USC Hires Offensive Line Coach

The deal to hire Houston offensive line coach Brandon Jones but Lincoln Riley hired Texas A&M offensive line coach John Henson on Sunday.

I’m told Henson will make close to the $900,000+ being paid to USC assistant coach Donte Williams so a big play was made to get him to Los Angeles.

Henson was also an offensive line coach at Oklahoma State and LSU.

One funny note is Henson was hired in 2017 as offensive line coach at Arizona State but left after a month to return to his alma mater, Oklahoma State. Imagine the fanboys tonight if Riley had a hired an ASU offensive line coach. Not quite the same reaction.

    1. And in that game against Alabama, A&M’s quarterback completed 70% of his passes and had plenty of time to throw.

  2. Everything that I have read on the internet about this guy says that he is bigtime. That’s what they needed…..a bigtime O-Line coach. He’s also a great recruiter.

    1. P-man007 you are right that we finally have a big time OL coach. I sense Wolfie snark because he had a stint at ASU. This hire is a big step up from Neil Callaway. Enough said.

      1. Snark is Scott’s brand. It wouldn’t be the same Scott if he didn’t snark —that said, this is a great hire& should land us some players…..

      2. Helton simply didn’t have the clout to get a guy like this. Why would a big time O-Line coach at a big time program like T A&M want to leave that job to come and work for someone who is constantly on the hot seat like Clay Helton?

      3. Your statement about the last good O-Line coaches that we had was Tim Davis and Pat Ruell……Tim Davis…yes………Pat Ruell…no. When PC went to Seattle, he practically took his whole staff with him with the exception of Pat Ruell. Ruell spent the next year coaching in the United Football League(a minor league semi-pro league). Finally, a year later, Carroll took him on as an assistant O-Line coach because they were old friends from back in the days when they were starting out at the university of Arkansas under Lou Holtz.

  5. My question is, what happened to Houston’s offensive line coach, all of the media outlets said it was a done deal? Nevertheless, I’m glad Lincoln Riley finally got it done, and let’s hope he doesn’t have a change of heart if Texas A&M comes back with a bigger offer

    1. I was thinking the same thing, Bill. We have to keep this guy —not only is he a great o-line coach but we have to show other schools we mean business: when we say “we got him”, we have to “have” him.

      1. Yeah, tell it like it is, MG, and wile Riles is cleaning house with the Helton staff, why doesn’t he clean house with the prez and athletic director too.

Ok, firing Fault & Bon-Bon may be above Riley’s pay grade (maybe that is a poor cliche to use with Riles’ $9-Million+ contract).

Besides, Wiley should forget the administration and spend his time getting some defensive animals to compliment that offensive juggernaut he is scheming.

  7. Well, at least Henson looks like an offensive lineman. Does he have any eligibility left?

And he hung 41 points on Alabama?– That means he could hang 62 on sucla to get even with those Midget-Bears.

    1. As long as we’re hoping, I’m hoping we can get 63 points outta Henson when we see Chip next time around…..

  8. Oh, and I almost forgot. Henson caused me to lose a bet when his team barely beat Colorado in the last minute, something like 14-10. So let’s not get carried away just because he was able to score on Alabama, which several other teams have been able to do this season.

      1. Yep. Nice point, John. A&M’s defense was amazing […and as much as we criticize Oklahoma’s defense it was like 40 ranking points over USC’s]….

  9. Scottie, you keep talking about fanboys and sycophants and what if a guy was at ASU and blah blah blah.

What has Riley done so far?

    Signed 4 5 stars and 3 4 stars for ’22 and ’23 since arriving.

Cleaned house on the coaching staff with the exception of Donte. And most of those coaches are known at first rate recruiters including Henson.

Visited a bunch of schools, several which hadn’t seen a USC recruiter in year.

Obviously no guarantee of success, but looking beyond 2022, is there a school that looks obviously better than USC? (Saban is ’70).

Since Riley has been hired, he realistically couldn’t achieved more than he has.

Except for the posters, there hasn’t been much of value here outside of the Friday history columns, which are superb.

Good article below about the guy below.

Rioley could have won the national championship by now. LOLOL. Seriously though, he is doing waht SC needs, top recruits, and a good oline coach. If they can bring in the kid form ST. John Bosco, I think Ellis the big oline kid, and the Servite Kid, then SC would be a serious contender for future recruits.

  10. The common thread:
Texas AM, LSU, and Okie State all know how to protect the QB and RUN THE BALL. This is a great hire.

Riley, age 39, is showing incredible energy and moxie.
Next season could still have some rough spots, but the trajectory for the Trojans is strongly upward.

I recall the 2001 USC FB season. A 1-5 start, followed by a 5-1 finish.
    Then, 2002….

  11. What matters here is that USC is now able to hire high quality assistant coaches. Under Helton, we were scraping the bottom of the barrel -either inexperienced or discredited coaches. With Riley, we can pull a top dog.

    Welcome Coach Hensen.

  12. Why would we be mad at having an ASU OL coach? Their OL has certainly been better than ours for a while. That was pretty weak, Wolfman.

One thing is clear, when there’s good news at SC, Scotty’s snark game really suffers.
