Discuss The USC-UCLA Debacle

What a disaster.

USC gave up 62 points to UCLA, the most the Bruins scored in the series. USC gave up 609 yards in offense to to UCLA.

The defense was putrid. It provided no rush on the quarterback, which made the secondary even worse. Did Drake Jackson play? I guess only in third-and-long situations.

There was an offensive series where USC had a first-and-goal at the 1-yard line and ended up losing five yards. It was an awful selection of plays.

Can every coach be fired tonight?

It wouldn’t bother me. This season is a disaster. Thank you Mike Bohn for waiting too long to fire Clay Helton.

Is this the worst USC team in memory? You want to say the 1991 team was worse because it went 3-8? That team only got blown out of one game, a 52-30 loss at Cal.

This year’s team has given up at least 40 points in four home losses.

P.S. — USC outrageously announced attendance as 68,152. That would mean less than 10,000 empty seats in Coliseum

      2. I was at the “game,” and the highlight for me was this woman who sat in front of me, a tall, slinky black lady. So the game was not all in vain.

Speaking of the game, did SC forfeit it or something, because all I saw were crazed bruins running around on the field. They do have those cute blue tops, however, so I will give them that.

On the North SC side the fans came, some 30,000. But there was noone on the South side– you know, the side where you can sit on the 50 yard line if you take a second mortgage out on your house. It was 20% full up to halftime when the late-comers filled it to maybe 33%. Must be nice to pay big bucks for choice seats, and then show-off by not showing up–“Darling, it is much too cold to go to the SC-sucla game.”

Anyway, allow me to be serious for a change. It is late in the third quarter, and SC has put together a little rally to pull within 9-points. Go for the almost-automatic 1-point kick and now SC is down 8-points, or one score (potentially). This would have rallied the Trojan defense, “Listen up, listen up, the offense did their job; we’re back in the game, men. Let’s hold up our side of the bargain. Besides I hate Bruins anyway!”

The coach of SC instead goes for 2 and the play fails. Down by 9-points, the offense is internally thinking, “Darn-it-all, we have a nice little rally and we’re still down 2-scores.”

For over 50-years I have gone to SC football games without a ticket, knowing there were plenty of sellers. I would buy the cheapest ticket, and then sneak into the 30-50 yard lines. Had to be alone to do this, because all my friends are sissies.

Well, guess what, SC has put me out of business! No more paper tickets. No more scalping at the games. You now need a computer to get in! And SC already had a low, low attendance problem on their hands.

Bruins never let me down, and yesterday they did not disappoint. A couple of cockish 20ish males of sucla descent, yelled “Nice throw Jackass!” referring to you-know-how. I let it go one time but when he yelled it out a second time, I turned and plaintively told him, “Hey mouth– what a mouth you got.” I figured being a bruin, he might think I was complimenting him on the shape of his mouth. But we didn’t hear from after that.

Luck would have it, I ended up in a bruin section. It wasn’t all bad, it is nice to be around happy people. But I’d like it better if it wasn’t at my expense.

      1. Carra — It’s taken 10 years but I don’t give a shit about USC football anymore….and I never will. The funny thing is –none of the people who destroyed this program and disappointed millions of fans across the country feel one iota of responsibility or the slightest twinge of conscience.
Carol Folt won’t even say “I made a mistake by trying to micromanage Mike Bohn. That’s over. He’s on his own. And I screwed up by not okaying the amount it will take to get our football program on it’s feet again. I promise I’m going to fix that….whatever it takes. I also promise not to treat the new head coach the way I regarded Clay Helton –as my houseboy.”

      2. All the people who destroyed USC football walked away with $$ millions.

In order of culpability (feel free to switch the order around, it will give us something to think about other than the next loss)

Lynn “The Great Contract Extender” Swann “I acknowledge our Deficiencies in schemes, culture, discipline, personnel and staff” (Reason for number 1 – he locked Helton in for years with no competing offer. And when EVERYTHING is deficient, you fire the guy).

