USC Morning Buzz: The Hiring Of Assistant Gets Predictable Hysterical Reception

Pete Thamel of Yahoo reports that USC has hired Michigan defensive line coach Shaun Nua to replace Jamar Cain.

Seems like a solid hire. Of course, that is not the first reaction from the fanboy choir.

“Perfect assistants?” What in the world?

Nua is being credited today with coaching Michigan stars Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo.

But if you read reports from Michigan, Ryan Osborn coached the edge rushers and Nua coached interior linemen.

I know this: Nua did not recruit Hutchinson or Ojabo because they were already at Michigan or committed before he got hired.

That’s not his fault. But I don’t see why people go over-the-top when an assistant gets hired.

Saying he is a “perfect assistant” is based on nothing but ignorance.

    1. Saying he’s “solid” is “based on nothing but ignorance”, 67. Kidding. Just needed to say it before Scott did. He IS a solid hire. No question.
[I think the truth is: Scott’s had a belly full of Reign of Troy’s bullshit—they have zero credibility –so even when they say something forgivably over the top like “Perfect hire” —it makes Scott throw up]….

      1. 100%, Michael. OTOH, he is going a bit over the top in his contempt.

What is the latest with Bru McCoy and Kenan Christon?

      2. Reign of Troy actually covers USC football. They go to the practices and talk to the coaches. You know, all the stuff Scott does not do.

      3. If only Scottie could remove his “double secret probation” and be allowed to set foot on the practice field. With a whole new coaching staff, now would be the time to make amends.

      4. Half right, Goose. Reign of Troy DOES talk to the coaches and report on practices ….and, then, reports crazy stuff like… “Max Browne is the Next Big Thing!”….and “Coach Helton instills USC football with a New Sense of Purpose” ….cuz they don’t know how to evaluate what they’re seeing or hearing.

      5. btw, Good question re Christon & McCoy, 67! I was reading Mike Bohn’s statement about doing “everything possible to show solidarity with our Black Student Athletes!”
        Well, pal, here’s you chance.

  1. Wolf is certainly entitled to his own perspective. However – he must appreciate the buzz over simply getting a capable assistant position coach. The former assistants “mailed it in” – they were lazy and didn’t recruit.I was shocked to hear a guy from Servite (not the only pond with fish, I know) say that SC coaches hadn’t visited in 2 years. At this point, there’s nowhere to go but up.Pure pragmatism, yeah, but it beats the hell out of what we had for so long.Besides, you can always trade up along the way for a better coach. These positions aren’t for life and Riley is putting together an assembly from what’s now available. If SC throws one back in the lake, he can always get picked up by UCLA.Pay no attention to the number of fish metaphors…………

    1. Servite coach must have a real hard-on against USC because of the lack of attention from Clay Helton. Servite Coach, FWIW, many of us at USC feel the same way because of Clay Helton. Release your guys, send them to SC✌️

  2. Reign of Troy has been sugarcoating USC football for at least two years and they never miss an opportunity to kiss Mike Bohn’s and Brandon Sosna’s ass.

    1. …there was some reasonably scathing critique on RofT which became serious after 2019. They were not quite as ascerbic or outspoken as Mr. Wolf. There were a few good bloggers. Popeye, etc…

    2. some maybe, some have been critical for 3 years or so…optimism can be contagious, best to be more objective than subjective which is more realistic, but less popular these day.

  3. There is a lot of talk on some USC football websites in favor of QB Caleb Williams being brought into the SC program. It was Niccolo Machiavelli who warned not to constitute your army out of too many mercenaries from other countries. The same holds true for college football: witness what happened last year with a huge number of new players from Texas and elsewhere. No one wanted to tackle on defense because they had no hometown spirit or loyalty. Jakson Dart is from Utah but he chose SC and the only game SC looked good in all year was the Washington State game which he won. This is what Clay Helton did: let Bryce Young, Matt Corral, DJ Uiagalelei, JT Daniels go to other teams but sticking with a 3-star QB. Dart is a 5* type guy – stick with him.

