great fan base.

      Reality has come to Penn State and the fighting Franklins.
      He is still a step up from anything we’ve had at USC for a decade.

      1. Mel Tucker’s quick exit from Colorado I think shows that he’s willing to get out of town for an opportunity.

        Also, Tucker not only independently realizes that his path to win a college NC is better in USC by far, but as a protegee of Saban he realizes that’s the path.

        But let’s talk about that path at MSU for a second. Sure he beat Mich but everyone beats Harbaugh in big games, because Harbaugh needs a sports psychologist. Recall when he was at Stanford he said he breaks up the play calling by downs between him, Shaw, and Roman., saying he was more of gambler, Shaw was more conservative and Roman was somewhere in between. If you look at Harbaugh, in big games he becomes a gambler, especially once he’s close or up, and throws out all the stuff that was successful. All the running and big tight ends and play action goes out the window and he outsmarts and out-risks himself.

        So Mel still has to deal with a talented if obvs overhyped Franklin’s Penn State and a less than invincible but still tough Ohio State.

        MSU is always going to have an uphill fight, and Ohio St and Mich won’t accept MSU as the conference power, while he’ll also run into some big boy fb vs Wisconsin or other B1G West teams.

        So MSU to ‘SC is a Saban move and thus a Tucker move. But is Tucker a Saban in the making??? Hm

        Oh, and as crazy as it is to recall, pre Harrell Helton > James Franklin on the field. I suspect we just ducked Helton II without the hugs.

      Utah 44, U Clowns Lose Again 24. U are such a loser, like your Clown school. Not only did your Clown school give up more points to Utah than USC 44 to 42, but you did not score as many either, 24 to 26 compared to USC.

      I don’t know what is worse, a Clown school that has an established coach or SC’s coaching staff. I like how they cover up half the Rose Bowl with the spelling of UGLY sheets at the Rose Bowl. the reason for that is is because of all of the bird droppings. The Clowns won’t have to clean the seats, all they have to do is wash the sheets. Your beer sales have not done anything to draw the drunken lushes of Clown school.

      BTW, USC won and U Clowns Lose Again. Chumps and cheaters are built there.

      1. TRUE , UCLA has reverted to not so good again…but vs this sc team I see a bruin win…unless the start Dart catches on with staff of still hellton mired coaches, gets with it. If he is capable and isn’t afraid to run he makes a huge difference,just like Bruin q/b.

You’ve crushed the spirit of the players and you’ve crushed the spirit of the fans. Quit lying about the game attendance. Anybody can see there wasn’t more than 40K at Saturday’s game.

        PC took 9.5 months to rebuild USC into a reliable winner–and he did it with some transfer talent (Huggy-bear’s son, Fargas) and with the players Hackett had recruited. PC opened up brutal, but beat ND and UCLA down the stretch.

        I think the top 2-3 on our list can perform similarly if Bohn can sign them. I don’t think Fickell will be coming.

Don’t expect SC to beat Arizona State at Arizona State after ASU loses an embarrasing game to WSU and especially against a team that they thought that they should have won last year(without that miracle) and have been waiting to face SC for a year. I would say SC’s chances to win game #5 next week are very poor.

What a clown show.The defense just getting gashed repeatedly and I still can’t believe how rapidly the O line backs up and gives ground on pass protection.By the time our statuary QB sets his feet (because he doesn’t roll out) the defense is in his jersey.The linemen never fire out and slow the defender. That # 60 on our defense looks like a water bed without a frame.He can barely move.If he had to make a tackle, could he? But the most insufferable aspect of the game is the DJ -way to emasculate the iconic Trojan marching band – destroying a long held tradtion.Watching from home, I just turn off the sound.Next, Bohn will have clowns twisting balloons into animals for the kids and a petting zoo in the end zone.We have P.T. Barnum for an AD. Gimmickry is a sign of desperation, Big Mike. The piped in music is for fans that didn’t come to watch the game.Be on the look out for beach balls being batted about during games – it’s coming – nothing else to see anyway.

