Spencer Rattler Takes Shot At Lincoln Riley

Former Oklahoma QB Spencer Rattler took a dig at Lincoln Riley today while doing a press conference at South Carolina.

Now you might think I’m going to take a shot at Riley but . . .

  • Transfers always say stuff like this
  • I didn’t think much of Rattler at Oklahoma
  • This is like the new strength coach who always revolutionizes the program compared to his predecessor

It counters the idea Riley is a QB guru so let’s see what happens at South Carolina.

    1. …hmmm. Whom should I trust?
A guy from po-dunk Texas making $10M per year who has produced 2.9 of the last 4 heisman trophy winners (Hurts was super at OU) or some dude who was rightfully benched for non-performance.

  1. It’s NOT an “idea” that Riley is a QB guru…it is an irrefutable FACT. As Bill Parcells used to say, “You are what your record says you are.”

    1. Well, people in this world of ours, people enjoy refuting things that are irrefutable facts.

As one senile old man (whose name escapes me at the moment) put it, “We choose truth (or rather their version of it) over facts.”

      1. 2/3 majority vote needed. Yeah, that’s going to happen.
Do you have a specific reason for impeachment or want to do it just because?

  2. Satterfield coached a couple of years under Matt Rhule at Baylor and 1-year as assistant offensive line coach for the Panthers. Coleman is an analyst who has a small college background as does Satterfield. Beamer was the Asst HC under Riley 2018-2020. Rattler overselling it a little bit.

      2. Oh, I don’t know about that, Michael, I got my Ph.D. a long time ago, and after that everything is just gravy. But it is true– Ed is out of my league.

And how about a few kind words for Rattler– can you imagine being in grade school and all the boys upon seeing Rattler would start making a zzzzzzzz sound, and bully the kid by saying “Hey snake, catch any mice last night?”

    1. We don’t need Riley as coach. We need EDDIE BOY. Eddie Boy will take USC football back to the promise land. EDDIE BOY…..the next Moses.

  3. Good move Scott Wolf not putting any negatives in early on Lincoln Riley. It’s obvious something was written about Andy Enfield in the beginning, and he has not forgotten so to me it shows you are learning to get off on the right foot with the new guy in town this time.

  4. I don’t think he took a shot at Lincoln Riley, he just told the truth. Riley is a good coach, but he’s not the end all to be all. How many National Championships has he won at Oklahoma? Is a matter of fact, he’s 1-3 in major bowl games, so of course there’s better coaches out there.

  5. I have to agree with Scott, Spencer Rattler is worth quoting. In fact, he is the first person I would go to ask about quarterbacking and quarter coaches. His experience, knowledge of the game, and remarkable record surely warrants this. Now I can cheer for two USCs!

  6. If Rattler is so enamored of the pro style offense, we should hook him up with Paul Hackett and I’m sure he’ll change his tune after being coached by that guy!

  7. Spencer Rattler has a quarterback name how could he go wrong? Maybe it’s his last name, which my spell checker keeps changing to Rattled. Or perhaps the name Spencer is too nerdy? My guess is he wasn’t very good, but I didn’t follow the Bloomer Schooners or whatever they’re called.

  8. I noticed that Spencer Rattler was bagging on LR. Spencer Rattler was not a great QB. That’s why Riley replaced him. He had one year where he threw for 3,000 yards and 28 TD passes. That was in 11 games as a sophomore. Nothing to scream about on a great offense. Caleb Williams threw for over 2100 yards and 19 TD’s in only 8 games as a true freshman. Jalen Hurts threrw for 3800 yards in 2019. Kyler Murray threw for 4300 yards and 42 TD’s in 2018. Baker Mayfield threw for over 4600 yards and 43 TD’s in 2017 and 4,000 yards and 40 TD’s in 2016 and 3700 yards and 39 TD’s in 2015. Then there was Shane Carden with 4700 yards and 30 TD’s in 2014 at ECU. Again, Carden with 4100 yards and 30 TD’s in 2013. Then there was Dominic Davis with 7200 yards and 62 TD passes in 2010 and 2011. Don’t listen to Rattler. Look at the numbers. Lincoln Riley is an offensive genius going back to 2010 when he was first in charge of an offense at ECU. He has the ability to produce the kind of offense that LSU had in 2019 when they had Joe Burrow and won the NC. In fact, that year LSU was #1 in the nation in offense at 568 yards per game and Oklahoma was 3rd at 537 a game. The problem won’t be offense. USC will have a great offense. The problem will be defense. So far, in 5 years as HC at Oklahoma, LR’s defenses have been underwhelming at best.

  9. Scooter,

Terminology is one thing. But to be able to carry that terminology to the field and see what needs to be done and execute it might be another. He might be able to comprhend the terminology but not execute on the field. We will see

  10. Spencer is upset at being made a scapegoat. Riley understands that the players stopped playing for him at Oklahoma. The separation was good for both parties. Riley has to win so he wants to create his own identity at SoCal BLVD. The key is consistency and roster management. Dave Aranda and Baylor exposed OU last year under Riley and Gundy exposed OU’s lack of leadership. We’ll see if Riley learned to eat some humble pie.
