Sunday Buzz: Some Incredibly Poor Decisions Haunt USC

Mike Bohn should be able to hire a pretty good coach after the season.

But some of his decisions have been reprehensible. People might forget how hands on he was (with Brandon Sosna) in the hiring of coaches for Clay Helton.

Specifically, they brought in Todd Orlando as defensive coordinator. How does that look today? He is definitely one of the worst defensive coordinators in USC history.

Bohn also waited too long to fire Helton. Why was it OK to fire Helton after two games in 2021 but not after the 2020 season?

Bohn also installed Donte Williams as interim head coach, when he was clearly over his head. But Bohn has tried to make Williams into a star and wanted him retained by a new coach.

I can’t believe Williams went for a field goal from the 6-yard line with USC trailing 35-17. USC had not stopped UCLA’s offense almost the entire game and he is kicking a field goal? He’s not ready for prime time.

  1. Orlando turned out to be worse than Pendergast. Who would have thought that? Turns out Hufanga covered up a lot of warts on defense last year.

    It is looking more like Folt told Bohn “Keep Clay on as long as possible. Help him out. Go get him some assistants who will make him look good. He is such a nice man. ”

    She snookered Bohn into thinking that he had the independence to make decisions for his dept. He should have walked. The fact that he didn’t tells us all we need to know about him.

      You’ve nixed the hiring of an undeniably talented coach in an effort to prove you’re a holier president than the ones at Florida or Ohio State, you’re on record as being “impressed” with Clay Helton (and you’ve lovingly accepted game balls from him which any descent person would have turned down in favor of deserving players) ….and today you go radio silent?! You felt the need to issue statements of compassion and understanding for those looting L. A. businesses …but you can’t go on record today and say “I bear a bit of responsibility for making USC a national laughing stock” …??!
      The fact Folt thinks she can ride this mess out without an apology to Trojan Nation tells you she’s a fucking, cowardly clown.

      1. btw, I’m fully aware of the fact a lot of folks here don’t like Tim Tessalone —but he’s served the university well and truly every minute he’s been with us. It’s sad he has to go out on this note. He deserves better.

      4. Thank you Michael, great post. Folt said after she first arrived that she was not in charge of hiring a football coach. Then, her ignorant power grab took over. Why the BOT allows this shows they are all aboard based on $$$$ not talent and integrity. If folt really had integrity, she would not have let helton destroy the dreams of athletes who were not properly developed for the NFL. Yes, those damn game balls……Slovis broke a record of two and he was passed up to kiss the rings of folt and bohn.
        I’d call that discrimination, pandering and corruption not integrity.

      5. Hey MG, I’ve met Carol Folt. I brought her a glass of orange juice when she wasn’t feeling well. You could criticize her for performances but don’t call her names. I agree she did not do things well when it comes to USC football but she is leading the university as a whole very well. We are now ranked higher in many publishings over ucla. In the 80’s USC was not even on the same page as UCLA in the school rankings!

        Besides, when we win the next two games we will be bowl eligible and have a winning season. Look on the bright side everyone!

      6. I am aware that some people are high on Carol Folt. I think that’s very nice. Having papers published is huge. They change the world for the better. Anyone with their name on a paper is a hero to me.

And your “glass half full” view on the football team’s potential 6-6 record this season is indicative of why the program has sunk to new level of mediocrity.       2. I hope you are right. However, if bohn and folt pick another fool, yes it will get worse. It will take a strong leader with a skill set to manage, recruit, player develop, hire great associate coaches, and ensure they teach the fundamentals. it would be great to actually see a solid tackle and some blocking…….and how about some variety of play calling.
        SC has become an embarrassment. And PLEASE recruit quality, sizeable, quick linemen. Until we have lines, we will stay crippled.

  2. 1. The most points any Hackett defense gave up was 38 (3 occasions, one a Win).
    2. The 2008 Defense gave up only 80 points TOTAL in 9 Conference Games, more than 1/3 of these in the Oregon State Loss which had a 2 Yard Drive.
    3. When you hire Big 12 Defensive Geniuses, you get Big 12 Defensive Results.

  5. I don’t care anymore. Haven’t for a while. I will say savior Dart did more mental sharting than saving. I do respect Dart’s resilience despite getting hit dead in his knee like 6 times. Isn’t fair to the kid to have him out there impersonating a piñata.

