USC Morning Buzz: Donte Williams’ Situation Becomes Clearer?

It sure looks like we are getting a clearer picture about the future of interim coach Donte Willliams although it happened by accident.

Five-star cornerback Domani Jackson said in an interview that he was down to Alabama and USC and mentioned he has been texting Oklahoma cornerbacks Roy Manning.

“I’ve heard from Coach (Alex) Grinch and and Roy Manning, who was the DB coach at Oklahoma,”Jackson told 247 Sports. “I’ve been texting back and forth with Coach Manning and looking forward to meeting those guys in person.”

Oops. This incensed Oklahoma fans — and probably its administration — because Manning is still working at Oklahoma and was recruiting for the Sooners on Tuesday.

But for USC, if Manning comes, it would seem to mean the end for Williams, who also coaches cornerbacks.

Williams’ comment Tuesday night sounded a bit like someone who would not be around.

“Like I always told you, the administration at USC would do the right thing and they made a splash hire. Bright, bright, bright future for USC football going ahead.”

  • Here’s an article from Sportico on that viral tweet that supposedly had the details of Lincoln Riley’s new contract USC. The story debunks one detail, that USC bought two of Riley’s houses in Oklahoma.
  • Five months after Georgia hired USC track and field coach Caryl Smith-Gilbert, it hired USC women’s soccer coach Keidane McAlpine.

The common denominator is Georgia’s deputy athletic director, Magdi El Shahawy, who spent 18 years working at USC.

Smith-Gilbert was probably thrilled to hear of Riley’s hiring at USC (and expected massive contract) when she couldn’t even get bonuses for her assistant coaches last spring after winning an NCAA title.

  1. Do you have any insight on Riley reaching out to any alumni and inviting them to be on his staff? Any former coaches coming back that can recruit like Tee Martin? Is Riley going to go after Arch Manning now that he’s at USC? Don’t just think he’s just a lock to go to Tennessee. Kick the tires on him. Time to make this program big time. USC needs to go after every 5 star out there still. Especially in the trenches. Time to get the top players in the transfer portal like Riks out of LSU. The 5 star linemen from Oregon; although I hear he’s a head case. Maybe Riley and staff can straighten him out. The skys the limit for this team.

    1. I hope they have NO ex players on the staff unless they have the credentials to warrant it, Colbert didn’t exactly light the world on fire.

He just got a commit from the 2nd ranked player in the 2023 class who is a QB, why do we need Arch Manning ?

And Manning is still at OU, from the text it seems like he’s headed to USC.

      1. So he’s at OU still recruiting for USC how does that make any sense? Sounds like an NCAA violation ready to happen with Manning recruiting Domani Jackson.

  2. How bad was the current/soon to be former staff ?

This is from an article today in The Athletic.

” Riley inherits a USC roster that ranks 10th nationally in talent composite. Oklahoma is currently the only Big 12 team with a roster in the top 10 of 247Sports Talent Composite rating. Texas, at No. 11, is the league’s only other team ranked higher than 29th. The Sooners’ roster currently would rank fourth in the SEC.”

10th in talent = 4-7 under this bunch of clowns. And the Drunk is doing wonders at Texas, Haden, what a judge of coaching talent.

Oregon and UDUB are the only other PAC 12 teams ranked in the top 20 nationally.

    More from the story

” It might take two years for Riley to have the best roster in the Pac-12 every single year (by far), and the road to the national title would mean beating one or two SEC teams in an expanded College Football Playoff instead of a large group of them every year in an eight or nine-game conference schedule. “

    1. I agree with you this staff has to go and can’t coach a lick with all that talent. That’s been the problem for the last 12 years. No coaching to the development of players at reaching their full potential. How many 5 stars have been bust for USC? There was an article a few years back that said “Where 5 stars go to die”, USC. It had a list of all the 5 stars that didn’t do squat and tgen ended up transferring or got injured. The more 5 stars USC gets the better. Especially with their track record. I don’t care if they got the 2nd rated QB in the 2023 class. Get the most talent period.

  3. So here’s the deal, is anybody going to cry over losing Williams? IS he the most inept head coach since Clay Helton?
I expect the new coach will evaluate all of the position coaches as has been reported in numerous papers he was on campus Tuesday taking notes. I predict Williams will be somewhere on Sunday getting ready for next season. Can you imagine Georgia Southern with a recruiter like Donte?

