Morning Buzz: Did USC Almost Have A Mutiny Yesterday?

Rumors were flying yesterday that some players did not want to practice because they were upset over the status of interim coach Donte Williams.

The start of Wednesday’s practice was delayed 45 minutes and there was a team meeting.

Significantly, four-star cornerback Jaeden Gould of Oradell, New Jersey, announced he decommited from USC, which could be taken as a sign Williams was not returning to USC.

“There are some upset players,” a source within the program said. “And you have a meaningless game Saturday (vs. Cal). So people are not especially motivated.”

Williams said Thursday morning there was no disagreements among the players about whether to play the Cal game. He said the team meeting/delay was to make sure everyone “was on the same page.”

I put some of this on Mike Bohn, who made Williams the interim coach, which has caused some of the turmoil. Some players are unhappy but there isn’t any real leadership dealing with it other than Williams, who probably already knows he is out the door. There is speculation he might get hired at Washington.

  1. Any player currently on the USC roster that wants to leave, please show them the door. You don’t hear about sentimental Bull shit like that on top 5 programs, it’s one for all, and all for one, take that crap 💩 to Georgia Southern, and their imbecile coach .

    1. Perfect Bill!!! I would rather have the spoiled brats leave and start anew with quality players. Do they really believe they would be missed??? Great record they have.

    2. Players please leave … make it easy for HCLR before he shows you the door. Crappy players anyway (besides Dart and Ingram). Do not let Donte leave … fire him ! Worthless con.

  2. Self selection is what that is… players who didn’t want to practice, or those who don’t want to play against Cal are simply raising their hand and saying “cut me, trade me, xfr me, I’m not your kinda player Coach Riley”… thanks for making it easy

  3. Players like these are the very reason USC was a rudderless ship. They should know in no short order that “There’s a new sheriff in town” – and his name is Lincoln Riley. These players can go play for Georgia Southern – they’d be a perfect fit.The head coach is always judged by his results.Clay didn’t get any and neither would Donte.Note to these “kids” – start pulling for the program and not your own SELFISH desires. That will factor into your player profile, by the way.So FIGHT ON for ol’ SC! Riley can’t cleanse this roster fast enough, in my opinion.NONE of SC’s players should be entitled to anything.GO PLAY FOR CLAY.

Sounds as though Donte had to calm down his “Groupies” Williams could be Poison in the Locker Room in the future….might be smart to usher him out of the Program..NOW!

    1. Watcher,

I don’t think it is Coach Williams. I think it is just players who have put all their effort to help Williams over reacting. I think Coach Williams squashed the problem. I think he has done a great job with what he had to deal with. I wish him the only the best. He deserves the backing from the fans. That is my thought. Thank you.

      1. Pasadena,
I want to look at this analytically.
Donte Williams … Super Recruiter, going to take back the West Coast, really ?
He sure didn’t effect Oregon’s recruiting, who did he take from them ? No one.
Dontes recruiting prowess surely doesn’t equal that on OU’s roster or Oregon’s or any other good programs. It clear to see what he brought to USC, individuals not team players.

Interim Coaching, Washington , Washington State and USC had interim coaches, two were failures and one was moderately successful, the least of which was Wazzu by record.

Recruiting threat if he leaves USC and stays in PAC12 … I doubt it!

      2. Watcher,

i am go to comment from your comment below:

I agree, I thnk Williams was a good recuriter for Oregon. However, SC is a different entity that demands better recruits than Oregon. I don’t think he could pull the kids in what SC is used to due to Helton and the program not being good. However, as a head coach, yes he did not win as we had wanted, but he was placed in a position that he had no experience and he was fighting a losing atmosphere at SC. He was also dealing with cordinators that had no business being cordinators and that is their fault for losing. Orlando and Harell deserve most blame for the skematics that they ran for the offense that was run. Both were horrible. Then to have Slovis get killed when he is not a runner was horrible. Slovis is more of a pocket passer and the offense should have been built around that. Dart will succeed in Riley’s offense because he can run.

Yes, Coach Williams did not win. That is the final result that all fans want. But I will take a step further and see what he did to help the team. I think he did his best with what he had. Thank you.

  5. Option number 2 – go play for the Bruins so you can cut practice and go “over the wall.”-(and don’t let the door hit your behind on the way out)

  6. How about putting it ALL on Williams? I don’t blame the person that offers the spot, I blame the one who accepted the interim position & can’t chill out the immature attitudes. Let them act out, it just makes it easier to cut these fools & make space for real ballers.

    1. Having Donte as the interim coach sounded like a good idea at the time. If they could go back in time, Orlando or Jinks should’ve been it. Dante me turn out to be a great coach, although I have my doubts. And he’s a good recruiter. However, coaching a college team for 10 games requires more experience and maturity.