    3. Why would Coach Wittingham (a lifetime Utah resident, proud BYU LB star and grad, and proud developer of the program after Urban Meyer left) leave a place that adores him for a place that would run him out of town after 1 or 2 seasons losing to UCLA and/or ND?

      Utah is a great place to live, work, and recreate. Decent, moderate, cheerful, respectful, hard-working people.

  7. Clancy Pendergast, Tim Drevo, and all other former USC assistants under Helton get the last laugh at Mike Bohn after that performance Saturday.

    Instead of firing all the assistants he should have fired the entire staff including Helton at the conclusion on last season right after the Oregon game.

    It was not fair to the USC players who work so hard to fire Helton after the 2nd game of the season. He should have started completely over after last season now you have hit rock bottom, and that could have been avoided.

    It has been over two months since Helton was fired. Do you really think Bohn has interviewed any candidates yet, and is close to a decision as we approach December the 1st. here very soon.

    Recruiting has been a joke—–sure we have had some 4 star quarterbacks, defensive backs, and wide receivers the last few years, but ZERO LINEMAN on both sides of the ball and linebackers.. Sorry folks USC does not have the best talent in the Pac 12 any longer.

    I say we fire Mike Bohn right now, and bring in an athletic director who can hire a top football coach before it is too late. My other complaint he has not renewed the contract of Andy Enfield yet when he deserves an extension for doing a great job with the basketball program yet he makes a major committment to a women’s basketball program that brings in very little revenue to the this university. New coach Lindsay Gottlieb, is being overpaid, and sure she is a good coach but no way USC women’s basketball finishes higher than UCLA, OREGON, ARIZONA, OREGON STATE AND STANFORD under her leadership which means 6th place in the conference at best as those top programs are not going to slip, and yet she is probably the highest paid coach in the conference with probably an impossible task ahead to win a Pac 12 championship.

    I have a feeling most of the top football coaches in the country are going to turn down USC because they want full control, and don’t want to work for Mike Bohn and Carol Folt so it’s clean the complete house because the university is beyond repair at this point.

      No self respecting man is gonna play the kind of footsy Helton played [and Bohn is still playing] with Folt. Meaning, we are NOT gonna get the coach this team needs.
      Remember: none of these kids were quitters in high school. Just the opposite. So what happened to them? Folt and Bohn and Helton happened to them.

      1. Absolutely Michael. It’s why I am so angry they were not developed to advance their careers. I am a broken record on this, but I think folt committed a lack of integrity by coddling helton in favor of the athletes.
        Our NFL drafts are soooooo low because the NFL teams know USC doesn’t train its athletes. Look at poor Sam. A raw talent that has not had the success he would have had he been trained. i keep hoping he’ll be traded to Patriots and let Belichick develop him…….look what Belichick did with Cassel who didn’t play a down at SC. he had a longer career than the others who did thanks to the Patriot training.

  9. I do not believe the sorry state of the USC football program will affect Carol Folt’s position as the president. Now, if she messes up with other less important issues at the school, such as providing an education worthy of a $75,000 per year buy-in, then I am all in.

Read the goofy statements being issued by USC professors across the spectrum: they’ve embarked on the Undefinable Path of Righteousness [i.e., the university is stuck in the kind of lazily muddled ’90’s mindset the rest of the country is currently rejecting]. Luckily for Folt the Board is asleep at the wheel & doesn’t notice.

  10. Not good news–for USC trying to hire a top name coach.

    Dan Mullen fired as Florida Gators football coach today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    So now there are openings at USC, Florida, Washington, LSU so Aranda, and Fickell has 3 better choices. The word is out Carol Folt, and Mike Bohn are difficult work for so the better jobs are at Florida, Washington, and LSU.

    The longer Bohn waits the less chance we have to find a top coach who is willing to accept the job here, and what’s worse more jobs will open up after the season.

    This is the reason Helton and the entire staff should have been fired at the conclusion of last season. In addition, with many major jobs opening up it is going to cost USC even more money due to the competition from other universities also trying to hire a top coach.

    More and more it looks like due to Mike Bohn we might get stuck with a Jack Del Rio, or Jeff Fisher who are dying to return to USC even if they are last on the list.

        a 60 mile radius. Eleven “beatable” programs to compete with.

        Drawbacks–lousy commute to work and back home each day.