Pat “He turned down prime rib for spam” Haden “Clay is a leader of young men and is restoring USC’s brand of physical football. Picking a coach is an inexact science, but there is an exactness with Clay Helton” (Reason for number 2 – he picked the village idiot in the first place – that is an f-up of unique proportions. But I think had Haden stayed on he wouldn’t have extended Helton.)

Carol “Coach Folt” Folt – it seems more and more obvious she blocked Bohn from making a change earlier. How else does one explain Helton getting tarmac’d after the second game? She is a failed university administrator who is in place only because she was a politically correct hire who would do whatever Caruso asked.

Clay (Wizard of OZ) Helton, after losing to Iowa in the Holiday Bowl, 49-25, and having Slovis’s arm forever ruined “I am so proud of these warriors. This team is on the verge of greatness”. He is a grifter. But the number one grifter could have tried to bring in tier one assistants when he was first appointed. But what did we get? Western Kentucky. Lots of Western Kentucky.

Mike “Coach Bohn” Bohn. He should have demanded to have a free hand in dealing with athletic dept personnel based on their performance, and should have demanded that he can hire the right person based on his choice. If he got snookered by Carol, he should have walked away.

        Have it, gents.

      3. 67 — I’m not saying this would fix things but I believe, at the very fucking least, Carol Folt should put out an apology for the state of the football program. The apology should include a pledge to mostly stay out of the A. D.s way from here on out —meaning no more “Urban Meyer will never work here” comments. Sure, she can say “no” to Bohn hiring O. J. as head coach …but when it comes to a universally respected coach (who has previously been hired and has succeeded at top universities) she needs to keep her fucking mouth shut. Let the athletic director do his job and stick to making vapid remarks about the path of righteousness (that nobody takes seriously).

  1. This is the rock bottom that I’d hope we reached sooner rather than later. The reason being is that once you reach that level, you finally realize that you need to make sweeping changes in order to be successful again. Folt/Bohn have been in a state of denial in regards of the football program. They’ve spent the two plus years offering band aid solutions in hopes that it would mask what really ailes the program; a lack of a strong fundamental approach to the game. After today’s monumental ass whooping, it’s time to do what should’ve been done three years ago, start all over with a top to bottom house cleaning. The only question remaining is if Folt/Bohn have the intestinal fortitude to go outside of their comfort zone and hire a top notch head coach who will demand total control of the program.

    1. As far as I’m concern sweeping changes need to be made as you say; Starting with those 2 being gone first Folt and Bohn. They are both way in over their heads in all of this. We don’t need any further proof of that. It’s freaking obvious now.

    2. National TV audience, assuming they tuned in, clearly saw that the Coliseum was mostly empty. SC fans, let alone LA folks, have lost interest in the football team.
In simple terms, this means lost revenue… so are they going to be penny wise and pound foolish or are they going to pay the piper to get the right coach to turn fortunes around both on the field and in the treasury?

    2. A lot of blame to go around..yes, Haden was the dolt who made a series of blunders especially his most fatal one…Helton. Swann had no idea what he was doing, more interested in playing golf and selling his autograph ( of which must now have a market value of zero). But clueless Folt and Bohn still bear a lot of responsibility. If Bohn caved in to Folt when first hired then he was weak, a strong AD would have resigned or not taken the job in the first place if could not make his own pick. If he thought no change was needed, then he was monumentally stupid. Either way, indicates Bohn is not a good AD. His coaching hire will go a long way in determining his legacy…but it is really hard to confidence that he will get it right or have the determination to push hard for the resources needed to get a top coach and staff.

    3. Bohn gets his first HC hire since Fickell at U Cincy.
While I still think Fickell is over-rated (given his results with OSU in his one year), it was a good hire by Bohn.

      If Bohn can bring in…
      1. Aranda (and thus, no mediocrity)
      2. Fickell (not coming)
      3. Campbell–a great choice given the close losses this season while coaching an over-matched team at least 3/4 of the time. His kids play hard and know how to tackle and block

I didn’t see a ton of downfield blocking and I saw no tackling yesterday.
….then we are back on the rails and motoring.