  19. Fresh from Heritage Hall. The list of USC Head Coaching Candidates has been trimmed to the list below: 1. Luke Fickell. Cincinnati. 2.Dave Aranda. Baylor. 3.James Franklin. Penn State. 4.Dave Clawson. Wake Forest. My sources tell me that Aranda, Franklin and Clawson would all jump at the opportunity to coach at one of the Top 3 Blue Blood programs in College Football History. Fickell is also interested but is weighing the impact of a move to Los Angeles on his family and may be willing to wait for the Penn State, Ohio State or Michigan to open up. Remember, he already turned down the Michigan State job two years ago. He has told associates that staying in the mid west would have less of an impact on his family. However, he is strongly considering rejoining Bohn in Los Angeles. Before you comment negatively on Franklin, he is still a strong candidate because everyone knows that Penn State was one of the best teams in the Country until the QB was injured against Iowa. PSU was undefeated and man handling Iowa until the injury and has not been the same since.

    1. Trojan 5, Is this your wish list or do you have some inside info at HH? I like 1 & 2 in your list. Fickell is probably not leaving the Midwest, but I think he would have SC back within 10-12 games. Aranda is from the IE and would probably jump at the chance to return home and have SC back in the middle is season 2. The shine is off on Franklin after his 3rd loss this season. Although an upgrade to the Village Idiot (who BTW after the Stanford loss, said to judge the team in December not in September – well we are in October and the whole world can see that you ruined a once proud program), he is just an above average coach. Don’t know enough about Clawson – Wake Forrest to have an opinion. I just want a proven great coach. No more immature divas, no more drunks, no more Village Idiots.

      If you were the hot property in Coaching making a ton of money in a place where “your dollar goes far”, a devout Catholic in Ohio with 6 or so kids, with a job opening at ND soon, wouldn’t you just sit tight and wait for ND to call? My advice to Fickell? Don’t even think about coming to California or USC with it’s fickle and disloyal fans.

      I have not looked closely at Dave Clawson. I must ask, is he an Andy Enfield?

  22. Everyone jumps on a coach who is having 1 great season like Jonathan Smith at Oregon State.. I noticed no one is mentioning him as a USC Football Candidate any longer after Oregon State lost to Cal on Saturday.

    If your going to even consider a football coach form the Pac 12 which is crazy the only coach that should be considered is Kyle Whitingham at Utah who puts together good, consistent football team year after year.

    1. Kyle–a smart/tough Mormon–is not leaving Salt Lake City to coach in the hell-hole that is LA. He coaches tough football–which has not been played in LA in 10+ years. He skis and drives his Harley like a demon. Can’t do that anywhere near LA. Makes plenty of money and has a loyal and proud following. Rice Eccles stadium is a great venue for the people of Utah, who support their school.

      He has no trouble recruiting So Cal talent to fill up his roster.

      Not on the list, cuz he is not leaving.

    we might be able to run the ball, which will come in handy in November. Let’s get In Ingraham a 1000 yards. He earned it. On this site, there has been incredible angst over the lack of a power run game. Having a 1000 yard rusher helps when recruiting RB’s in the future.
    (Yeah, having Christon would be nice. Likely not in FB shape even if some miracle happens and he is reinstated.)

    Drake L likely has a severe sprain of the medial malleoulus of the right ankle and is out for at least a month. Hopefully there is no associated fracture. Feel sorry for him, as he was putting in a really special year. We can praise him once the announcement is made. Looks like Slovis and Dart are gonna have to develop and throw to the other talent.

    Defense: only bad news. Absolutely no signs of life.

    Discipline: in a classic Mike Mothershead called game, the 15 yard unnecessary roughness calls and PI calls decided the game. I think USC is near the bottom of CFB again with penalties per game. No improvement.

    Crowd: looks like Bohn’s program has hit rock bottom.

