When Does Lincoln Riley Flip A Non-Californian?

Five-star tailback Raleek Brown of Mater Dei committed to USC this afternoon, as expected.

So Lincoln Riley has now flipped two five stars he had committed to Oklahoma: Brown and QB Malachi Nelson of Los Alamitos.

Maybe the better question is when Riley can get a recruit who didn’t want to go to USC provided they had a real coach?

For example, can Riley flip four-star offensive tackle Jake Taylor of Las Vegas? Or four-star defensive tackle Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy of Lakeland, Fla.? USC needs guys like this more than another receiver or a quarterback.

  1. Raleek Brown reminds me of former great USC running back Rick Ervins, but with even more speed.

Need to get some offensive, and defensive lineman quick.

  2. Scottie, it is the guy’s 4th day on the job. He just picked up two of the bests recruits for ’23. Not just 5*, high 5*. With more to come. Down, boy, down.

He is a smart fella, he knows we need to control the LOS on both sides, he will get the job done.

And hey, have you heard USC hoops is 7-0, RPI ranked #3? Just saying…

  4. Scooter,

You have always said that SC needs to put a fence up around the State of California and then expand. Well, He didn’t start recruiting since Monday for SC. he has two 5* star players from So Cal. He needs to establish and get a foothold in the Southland. He needs to build relationships with the high school coaches. His assistants have to do the same. He has to see what he has coming back for next year and recruit for needs for now. Yes he needs olinemen and linemen, but let him get going. Come back and make a comment after the Dec. signing period.

  5. Scooter,

Signing the two 5* stars in one week reminds me of Shaun Cody and signing with Pete Carrol. It was actually Ed Oregeron that got him, but he signed for or under Pete Carroll. The ball is just starting to roll and the momentum will build up. Maybe you should come back and be critcal after the Dec. and Feb class are signed. Let us see what he gets. So far so good.

  6. This is a nightmare I can’t wake up from. I just hope he can’t flip the meat and potatoes guys. I hope they keep all the players they have and please god please do not let Caleb Williams transfer to USC. Leadership are still morons.

    1. Thanks for clarifying! Scotty trying to pull a fast one on everyone with 2 linemen already a lock to stay at OU. So I wonder if he’s got any insight on The 5* O lineman in the transfer portal leaving Oregon. Has anyone from the staff reached out to him yet about transferring and joining USC. Or is it against the rules for schools to reach out to players in the transfer portal?

  7. A bit off topic, but with the constant Media Attention on the “USC Cheaters and the Reggie Bush Scandal” aka “How the West Was Won” by Mike Slive….almost forgot that Notre Dame vacated 21 wins in 2012 & 2013 due to Academic Fraud under Brian Kelly. Nary a mention of this from the Media the past 10 years. My hope is, at a minimum, that USC games will at least get the newer cameras from ESPN.

    1. You don’t hear about the kid Kelly got killed in the scissor lift either. Which is worse, not knowing where Reggie Bush’s used Chevy came from or sending a kid up in a 40ft scissor lift in 50 mph winds?

  8. He doesnt have a full coaching staff in place. Very hard to land recruits when you cant introduce them to their new position coach.

Lots of players will be on USC campus taking visits. Riley is doing tons of in-home visits and it takes a few visits or calls to lock down commitments.

To complain about the lack of out of state commits is pretty lame. You really want to start with the Cali recruits to send the message that they are a priority and no one can come into our backyard and take our best players. I want to see T-Mac flip to USC. And I want to see the Nevada recruits – the Branch brothers and that edge rusher (forgot his name) flip. and maybe Jovante Barnes, the running back also flip.

How many Oklahoma players will enter the transfer portal once the full USC coaching staff is in place?

This is a sprint at the beginning of an endurance race and it is not over for another month or two.

    1. What worries me is I keep reading on the internet that he already has some recruiting violations where is former DB coach(who is still at Oklahoma) is recruiting for him. I don’t know if there is anything to that but the rumors alone are bad for recruiting.

    1. The honeymoon for Scott lasted 5 days. He’s back to snark mode without a real reason. The 5* flips are nice, but they aren’t coming in until 2023.

The bigger issue is that we have 4 players committed for the class of 22. Rivals has USC ranked at #99. We can blame Bohnhead, Gomer, the Coordinators, even Donte for that. While we were watching the grease fire on the field, someone forgot the recruits

  9. I think Lincoln Riley has plans for the men in the trenches, because he addressed the issue during his interview on Colin Cowherds show. I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt until I see otherwise. Steve Sarkisian, and Clay Helton didn’t make the offensive line a priority, they built their teams from the outside in, similar to something you see in a 7 on 7 passing league

    1. They dont want to announce the coaches getting canned before the Cal game so to bitch about the lack of o-line recruits right now is kind of lame. Chill people.