If Bohn fails, then we are on to a long 5 year stretch.
I’m certainly open to suggestions for better AD’s who just so happen to be looking for jobs right now and are willing to deal with an enraged fanbase in one of the most fickle sports environments in America.

Like the current AD, Hayden took the easy way instead of searching for a real top tier head cosch. It will take a clean sweep of all USC coaches and years to rebuild this shattered shell of USC’s former glory. Sadly the current AD seems no more ready to make a bold move on a new Head Coach then his predecessor.

If they misled him on those fronts then, I would imagine, that he could sue for constructive dismissal or any other reasons lawyers can come up with.
It was clear, at least to us outsiders, from the very beginning that he was misled. Her Supreme Highness said in no uncertain terms that he was in charge of football and the HC hire. 1. Agreed. They do NOT need a CEO. They need someone who, at a minimum, can:
      1- coach and develop players;
      2- put together a great staff and be able to replace departures when success brings in the vutures;
      3- recruit [HS, JC, portal];
4- be genuine [no more charlatans, please!] and maybe tell a joke or 2 [politically correct, of course LOL].

And as we’ve seen by the “alleged $95M/10 year offer to Mel Tucker” – pay for what they’ve done, not what you think they will do. Common sense dictates that if the HC/team are outperforming expectations, increases and extensions would be no object.
If the new guy insists on matching Tucker’s, Saban’s, Sweeney’s or Fisher’s deals and he doesn’t have Natys on his resume, then move on to the next guy who isn’t a nutcase.

  10. They should be able to find an outstanding coach. SC has more advantages than almost any other school. I can’t believe nobody notices that. On top of that, to have a good team you have have an experienced QB and that can take time to develope. Here at SC we already have someone. Dart has a great arm and is mobile when he is healthy. He needs to be more accurate….at this point he is not. But that will come. But it is not as if the new coach has to spend a whole season developing a seasoned QB. SC has everything that they need to win. If you are a great up and coming coach looking for the right place to make your mark, you have to be blind not to see the advantages.

The freshman approached an elevator on campus full of students he thought were from USC. He had to be held back by his friends as he went on an expletive-filled rant threatening to hurt any USC student. One girl tried to clear the air, saying “we go to Santa Barbara! Nobody’s a Trojan! We go to UCSB!” Toia still went off … yelling, “you a f***ing Trojan n****! I’ll slap a b****, too! I’ll slap a b****!”
When asked about the incident Chip Kelly said “We’re aware of a recent video in which a student-athlete made disparaging remarks. This was inappropriate and not in line with our values and expectations. As such, we are taking disciplinary action and working with campus partners to assist with educations for the student.” Education? Education?

I’ve always thought that at SC they were too strict about these kinds of incidents. Just think of all the players who have been kicked out of SC for virtually nothing. But this is pretty serious and they don’t seem to be doing anything. At USC, he would never again have put on the USC uniform and he would have nothing to complain about.

    1. 007 remember when Chas. “Wheelie” Wheeler went berserk on the cops and his girl friend. He started in SUCC’s game the following Sat. Just a little misunderstanding on “Wheelie’s part.

Who could forget the heroic Josh Shaw, who later admitted he had lied about the saving his nephew’s life. He started in the next game after confessing to jumping from a 2nd story balcony to evade the cops after an ugly, physical argument with his girlfriend.

Sark coaches the game after appearing sh*tfaced at a Friday night bozo FB rally.

007, let UCLA handle Mr. Toia problem, and you worry about the next bozo blowout loss.

      1. Shaw missed almost the whole season. Toia hasn’t missed a game that I know of. Sark got fired. Chas Wheeler. You got me on that one. It must have been a long time ago. I don’t remember it. But if it happened today, that would be the end of his USC career.