    1. After yesterday Donte should step down. The dumb & unnecessary 2 point try, the field goal when down by 3 TD’s….the smiling to himself on the sidelines as things got worse and worse….and the final big hug for the coach who tried to humiliate him further by going for 2 when leading by 3 TD’s…. all add up to the kind of disgrace that merits pink slipping himself….
      I know the crap o-line is not Donte’s fault. But the route running by our receivers —which still depends on them snagging the high balls when they aren’t built for it —the out of position play by our defensive backs …and the lazy special teams performance —should all have been addressed by now. Instead it all gets worse each week.

Special teams is a joke as is the lack of tackling, blocking and the keystone cop routines in the defensive backfield…….and what about the d-line….. regarding routes, I suspect coaches kept plays in that were intended for Drake London and failed to notice skill level and heights of receivers of the inexperienced young guys.

      3. …in a shoot out, the metrics say go for two to make the lead more difficult to surmount. I didn’t like the 2 pt try by Chip, but it was NOT grandstanding.

        Likewise, the on-sides kick at 6 min was too early. Nevertheless, we knew we would never stop their O, but still, kick away.

        The O-line has improved over the past 2 years in run blocking.
        UCLA was actually ranked pretty well against the run before this game.

        Anyway, you will likely see Donte recruiting for UCLA next year and coaching their DB’s, Michael.

    1. Del Rio has wanted the job for as long as I can remember. He does bleed cardinal and gold and would put everything into the job. He was a great player. If he could assemble a good team of coaches, he could be successful. However, I would prefer Aranda, Petersen, Campbell
      and please not franklin……..and really be sure about Fickell. If his wife isn’t committed, it’s foolish to risk she’d want to return to Ohio.

  13. One key point about Del Rio and Fisher. Many former USC players I hear are pushing for them to get the job. Definitely, not my favorite choices but both would be available to take over in December, and much cheaper than some of the other candidates which I am sure Bohn and Folt both like. There is no question that USC does not want to get in a bidding war for Aranda, and Fickell with the other major universities who also have head coach openings, and I don’t think USC can wait to make the hire in mid-January after the bowl season, and what if their No. 1 and No.2 options which appear to be Aranda and Fickel take jobs elsewhere.

    Sorry I just don’t see USC spending 10 to 12 million/yr on a top football coach, and there will be a bidding war for the top coaches especially with more jobs opening up in December. For this reason don’t be surprised if you see Jack Del Rio introduced as the new Head Football Coach at USC in December whether you like it or not. This was a long shot in the beginning of the search process, but it is not now.

    1. Hiring JDR under these circumstances would be a disaster and a sin. Why the fuck shouldn’t USC get in a bidding war? Sportswriters across the country are wondering why a university as rich as USC is unwilling to do what is necessary to get themselves a first rate coach. Well, the answer is Folt WANTS to oversee the managed decline of the football program. Let’s not act like that’s okay.

      1. Thanks for your enlightened opinion. I’m not sure why you have a negative opinion about JDR. However, I do agree, we should be in a bidding war for the BEST. If not, we’ll stay just another NCAA member.
        Folt should be bypassed and not involved. She has the wrong personal attitude. I’d like to know if mrs. integrity lied about her commitment to football when she applied for the job.

    2. If we hire Del Rio, we are bound to fail.

      Much better to hire Venables or Lanning or, here’s a new thought, Jeff Grimes, the OC at Baylor, who was previously at BYU. Grimes has offensive line coaching experience and has been the coordinator at BYU, where his team was in the top offenses statistically in the nation.

      If we cant get a really great current HC, then let’s not settle for a mediocre coach. Let’s just find the best possible coordinator to promote. That is what worked for both Cincinnati and Baylor and Georgia (in the past).

      Maybe Dave Clawson is another coach who is a really smart, innovative guy who can find a way to win.

      Not Del Rio or any other ex-player without recent relevant experience.

      1. Aranda at $50 mil for 5 years. A good deal.
      2. Fickell–likely won’t come here. He will leave Cincy this year.

      3. Matt Campbell, Jeff Brohm, etc–committed to the College game and all its peculiarities. Campbell has had several offers to go to the NFL.

      I still like Campbell as the “darkhorse” candidate.