I think Riley and the recruiting staff will target 20-25 of the top 50 players and maybe 40 of the top 100 players during this crazy time. There are probably players who were not on either USC or Oklahoma’s radar and now we have a chance to at least get a conversation going.

And the transfer portal has just started to get going. Could we end up with 15 or more transfers? Maybe up to 7-10 players from OK.

    2. I’m sure Lincoln learned from that mistake at OU. That he better build the trenches from the bottom up or he’s not going to last too long at USC. I’m sure Bohn and him had that specific conversation when having a vision for the program. That’s part of the USC Trojans tradition when they dominate. Having a dominate line on both sides of the ball. That’s why they are known as tailback U.

  10. OWNS has disappeared. I heard he is waiting in line over at SOFI Stadium trying to buy tickets for the UCLA Football team appearance in the 1st annual Jimmy Kimmel bowl. It’s a big thing for UCLA fans they have not been to a bowl game in such a long time, and they know starting next year LA and the Pac 12 is going to be “The Land of Lincoln Riley”.

  11. Wolf, this is an excellent idea for a challenge or even a reality show: Can Riley flip a recruit from each of our 50 states? Plus a kid from American Samoa? 1 down, 49 to go.

  12. As Scott already knows, Jake Taylor has already stated he would be sticking with OU, and Brownlow-Dindy’s parents met at OU. In other words, Scott is putting out two recruits he knows Riley won’t flip.

  13. Getting these two five-stars makes a big, bold statement to other big-time recruits including linemen. There’s a new sheriff in town and his name is Lincoln Riley. And now is the time for USC to get back to being USC.

  15. $10-12 mil means you produce results right away, LSU/SEC style but it’s time for expectations, even speculation but not complaints. One thing I like, LR has been recruiting for us on OU’s time and dime, even using it’s staff. That’s a ruthless, win at all cost attitude. Otoh, the pressure and expectations for signing day should be there. And smart people know– if there is a failure now to get some OL/DL, TEs/ H-backs and RBs that can block, more speed in the secondary, some size and speed at LB, — the future is more of the past.

OU struggled post season, and was trending down, accused of soft play in the trenches, questionable D, and an Air Raid passing game (so called “Pro Raid”) that was being shut down by conference defense adjustments by (talent overmatched) opponents. OU has been accused of gaudy QB numbers in a scheme that loses to big boys… Sounds familiar but I think LR (and Grinch) came here to evolve as much as anything. This is a chance for SC and LR to get it right. We’ll see the Xs and Os in camp, but it starts with talent signed on Dec. 15th and the transfer portal.

    1. They are ranked at 90# right now in recruiting. Let’s see if this staff can pull off a miracle and move up 80 spots to get into the top 10. The 2 5*s are for 2023. Time to grind and get to work the next 2 weeks for the 2022 class. Things should be more clearer on Sunday when current coaches are given their pink slips and players that don’t intend to stay start transferring opening up more spots. Or told their a scholly is going to be revoked and to transfer out somewhere else. Time to rebuild this program from the bottom up. No more dead weight pre madonnas.

  16. If were ALL commenting on the defensive side of the ball, you know the head coach has to be thinking about it too. On Monday afternoon he was out watching the team practice. He had to be thinking to himself…”what the F@#$ I’m going to do with this mess?? Recruit real talent!!!!

    1. Trying to figure out who is staying or who is going from the mess he’s seen so far. He has 2 weeks to get to get some real talent to USC or its going to be another long season next year. USC us at 90# in recruiting rankings right now.

  17. Why does media do this? You have to just spur something else up like whiny little children, instead of letting the new coach get to work. If 2 five star athletes in 3 days seems just too dang easy, I hope the rest of his time here goes the same way without us starting the naysaying game. We get a great coup from the same USC staff heckled to death by our media reporting friend here and all we offer is the same impatient rhetoric as before. Who are the real losers here, hmmm?

  18. If you hear these prospects they invariably say they were a SC fan since they were a kid and dreamed of playing for SC. Then along comes this POS Hellton who squandered all of SC’s goodwill. Initially some still came because of his bullshit and they couldn’t believe SC would hire such an incompetent crap of a coach. However, the last few years with the POS being exposed he has driven SC’s brand to the ground and can’t get the sought after Californian recruits. 3 stars maybe alright for Iowa State or Cincinnati etc who knows how to use and develop them but this clown and his assistants can’t.

    Thanks again Haden and Swann.

Man, this is great, I, The Ghost, getting away from Wolcott. I should do this more often. I don’t get out much.

And the truth. Wolcott suppresses a lot of the truth. But not I. I come out with it.

Like how Wolcott and that guy Michael Guarino , MG– how they are together. Wolcott was afraid the truth might come out about MG and him– that it would be terrible.

You see, MG is not a real person. He is a prop I created years ago and plopped on you to see how it would work out.

I haven’t seen Owns lately, but he has a bowl game to boast about- right? If Ucla remains competitive the games in this end of the PAC 12 will be much more fun to watch.