      2. Now I know who you are talking about. You’re talking about Chad Wheeler. But he was held out of the next game which was the Holiday Bowl. That was a big game to be held out of. Like I said Shaw missed almost the whole season for his incident and Sark was fired. Jay Toia hasn’t missed a game or even a practice as far as I know. They said they would handle it internally through education. Like I said, at UCLA the name of the game is “win baby”……AT ANY COST.

  13. SC has lived up to what I thought was to be a pathetic year due to hellton coaching ,even before his 5-7 year,sc was on the downhill slide.
    I figured 4-8 was a distinct possibility,while 5-7 was a good yr under hellton.
What a waste for these athletes and parents that bought his lies, and enjoyed his soft football. Folt led the admin charge and the AD tagged along as her servant.
I don’t know who will want to coach under her, guess someone with a strong stomach.
SC , the lost cause …

    1. Fire folt, at this point, I wish helton was here to reap what he sowed. I’d rather he have the negative press than people who have been trying to pick up the pieces of his mess. Not to say, I want him any longer than the last game……..boot him out with the record and let him live with what he did. Regarding folt, she is the product of the BOT. They are too busy sitting in their country clubs, sipping on their expensive wines and living in the past to know what’s happening. Folt is over her head like helton and if they don’t get rid of her soon, it will be devastating.

  14. My observations from Section 120B –

UCLA band really sucks. Their pregame and halftime show was awful!

USC band misses Art Bartner (cant’s believe I am writing this). The band just sounds off this year. Best band performance was homecoming when 1000 former band members joined the halftime show. The sound is not good!

FYI – I did not hear Tusk played once yesterday. Anyone else who attended please correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure I did not hear it once in the Stadium.

As I have written all year long – this is the WORST USC defense, maybe ever!! No tackling, no blitzes, no run stoppage, no NOTHING. Tony Orlando and Dawn should donate all compensation received to charity.

Offensively, we finally decide to use Malaepai. Dude is good receiver and good runner. Harrell is a moron. I honestly don’t think a healthy Drake would have made a difference in yesterday’s beatdown. Harrell better learn how to fill out CA State Unemployment paperwork because he is no employable as a college assistant coach at the moment.

Best moment of the day that sums up the season:
USC scores in 3rd quarter – goes for 2 and fails – Traveler comes out to the band playing Conquest – No timeout called by officials – USC kicks off and UCLA runs it back for a TD – Traveler is still on the sideline behind the North endzone – He didn’t even get a chance to even make back to the tunnel. UCLA scores to basically prevent any chance of a come back – We were only down by 9 at that point!!

Giving away my tickets for BYU as I am a bit burned out on the whole USC 2021 Football team. Had a great time at the games even in the COVID 19 era!! It was probably more a mental thing to add some normalcy back in our lives.

Again, F**K Barbara Ferrer and all those unelected bozos exerting their power over us!! I am vaccinated but enough is enough!!

    1. Good for you, BT. Glad you attended games.
I might get a season ticket for 2022. Life’s short, and I love my Trojan FB
      (since Thanksgiving 1969).

The band did NOT sound great over the TV–almost out of synch and out of tune. The Song Girls were still outstanding.

From my seat (section 1-1 on my home couch), I saw an offense which is getting better at run blocking, RB’s (Keontay and Vavae, maybe Barlow) who run SUPER hard, TE’s who have some athleticism (McCree?), and Gary Bryant JR and Tahj who both will be pretty good. Either QB is pretty darn good.

On D, we can hope that Drake and Foreman will get coached up by the next DC/DL coach and that Tuli stays with us. A full replacement at the LB’s will help, though Mauga came on in the later half of the season. Alford and Bullock might turn out to be pretty good DB’s.

With a coaching staff believing in smashmouth FB, we can be back in 2023. With the O talent returning and decent D fundementals, next year could be tolerable.

  15. Like Burrow, I too was at the game and wrote my observations, but I placed it here at the top of the replies section, so it will not be read.

To put a twist on an old saying, ‘If something is written, but it is not read– was it ever written?”