      In any “company” that cared about success, Bohn would have been fired on the same day as Helton.
      Without Drake, the “jump ball” offense disappears. USC is gonna have to rely on receivers running their routes precisely (something they are not doing now) and QB’s hitting them in stride (something that is only happening 50% of the time presently).
      Is there time to revamp our passing game this week?

    Let’s face facts: USC football is now a bad joke. Atrocious on field play/playcalling and off field coaching. Team is soft, undeveloped, and undisciplined. Season is a total write off, and the *real* attendance figures prove it (some computer-aided AI examination of the overhead view could definitely tell how many unoccupied seats were in the Coliseum – to attest to how *real* USC fans aren’t buying into this $h!tshow…).

    And the sad part here is we cannot trust Bohn to fix anything… we should have real fear in him picking the wrong guy to turn the ship around. Either way, we are 2-3 years minimum from curing these ills after cleaning the coaching staff house, if miraculously the right hire is made. Slightly faster if kicking Bohn and Folt to the curb as part of the deal…

    …saddest part: Drake London was going to win the Billitnikoff Award this year. Thankfully his last reception as a Trojan was a TD…

    1. Drake was the gift that kept giving….until he couldn’t. It’s amazing this selfless player lasted through 8 games. For the first 6 games he was the ENTIRE offense, sacrificing his body to grab balls deliberately thrown high (then we discovered Ingram & spread the workload a bit). If I could see that Drake was an injury waiting to happen why couldn’t the coaching staff? It was up to them to develop their talented receiving corps to the point Drake wasn’t accounting for over 50% of the passing yards each week….

        He was more like a RB on the perimeter than a downfield WR.
        The only guy who would run the short slant over LB country.

  25. Our defense from scheme to personnel is backwards. We have guys who don’t need help to get to the QB, just let them play and no more stupid zone blitzes. Why is Drake covering 30 yards downfield? Also, play the kids! Bullock and Smith deserve to be in there, they make plays. ITS is terrible, he has regressed. Pola Mao isn’t playing much better. Goforth misses a boat load of tackles and is always chasing plays, usually means slow or bad angles. Is Raesjon hurt? Is he just not any good? Play some kids, can’t be worse.

  26. Can’t find any news on Drake…assuming if it was a fracture, they would have announced that. Best case scenario is sprain that doesn’t require surgery, but he would still be many weeks away from being able to run effective routes. His position requires enormous lateral ankle stability and strength. I don’t see how he gets back in time. Prayers up to him, IMHO, he is one of the all-time great receivers to play college football in recent years. As an Arizona analyst said before the game, it is “unfair” to try to play against Drake London. Get well for pro day and the combine, young fella.

      1. I ruptured the PL tendon in my right ankle playing hoops, and tore the PB tendon in half. 8 months before I was playing again. Tons of PT. Recovery was indeed tough.

      3. I think it is so hard to predict. On the one hand, you have Paul George coming back from a gruesome fracture including ligament and tendon reconstruction, and he is playing at an all star level. For Drake’s sake, I hope they find the best surgeon if reconstruction is needed. Remember Grant Hill’s awful journey through 4 or 5 ankle surgeries?

        1967 is correct, however. Those ligaments have been hyper-stretched and won’t “shrink back” much.

Bohn announced today that he’s convinced “USC football will probably be back by 2030 and, believe me, it’ll be worth the wait!!” Some of us fans will be in heaven by then (and some of the present administrators will be… somewhere else) but for those still partaking in the material world it will be so awesome!

    1. I am guessing that Bohn is kicking himself he ever took this job. He could have used the offer to get a raise from Cincy and be the AD of a uni with an undefeated, top 10 team, and be on the fast track for AD jobs at universities that still care about their athletics programs. I have convinced myself that he had no idea what was in store having to deal with Folt…

Until you brought it up, it didn’t occur to me what Bohn’s career would look like if he’d chosen another “time line” (as Kirk would say in James’ favorite television show). I DO blame him for not having his “spider senses” (once I establish a sci -fi theme it’s hard for me to pull out) aroused when he was left alone in a room with Folt. Everything about her, starting with the big Hollywood starlet smile, says “run!.”