  7. Scooter,

All of this turmoil could have been diverted by having a team meeting once Helton was fired. Mr. Bohn should have addressed the team the following day and say that there will be a new coach coming in at the end of the season and if there is a problem now let us know. We will address it and if it can’t be resolved, then we will release you from your scholi at the end of the season. Also mention that there will be no mutiny else they will be released now.

However, I think this will be the last blow back about Coach Donte Williams. Riley is making progress in recruiting and will be able to replace players and recruits. That is the most important thing for him right now, and that is to recruit and talk to players who want to stay at SC and play for him. He needs to know what he will have for next year.

    1. It’s great for Coach Riley to see who are team players and who are self serving. We need team players with ambition to be successful. The helton poison lives on in too many of these young men with an over exaggerated opinion of their value.

      1. If a team racked up an 11-0 season we could all understand it having an exaggerated opinion of it’s value —- but how did THIS bunch arrive at that opinion? Aren’t these the guys who got absolutely crushed by STANFORD?

  10. Nothing to see here…Just Scotty Pearbody trying to manufacture some shite during the greatest off-the-field week in USC football history. The beauty of having a LEADER is that all this will be dealt with properly. You think there are Saban or Belichick players who would even consider a mutiny…no chance. Watch the movie about Bear Bryant called The Junction Boys…he would smoke cigars at night in the dark and relish in watching the weak players run off:

  11. This incident right here should show you the mindset of some of these players. You have a Head Coach who is coming into the program who is miles ahead of what you’ve had the last five years, and instead of going all out and making a good impression of Lincoln Riley, you’re going to throw a temper tantrum because of some half ass recruiting coordinator is not going to be on the staff. If I was Riley I would tell these malcontents that if you do not want to be a Trojan, go ahead and turn in your gear and hit the transfer portal asap, because we can use your scholarship on someone who wants to be here. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Time to get real recruits in there not quasi 2 stars.

    1. the db #27, the freshman from Muir. He has busted it. If Drake Jackson comes back and if he is played as a de instead of a hybrid lber/de, then he has potential to wreck havoc. you need some older players on the team to help the new kids coming in. If Steele can be coached properly and he shuts his TRAP, thden he can stay. I think a lot of the recievers will improve and will help. Oline, needs to be rebuilt now with jucos and get new recrutis in and let them develop for a year. RB’s are improving.

  13. This seems to be a situation where at least some of the players were planning to boycott practice to protest replacement of coaching staff and support staff by the new coach!? Note to team: you performed poorly this year. That is why you have a new coach. It’s his decision on who stays or goes. Not yours. This is true not only in sports, but in all types of businesses in all walks of life. Hopefully you can re-dedicate to your teammates and USC. No clubhouse lawyering.

    2. With all the coaching changes at big time universities, this will be a transfer portal like none other. Lots of quality players will be available. Gerald Martinez predicts that Reilly will add 15 to 20 players from the transfer portal and that USC will lose an equal or larger number.

Can’t happen soon enough. Get the primadonnas out of the program.

      4. Ryan Kartje reports “Wednesday’s practice was one of the most sparsely attended of the season”. I recall times when there were as many as 29 sitting out Clay Helton’s practice due to injuries. Possibly some malingering going on. Carol Folt and Mike Bohn let the program disintegrate for two years into this toxicity. Lincoln Riley will clean it up one way or another.

  14. I would keep Williams but in any event, the players should have no say in that decision. In todays america we give too much power to 20 year olds. They have never been married, never raised any kids and have never even had a long term job. They know nothing about nothing. Most of them are just plain dumb. Take a microphone and go on campus and start asking questions about american history and other subjects and you will see how dumb they really are. They are not qualified to make decisions about this team or anything else. This is not a put down. I was the same way when I was 20. But, thankfully, back in those days they didn’t give 20 year olds that much power.
At Oklahoma State they had an incident where the star running back(who wasn’t even american….he was from Canada) objected to the fact that HC Mike Gundy was wearing a T-shirt that had an little OAN(One America News) emblem on it. He was not wearing it on campus but on a summer fishing trip that he took with his 2 sons. Somebody took a picture of it and put it online. The player said that this was a racist news organization and he couldn’t play for a coach that supported such a network. I would have said “Adios, amigo….the plane back to Canada is leaving at 3PM.

  16. TUFF SHIT! WHAT A COMPLETE JOKE!
As a former team Captain, this incident shows the total team weakness from Helton’s influence. These players should all transfer because they played and tackled like horse shit, and they know that the easy, weak times are over at USC. Thank God!!
The Players should play their absolute BEST today against CAL to get noticed by LR..
I’m sure he’s taking names and evaluating everyone on scholarship, and the transfer portal is open to all players who know they can’t compete on the new USC team!
    Just typing this is Fantastic!
The present coaching staff will be shown the exit door, because they all STINK! I hope LR starts with a clean slate. He has proven that he knows how to win and recruit big!
I hear that there are coaching position openings and scholarships available at Georgia Southern. Clay Helton is welcoming all!!!