      1. Oregon seems to be doing just fine without him. That’s a bit of a red flag when it comes to his coaching ability.

Plus, it’s clear Riley won’t have a problem recruiting.

    1. You can bring back Tee Martin and put him to replace Donte for recruiting. He recruited so Cal very well when he was here. Get all the recruiters you can get to make USC big time again.

      1. @Harry P Oregon might be losing their coach this weekend after the Pac 12 championship game. The U Miami is going to come after him hard. Christinbol is gone when they offer him a boat load of cash to go to Sunny Florida and leave rainy Oregon.

      2. Why do you want to go back to Tee ? He couldn’t coach either.

I think Oklahoma has more talent on their team than USC, I think the guys recruiting for OU are better than the ones SC had.

I think the guys on the OU staff can coach better than the ones SC had.

If he brings most or all of his staff, SC will be much better off, seems like Riley wants coaches who can recruit and coach, let the past go.

    2. Clay is probably trying to weasel out of the GS deal as he’s DEFINITELY underpaid going by the present landscape. If he couldn’t get Natys here, he’s in full stealth mode to get the Sooners job to bring Natys there by playing Tough, Physical football.
Donte will probably end up at UCLA. Chip and Donte had what seemed an extended chat after UCLA’s recent beatdown.

      1. Let Chip have him, what’s he going to sell about ucla ? ” Hey, come play for us, I’ll coach you from a 3 star to a 1 star and you’ll get your ass kicked by USC and our fat fuck coach will be gone in a year or two, and so will I “

  4. 5* WR Makai Lemon decommits from OU – sounds good for USC – his 5* QB just committed and Lemon says “USC has always been my dream school.”

    Fingers crossed

    1. LOL, I don’t think it’ll be long before Lemon commits to USC, same for the MD RB and DB, the recruiting train is rolling and not stopping anytime soon, just get some good OL, DL & LB’s, not just skill players.

    1. The first time in the history of football that a former USC coach lost to Appalachian State.

What a fraud. And he knew it. He depreciated USC knowing full well he was completely unqualified for the job. Because nobody goes from USC to Georgia Southern. Complete embarrassment.

      1. Does anyone remember Gerry Faust. He went from Moellar High School directly to the head coaching position at Notre Dame, had a miserable record, was fired, and then took a job coaching at Akron. He was unable to win even at Akron.

Reminds me of Helton. I suspect that Georgia Southern will fire Clay within three years.

    2. “I’ve been blown away by the interest in coaches wanting to be part of this Georgia Southern program,” adds Helton. “Over the next two weeks we will be adding new members to the coaching staff.”

      What a bullshit artist.

Are the “interested” people Calloway, Baxter and Clancy ?

  5. I kept Pete Carrol’s Initial Message to Trojan ticketholders —it’s interesting to see how closely Lincoln Riley’s First Message to fans resembles Pete’s. Both stress hard work over false promises. Both say they plan to work themselves and everybody else as hard as possible….and that nothing good happens unless EVERYBODY is doing their job to the best of their ability.
Contrast this with Helton’s empty words in 2016 about “expecting championships” and “a return to the glory days” ….without mentioning work ethic.
Clay was a huckster. The kind of huckster only other hucksters fall for (Carol? You listening?). Lincoln Riley is the real deal.

  6. Just watched the video of Lincoln at USC’s practice. I wouldn’t want to be any of the receivers dropping passes in the end zone …. 10 feet from where Lincoln was standing. Or the guys doing laps at half speed.

      1. I hope that you are right about the NCAA being dead because I’m already hearing rumors about recruiting violations because they say that the Oklahoma DB coach(Manning) is working for Oklahoma and recruiting for SC.

      2. He will have an OC, up in the press box. This sounds weird, but in keeping Harrell they both do air raid, Harrell will mature, and Riley will have the last word. Not that I am a Harrell fan, but if there is a problem getting an OC, it would be a way around it.

Riley runs the spread offense. That’s different from the air raid. The spread is a better run offense than the air raid. There is more emphasis on blocking the run in the spread than in the air raid.
