I guess I need to point out (again) that Ed Orgeron took over from Lane Kiffin in 2012 after USC allowed 62 points to Arizona State and went 6-2.

Orgeron also did it with a reduced roster because of NCAA sanctions, no transfer portal additions and no extra scholarships from COVID-19.

But Donte Williams says he needs two years to change things.

It never ends. It really doesn’t.

  2. Bless his heart for his rose color glasses and optimism. As much as I have rooted for his success, I believe he needs to train under a quality coach who can teach him. He is even less ready than helton and that’s not nice to say.

  3. Dr. Timothy Leahy changed the culture real fast –with LSD. Perhaps, Bohn and Carol need some of that. Drugs are bad but it can help some with mind expansion, and that’s what both of them need.

    Donte, is basically just asking for a two year contract extension.

  4. I know I will be kissed off/or thrown off this blog eventually, it seems to be ingrained in my DNA or something.

    But I am so optimistic about SC football that I am beside myself. I foresee the 7-point favorite BYUs fainting when they see how improved our team is after the sucla beat-down. Boy, are those Mormons in for an SC surprise.

    So then tucked away with that Mormon Mission conquest by our SC boys, on to Cal, who we seldom lose to, and although this will be a tougher assignment than in years past, SC does not lose to Cal, period!

    Problem is, if SC wins these last 2 games and goes 6-6, they are bowl eligible. I am not sure if I am ready to watch a “bowl game” where neither team has much of a positive win-loss record.

    Oh well, take me to heaven when you are ready, because there ain’t much sports value left for me on earth.

  5. He didn’t say that he needed 2 years, he said it takes 2 years (generally speaking). Regardless, I disagree as well, it took PC one year to clear out the same trash & culture he had inherited from Hackett.

    1. Actually, Donte DID say it would take him 2 years —because of all the “obstacles.” He said it as kind of a semi-explanation as to why he hasn’t fixed anything yet. See, two year haven’t gone by. He’ll be ready to lead the Trojans about halfway through 2023.

  6. Who cares anymore. They’re all just flailing around trying to pin the blame on someone else. It will be interesting to see what all the assistant coaches say about what happened after they’re gone. I don’t think it’s gonna be flattering for Minister Bohn.

  7. At Stanford, It took Jim Harbaugh 3 years. He had 2 losing seasons and then the 3rd year they went 8-5. His 4 th year he was 12-1. But that was at Stanford down on the farm. You can’t compare that with USC. Stanfords players were like farmers compared to USC’s players. Chris Petersen took Washington to the playoffs in his 3rd year where they lost 24-7 in the first round to Alabama. Again, Washingtons players don’t compare with SC’s players. Get the right coach in there and it won’t take that long, especially if you start recruiting well and bringing in a lot of great players and you create a situation where if a player was a starter but he was soft, he’s going to end up 3rd string and sitting on the bench.

    2. USC #35 by BPI. The non-con schedule is not impressive. SDSU could surprise. Georgetown and Georgia Tech on the downside…Okie State never too tough…

      Still, Pac 12 should be quite competitive and could send 5 teams to the dance.

  9. And Clay Helton coached the bowl game that year and beat #20 Fresno State 45-20. Does Helton get credit for “sustaining” the culture Orgeron “changed”? The culture that existed during the Kiffin era was no where near the culture Helton created.

    1. Helton as head coach wasn’t a bad thing at the beginning. But he changed. Keeping the job became his only objective. To stay alive he started talking incredible B. S. about how building a physical team necessitated no touching in practice, about how his collection of handoffs and second raters constituted the best staff in the country and how Carol Folt and Mike Bohn deserved game balls for their “awesome contributions.” In other words the nice guy that jumped in and beat Fresno State (which wasn’t a legitimate top 20 team, btw) disappeared. In his place was that Gollum character who needed to possess The Ring…whatever the cost to himself and anyone around him.

      2. Helton was never a good coach, not even at the beginning. Take away the 2 Sam Darnold years and he was 25-18 as a HC and without those 3 miracles last year, he would have been 22-21. But even 25-18 is not very good with the talent that he had.

    2. Kiffin had the disadvantage of having only 55 players due to the sanctions. In retrospect when looking at that, he performed much better than inept helton with a full 85 scholarship roster. Because of the sanctions Kiffin had, I think the conditions make it difficult to compare his performance to others.

        it is similar to PCC sanctions of mid 50’s…sc had about 35 scholarship athletes to start Don Clark’s head coach 3 yr tenure.

      2. At one time Kiffin only had 8 scholarship O-Linemen. He was having a hard time forming a practice squad especially on the O-Line.

  10. Culture change cannot be measured in wins and losses only. From a broader perspective it should be measured on two items. One, level of effort. Is the team practicing and playing hard? Two, improvement. Did the team get better as the year progressed? During the Clay Helton Era the answers to these questions are a resounding no. Look at Utah. They began the season at 1-2. Now they’ve won the South and probably the conference, because of a sustained level of effort and improvement. That’s what happens when you have a competent head coach and staff.

      I have to admit they surely dominated that home game. I just wonder if same at a neutral sight and Oregon coaches having time to prepare for Utah…guess the Ore St game vs Oregon will be a good yard stick.

      1. Hit Oregon in the mouth and their D will wilt. Teams with the strongest Offensive Lines in the Pac 12 are Stanford, Utah and Oregon State. 2 Losses and counting. Beavers will win this game.

  11. Fwiw, USC football has bad shit culture ever since Pete decided he wanted to take the program all Hollywood. Like ‘04 or ‘05. He had security dudes for Leinart & Reggie that kept kids from asking for autographs as they walked off the practice field. Leinart and Dwayne Jarrett living in some luxury tower and then showing up in all the paparazzi pics from the clubs. Like, what sort of culture do you have if you’re embracing Snoop Dogg, Will Farrell, and the Lachey dude that was married to Jessica Simpson? Yeah, culture. Kind of a nebulous term

    1. Having Snoop on the sidelines only helped with recruiting in So Cal.
      Same with Will Farrell. Nothing wrong with keeping things light-hearted. The Trojans played with HEART and SWAGGER back then.
      They were good and they knew it. Pete kept things upbeat.
      It was a good, COMPETITIVE culture and the best wanted to be a part of it.

    2. In Bohn’s mind, Donte probably deserves it. Holding UCLA to 62 points, eloquently sermonizing on how “losing sucks”, smiling to himself on the sidelines as things on the field turn to shit, bringing fans to the games by the dozens —he’s Mike’s kinda guy….

  15. When Lou Holtz went to Minnesota in 1984, they were coming off a 1-10 year which included an 84-13 Loss to Eventual #2 Nebraska and a 69-18 Loss to Ohio State. In 1984, they lost to Nebraska 38-7 and 35-22 to an Ohio State Rose Bowl Team. In 1985, they lost 13-7 to eventual National Champion Oklahoma (throwing into the End Zone late in the game with a chance to win) and 23-19 to Ohio State. So yes, the right coach can take a garbage program and turn it around in two years. I was at the Oklahoma game, still one of the hardest hitting games I have ever seen on both sides. OU had Bosworth and that group.

  16. It took Kiffen 0 years at Florida Atlantic. It took Kiffen 0 years at Ole Miss. Heck, in the least vaccinated state in the country it took Kiffen 0 years to get 100% of his team vaccinated.