  14. Let’s face it the football program is in the tank, a shit show.
    While I am not privy to the exact amount of influence Bird Legs
    has over the football program, it is quite evident it is plenty.
    If Bohn is able to hire a type flight head coach, which I have my doubts about, the new coaches attitude must be “fuck you and the horse you rode in on, this is my program”. Then Bird Legs can retire to her $8 million
    dollar house in Samo and watch the fucking sea gulls fly by.

  15. The FG put them within two scores. It was a good decision at the time.

    The bad decision was to go for two. You take the extra point and you are within one score. Fail and it is two scores. That was the “not-ready-for-primetime” decision.

      1. At that point, the effort could have resulting in a “teaching moment” that could have elevated the players having their coach believe in them. When you are hopelessly behind, use the time to learn and improve. I don’t care if we lost by 20 or 10, I do care the team learns and gets better each week.

  16. We need to get the new coach is place in early December otherwise it’s a big risk waiting for Aranda and Fickell until mid January, and it will put us in a huge bidding war for their services based on alot of major programs looking for a head coach.

    Del Rio might not be the best choice, but we need to act quickly. I am sure he would bring Kennedy Pola back as the running backs coach since they are very close friends. Jack is a tough competitor/ physical football is his game, and I think he wants the position badly. He would fit our needs as long as he hires one of the top offensive coordinators in the country, and I am sure he will tell Bohn and Folt. this is how we did it in the past, and this is how we are going to run this program now.

    1. I am also starting to fear that we will not be able to get either Aranda or Fickell. Fickell might want to stay a Cincinnati. Aranda is probably the best chance we have at a really great coach and we should do everything possible. But he will have his pick of top coaching jobs. If Mel Tucker stays at MI state, Franklin might stay at Penn, Jimbo Fisher stays at Texas A&M, then there are not alot of coaches for LSU to go after and they might focus on Aranda as their #1. I think that USC still has the best chance, since his family probably wants to come here.

      So if we dont get Aranda, what do we do? I am starting to think that a top DC might be the next best alternative. There are two great coaches out there – Brent Venables and Dan Lanning. The question with Lanning is whether he is the one that makes the Georgia defense great, or is it Kirby Smart? Does Lanning have enough experience to step up to HC? Venables definitely has the experience to be a HC.d Both Venables and Lanning are great recruiters, so that would not be a problem. I am also sure either one can get great coaches under them.

      If we hire a DC, we need to pair him up with a great OC. Could we steal Jeff Grimes from Baylor? He was responsible for BYU’s offense and now Baylor. He is a guy we should definitely target. I could even make the argument that Grimes could be a HC candidate for USC. He has tons of experience, including experience coaching offensive line and run game for LSU and offensive line at Auburn.

      I would rather get Grimes on the up-swing, than take a mediocre coach like Del Rio who knows the USC fight song.

      Sometimes you have to think outside the box. If we had seen the potential in Aranda two years ago and hired him as HC and fired Clay, we could be a top 10 team. You cant be afraid to take this type of chance, when you can see plenty of proof that there is a one of a kind coach out there.

    2. The longer it takes, the more teams looking for coaches and the perceived stinginess and difficulties with Folt/Bohn pretty much leads me to believe that the top choices of Fickell, Aranda and Campbell will be “taking their talents” elsewhere.
      Regardless of whether Fisher or JDR are hired, the football programm should encourage former players to continue to be a part of the program so that traditions, mindset, etc are passed down. When you hear players being quoted as sayong that a successful season is beating UCLA, it just makes you want to puke as they have no idea what the football tradition is and how to contnue it Not to dump on Chris Steele but his reaction after the loss was, yeah it’s bad but it’s just like any other loss and time to think about the next game. A loss to UCLA or ND should never be brushed aside. It should be eating away at your soul only to be purged when you destroy them the following year.
      The again, they were taught at Helton’s “It’s not who we are” school of football.

      1. Our players are assuming Clay Helton’s attitude about losing efforts —it’s enough they tried their hardest (or came with 75% of their hardest….or no less than 55% at the very least). I could see Dart was pissed off –but I didn’t sense that feeling coming from many other players. In fact, UCLA players said after the game they KNEW they could “outlast” our players (in other words, they knew our guys would give up by the 4th quarter).
        What happened yesterday hasn’t quite sunk in yet with a lot of fans —but it will over time: losses are totally acceptable at USC today. They don’t matter. What a legacy Folt and Bohn are gonna leave behind.