  28. The Drake London injury was far more important than winning that game yesterday. I would trade a loss to remove that injury anyday.

    What I wonder is does this mean that London will go to the NFL draft after rehabbing the injury, or does he need to rehab and then come back another year to show that he is fully healed and can be a top draft pick? Another year of London under an excellent coach would be incredible, we can only dream about it.

    So in my dream, we hire Aranda at the end of the regular season, before the early signing day, and then SC goes on a recruiting tear, as Devon Campbell, Josh Connerly, Tetaroia McMillan, Kevin Coleman, Zion Branch, Raleek Brown, Ernest Greene, David Baily, Hero Kanu, Christen Miller, Mykel Williams and a few more that are not even currently known to be interested in USC sign on for the new coaching staff.

    We also pick up Kingsley Suamatei from the transfer portal, along with maybe another 1 or 2 o and d-linemen.

    So our biggest problems in this team are 1) the linebackers 2) the offensive line 3) lack of depth on defensive line 4) defensive secondary and 5) wide receivers just not performing. For the linebackers we will have Julien Simon and Raesjon Davis and if we recruit David Baily and then Solomon Tuliapupu gets well, plus maybe one other linebacker out of the transfer portal. We bring in those 3 top o-line recruits and with Kingsley and maybe one more transfer portal o-lineman, we can effectively have a whole new o-line. The first year might start off a little slow with freshmen playing, but by the second season, we are set. Dart at QB with Devin Brown as backup (Miller will probably transfer out), we need a few more receivers, like T-mac and Kevin Coleman, but generally our receiver corps has good talent that just needs the right plays/routes and coaching, plus the right QB to get in sync with them. The defensive line can get good with Hero and Mykel and Ishmael might be healthy by then, along with Pili coming back from injury. The defensive secondary will have a year 2 Calen Bullock, who is a baller and will be every bit as good as Hufanga, plus we have 5 star Domani Jackson and Ceyair Wright and Prophet Brown, plus some other good talent that can be developed. Then we just need to flip Raleek as a back and maybe pull in someone from the transfer portal.

    I see Aranda being able to have a young, but excellent team in his first year – easily win the Pac-12 South and win the Pac-12, but maybe miss the playoffs in the first year, then go undefeated in second year and be able to play against the top teams in the country by Year 2.

    It all comes down to just having a decent coaching staff. The air raid and these coaches have decimated the team’s talent and morale. Dart will be a great team leader for the turnaround. Devin will be a great back-up QB in case anything happens to Dart. Both of those guys are top QBs and more mobile than Slovis ever was.

    Aranda beating Texas and Sark is a really good sign. Let’s see how he does against Oklahoma, doesnt need to beat them, just a close loss would make him #1 prospect.

    1. Like where you’re headed, gametv —but it may take more than a year for Aranda (or anyone else) to undo the damage that’s been done to these players. Anybody can see they’re used to taking plays off and still seem intent on committing the kind of after- the -play penalties you don’t even see in highschool football.

      After this injury, London must go through the Combine in 2022.
      Might have seen his last game in Cardinal and Gold.

      I’m more interested as to whether Drake J declares for the draft.
      I’d like to see him return.

      You also did not mention Slovis.

      Slovis has done a great job despite lousy QB coaching, lousy play calling, lousy O-line play for all 3 years, and despite Heltonism. I’m not gonna abandon the kid myself. The quality of the WR had declined each year, and now we’re seeing the after-effects.

    Thankfully SC pulled this one out against an 0-17 team. Otherwise you might go for a swim and never come back.

  31. Big Bear-You deserve it – there were signs earlier in the year, and team seems to be getting there…always like seeing Big/Northern Bears doing well…Little/Southern Sisters? Well…depends! Best of luck rest of way and maybe Wilcox will end up making a go of it…
