  • Today is Ward Bond’s birthday.

A couple weeks ago, I wrote about how Bond was a starting offensive lineman on the 1928 USC national championship team. He was in 13 films nominated for best picture, including three winners: “It Happened One Night” (1934); “You Can’t Take It With You (1938) and “Gone with the Wind” (1939).

And he was the star of the TV series, “Wagon Train.”

But he probably wasn’t a great guy to hang around. Comedian Robert Wuhl said in a podcast when actor Martin Landau appeared on “Wagon Train,” Bond learned that Landau was a Jewish actor from New York. Instead of throwing a fake punch during a fight scene, Bond cold-cocked Landau.

Syd Kronenthal, who was a supervisor at a rehab center for U.S. Army veterans and helped Marlon Brando play a paraplegic in his first film role, said, “Ward Bond was anti-Semitic as hell.”

Actor James Lydon said, “Ward Bond was a thick-headed loudmouth.”

Remember, at Bond’s funeral, the legendary director John Ford walked up to actor Andy Devine and said, “Now YOU’RE the biggest a—— I know.”

      Is it not amazing all through history people pick on the Jewish people and Black people more than any other religion or ethnic group?

    1. Thank you, Charles. An interesting sidebar in the article above is the statement that Malik Willis, of Liberty University, is expected to be the first QB drafted.

      Malik Willis? So much for recruiting sites and stars. Malik Willis was recruited as a 3-star athlete by Auburn, then transferred to Liberty. Not even ranked as a QB. And I had forgotten that Liberty U. had a football team.

    1. Drugs or suicide. Only good reason to walk on the freeway is a broken down vehicle. No mention of one here.

      Still sad. Way too many young people dying these days, most of whom we never about.

      1. Drugs or suicide?– The guy was in Florida training with some of his teammates, he had a chance to be the Steelers’ quarterback, and this occurred around 6:30 in the morning.

        I lived on PCH in Malibu for a couple of years, and parking is limited, so my wife and I had to park one of our cars across that dangerous highway. We would jog across the street, and cars would not ease up from their speed. If we had stumbled we would have been history.

        Probably the same thing happened with Haskins, on a morning jog, and he misjudged the speed of the oncoming truck, or stumbled.

      2. PCH is not a freeway/interstate. Pedestrians are allowed on PCH.

        Out of gas would qualify as an exception, as I already noted.

        But suicide is always a possibility. We have no idea what goes on in peoples’ private lives, no matter how wonderful it may seem from the outside looking in. Cheslie Kryst was a former Miss USA and a licensed attorney. (She was GORGEOUS!!!) Jumped to her death from her high rise condo in January.

      3. BTW, I knew someone who seemed to have it all going for him. A CFP, good looking, fit a genuinely nice person who made any & all feel welcome and included in a social setting. Got out of his car on a freeway here in So Cal and stepped in front of a big rig.

        I didn’t know his very well. He was a friend of a friend. But it still blew me away. Supposedly 1 in 6 are dealing with a mental health issue on some level. That means each of us likely knows at least a handful of people who are, whether it’s noticeable to us or not.

  13. Update– I read somewhere that he had run out of gas, but that does not explain how the police claimed he was on the highway for “unknown reasons”