  19. I agree with you that Bohn should be able to hire a pretty good coach. USC football is one of the best college football coaching jobs out there. We’re no longer under NCAA sanctions. We still have a lot of talent on this team and are still sitting on top of the countries best talent market. The other advantages(weather, academics, the glitter of a big city and on and on) are still there . Almost anyone would be a step up from CH but with all those advantages, they should be be able to get someone really good. With that talent market right in SC’s backyard, I don’t think it takes a Nick Saban to win a NC.

  21. I just don’t see Carol Folt, and Mike Bohn spending 10-12 million a year for a coach. Would most of the fans do it absolutely, but the decision is made by Bohn and Folt who obviously don’t consider having a dominant football program that important even though it is.

    Many ex players have placed calls into both Folt and Bohn, and none have received even a courtesy returned phone call so that tells you right there they don’t care what others think , and it’s an insult to the power they both think they have.

    Maybe Bohn has a silent oral agreement with Fickell to take over after the season, but if he doesn’t we’re in big trouble because Florida, Washington, and LSU will be calling both Fickell and Aranda soon.

    Despite what we all use to think USC is at this time not a top job partly due to the City of Los Angeles where many consider not the best place to raise a family, and Carol Folt and Mike Bohn have a bad reputation.

    We all think it will be Aranda, or Fickell as the clock turns daily I see less and less a possibility this is going to happen. Who knows maybe Pete Carroll gets fired in Seattle after the disappointing season Seattle is having, and he then decides to return to prove he still has it at age 70.

    All I know is they better get someone in place in early to mid-December the rest of the Pac 12 are licking their chops not only at the recruiting prospects without USC as competition, and the Transfer Portal where surely alot of players will transfer with the unknown head coach factor including Kendon Slovis, and probably Corey Foreman.

    1. The price of coaches just went up when Tucker was offered the ridiculous $95M/10 yr contract when he hasn’t won a thing in the Big10 let alone a Naty. Coaches salaries just went up across the board!
      Besides if donors want to foot the bill why should Folt/Bohn care what is being paid. Once again, a successful football program brings in $$$$, a losing one runs in a deficit with other major detrimental effects [fan apathy, loss of school pride, lack of donations, etc].

  22. I said this here, I said it there, I’ll say it again so you’re aware. Mike Bohn should pick up a phone. On said phone he needs to dial and talk to someone for a while. He needs to quit, proven unfit.
    What can he do? What can he do? He followed the script and wrote it too. His job it seems was to save money, while screwing the team it may sound funny. To avoid a buyout of a lesser man, he hired assistants in his grand plan. To prop up a clown coach, he did his best. He brought new coaches out to the west. But his new coaches knew, that their contract was linked to Helton’s too. So they disrespected their benefactor and their attitude became a huge detractor. It grew obvious that Bohn was in over his head and propping up the imposter seemed dead. So do we trust with this big hire to the guy who lit this dumpster fire.

      Certainly, firing HC CH after the Holiday Bowl was warranted.
      There likely were some good choices (Aranda) at that time.
      However, maybe NOW IS the best time to be searching for a new HC.
      Admittedly, several hot shot FB programs are also in the competition,
      but no program on the list–including LSU–has the heritage nor advantage that USC has.

      The greatest # of #1 draft choices in history.
      The greatest # of NFL HOF in history.
      etc, etc.

      The #19 academic University in America (per WSJ).
      Only Notre Dame comes close.

  23. 10 million a year probably will get you a good coach now, but will Folt, Bohn, and Caruso approve that, and let the guy run the show. I highly doubt that, but maybe they learned a lesson this year that football is in fact very important at USC, but will they give up the power.

    Probably the best thing that has happenned is people stopped attending games, and giving money so I am sure they have gotten the very strong message. The question is will they respond, react, and most of all do their jobs this time.

  24. For some of us old-timers (or FEELING like an old-timer) it is time to turn in on this Sunday night, only 4-nights away from Thanksgiving.

    Basically, and interestingly, I am thankful for I, which is another way of saying ‘you’ because we’re all ‘one’ in this. You are a miracle!

    Mathematically, the odds of you even having been born probably start at
    1 in 1,000,000,000, or one in one billion. Congratulations! You just beat lottery odds.

    And don’t forget who is responsible for you. And who knows, it might even be worth falling on our knees sometime this Season.
