Morning Buzz: USC’s Got A New Strength

With the new attitude regarding discipline a theme the past few days, here’s another thing:

A big reason is the Trojans’ new strength coach, Bennie Wylie, is in charge of discipline. A strength coach is often the most consistent contact with the players because he sees them every day. And if a player misses a workout, Wylie doesn’t need to go upstairs, he can handle it. Same with a missed class.

So Wylie has a lot of authority, which means the players have to respect him.

I’ve heard — and written — a lot of critiques about the past few strength coaches. So far, I’ve heard good things about Wylie.

  • USC received a commitment from Ventura College kicker-punter Garth White. He did not kick for Ventura College last season but was the punter and averaged 37.6 yards on 16 punts.

    1. I am not so convinced that Lincoln Riley is a tough guy. Kind of reminds me of Lane kiffin
Don’t be too surprised when he’s on the Sun bowl sideline with sunglasses on. Dante Williams is ready to swing. You know that dude is from the hood.

    2. What, finally the weight room is going to be put to use?

The medical staff is going to have it’s work cut out for it.

      1. Some truth to that as well, LJ. As Ernest Hemingway said…

”There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man. True nobility is being superior to your former self.”

      2. Yes, John –God cares about that too. But the Big Finish is what it’s all about. As Aquinas put it, “the rest is of preparatory efficacy.”

        Hemingway had another line

        ‘I went bankrupt two ways,
        Slowly then suddenly.’

I’ve always thought that was one of the funniest lines I’ve ever heard.

  1. I’m baffled at some of these athletic directors hirings, and the two schools that come to mind are Georgia Southern, and the university of Colorado. Clay Helton, and Karl Dorrell are proven idiot, but they both get second opportunities ? Dorrell as expected is failing miserably, and I’m almost sure Helton will too.

      1. Dorrell actually beat Pete Carroll. [Watch the game on YouTube — Dorrell actually looks up to the sky after the game is over —a quick “thank you”]….

    1. There’s nothing to be baffled about. Clay Helton will do just fine at Georgia Southern because that’s where he belongs. Don’t conflate USC and Georgia Southern. Helton can get away with 90% of his “soft” arena football philosophy at a low level school like Georgia Southern. But you can’t get away with that crap at USC!

  2. Think of football as a para-military form of organization that requires discipline and coordination. Helton was not good at either. He would drop some players from the team, coddle others who were his pets and then neglect discipline in attending classes, wearing uniforms, practicing, etc. No consistency. This became notorious at the Iowa – USC bowl game when the Iowa team warmed up as a group with precision while SC players were rag tag and everyone seemed to do their own thing. Of course, Iowa skunked Helton.

      1. Michael, spring-cleaning – everything new at USC football (except for Donte, but maybe it is a “new” Donte, at least that is what people are saying). In some of the videos from practice, he is out there running routes with the CBs running alongside, trying to teach them stuff. First I ever heard about a DB coach running routes to coach up the kids.

White House says normal midterm transition. Ha!

The midterms are a ways off. But who counts anymore?

    1. Voting for Biden was stupid enough all on its own.

But being stupid enough to vote for that ticket knowing you’d be putting Kamala a heartbeat from the Presidency?! Amazing that we have THAT many brain dead people in this country.

  4. What in the world is going on with our high priced- million dollar a year women’s basketball coach. Still early but lots of players transferring out which is not a good sign, and it appears Coach Gottlieb is not a great recruiter As I stated earlier: She is wayover her head turning around the USC basketball program in a very good Pac 12 conference, and will take the first offer she can get from the WNBA or NBA. BAD HIRE BY MIKE BOHN WAY OVERPAID FOR A LOW REVENUE SPORT AT USC. Very nice lady, good basketball mind, but not the right person competing against some true coaching legends in the Pac 12.