    1. I like Dart, but Caleb Williams much further along in Riley’s system: 1900 yards passing, 21 TD’s, 4-INT’s, 21-point comeback against Texas. If Riley can assemble some more transfers, Caleb could be a Heisman candidate at USC in 2022.

    2. If you’re troubled by the mercenary aspect of the transfer portal, I would counter by saying “Adapt or Die!” Brian Kelly has no trouble with it.

    1. I’m not SW, but Graham from Servite already signed. Maybe be can get out of it especially if Harbaugh leaves!? There’s also 4-star Edge Henry from Lawndale who’s a hard commit but hasn’t signed.

      1. Harbaugh leave? and I usually , not always, agree with alicia…she does not write as often as she once did, she tried to be mostly objective…that site has changed a lot.

    2. I remember talking to Antonio Fargas at a game after his son Justin signed with Michigan. As we all know, Justin eventually matriculated back to USC and had a long NFL career. Graham and Henry, FWIW ✌️

      1. Justin’s first TD against Notre Dame was a thing of Beauty…. “we just kept running at ’em …and running at ’em….until they didn’t want it anymore…”

  4. Everyone of these offensive and defensive line coaches we have had in the last few years always seems to be the answer to our problems which has not been the case. This guy had some success at Michigan, but only time will tell if he can finally bring in some talented defensive lineman which is probably along with linebacker the main source of our defensive problems the last 5 years along with coordinator and assistant coach stability.

My personal choice was USC defensive lineman Ryan Nielsen who is now the Defensive line Coach and Coordinator for the New Orleans Saints who have an outstanding defense. Ryan, learned and coached under Coach O, and has alot of upside with potential to become a future head coach. I am sure SC is matching NFL assistant coach money so the main problem is he probably wasn’t even given an interview.

    1. Ryan Nielsen would be a fine choice. A smart pure bred that coaches discipline and integrity unlike these rap music thugs Helton flooded out program with

I’d also like to see Art Briles and Joe Barry in the mix for positions. Hey LR – let’s leave the rap music thugs in 2021 ok?

  5. Millions thought the old man with dementia was going to do so much better than DT. They were all excited when he was declared the winner. Now? Only those in complete denial will even TRY to claim he’s not doing horribly. No different than people getting overly excited about our football hires. It’s easy to fantasize about how well someone will do before they take on a role.

    1. 58% of voters for “the old man” disapprove of his handling of the economy and feel “they are worse off.”

Thankfully, everyone knows he’s got mid-term dementia and he is not running the country. Presidency-by-committee. Worked for the Gipper after the assassination attempt–great run for America.

  6. Old Don Brown (who had a brief stint at U Arizona) was the DC at Big Blue from 2015 to 2020 and–not including the covid year–was a top 5 DC during that spell–#2, #6, #8 and #10 (2016-19 inclusive). I’m not sure that anything that happened at U Mich for 2021 had anything to do with the new DC or this coach. Don Brown improved U AZ’s defense from #100 (deplorable) to #57 (better than USC’s) in his one year (2021).

I had Don Brown on my list for USC DC’s back in 2017/8 along with Aranda, Scalley (Utah), Leonhard (Wisky). Never had Venables on my list cuz he wasn’t leaving Clemson while his son was at Clemson.

Glad Don Brown is out of the Pac 12 cuz he would have really improved the Wildcats.

  7. …and I thought Reign of Troy was defunct.
I used to hang out there a bit. So did Guarino.
There were a few knowledgeable people on the blog, and Alicia de Artola and a few of her cohorts were reasonably smart. They gave Helton a
chance but hopped off after the 2019 debacle.

  8. I was really impressed with Michigan’s DL against Ohio State this year. Since 2019, I count 1 5-star, 5 4–star, and 2 3-star Michigan DT recruits. Not counting Edge guys which there was 4-star recruits of those too.
