Josh Conerly Commits To Oregon

Five-star offensive tackle Josh Conerly of Seattle committed to Oregon tonight.

The USC fanboy recruiting media was so excited all week that Conerly would be a Trojan.

“I did not have my mind made up until Wednesday,” said Conerly, who said he was figuring out to choose between USC and Oregon.

These are the types of guys USC needs. People assumed Lincoln Riley would get him.

Privately, I was told by insiders at USC he was projected to start next season. So back to the drawing board. The O-line remains a big issue.

      Offensive linemen aren’t a priority for ‘Ol Mule Shoe, all he is focused on is skill position players, just like his cousin Clueless Clay.

    That S. Schrader fool had a picture with new Duck Olineman’s daddy last night.
    Schrader you got taken to the cleaners along with the bandwaggoners.

    I knew about the Williams transfers from my sources. They were dead silent on this one.

  3. When I read that Conerly had taken an 11th hour visit to Oregon last weekend, I smelled trouble for SC

    But not all is lost fellow Trojans. This bazooka will be a flame-out as so many of these god-awful high school prima donnas end up, and SC will be just fine without the
    fat slob.

        He’s 6′-5″, 283 pounds as a 17 year-old, with a huge frame to bulk up. He’s the same size and build as Tyron Smith was when he came to USC.

      3. You realize the people giving the stars are interns and recent college grads? College recruiting and the evaluation of high schools sports ballers is the dishwasher beat of sports reporting. And get this, if they’re good at they get leveled up to covering a team. Then some other random newbie comes in and gets to dole out the stars…

  4. i feel like there is something wrong with a kid who could not make this decision before the last week. sounds like a prima-donna. it was likely cash from Nike (phil).

    oregon only wins a couple of these recruiting battles with SC. if Conerly doesnt make it to the NFL, he will have no real value in the Oregon degree and he will have only himself to blame.

    Riley is winning the best recruits with his talent as a coach and the value of the USC degree and opportunities. Lanning will win a few battles with dirty money from phil.

    If Lanning doesnt win this coming season, recruits are going to question whether he is really a good head coach, or is just a coordinator who got promoted too early.

    2. He does seem to be a great DC. A great HC? That remains to be seen. The money means a lot to these young teenagers. How many of these athletes have left college sports(basketball and football) too early because some agent promised them millions?

    3. Oregon is a program that permits players to smoke weed. Not exactly what NFL scouts are looking for. Not sure he would fit in Lincoln Riley program if Oregon attracted him.

  5. Extra cash benefits offered by Uncle Phil Knight at the last hour sealed the deal for Oregon with Conerly. Luckily, Uncle Phil is getting way up there in years, and once he leaves for a higher destination the Oregon athletic program will take a huge nose dive.

      2. Looks like 1939 was the last year they won a national title in a major team sport, men’s basketball. Cross country, track and field have been their strengths.

    2. I would not bet the ranch on that. You need more than money to win a NC. If all you need is Phil Knights money then why is it that USC has 11 NC’s in football and Oregon has never won one yet. Actually, they have only won one in basketball…..BACK IN 1939. The Ducks may be the Alpha of the Pac-12 but they looked like the floormats of the nation at the end of 2021 when 3 out of the last 4 teams they played stomped on them.

  7. I’d like to know what his reasoning was on picking Oregon over USC. When Helton was HC, the O-Linemen in the high school ranks had this idea of “don’t go to USC or you won’t get developed…..USC is not the place to go for O-Linemen”. Apparently, that attitude is still out there and I fear that it will take a few years to change USC’s reputation when it comes to the O-Line. This was a big loss. It would have been a big advance for recruiting this year had they brought him in to the fold.

    2. parcelman007 – i think that oregon’s new staff runs a pretty dirty recruiting program and will say and do anything to get recruits. riley runs a great program and is bringing guys who are all committed to putting team before self. i really liked what Shane Lee said about wanting to be part of building a great culture.

      there are plenty of physically talented guys who simply wont fit…and we dont want them.

      conerly’s extended recruiting time has made me question whether he has problems making a commitment, etc. remember Oregon got Kingsley Sumatai in the past and he turned out to be a head case and is there no longer.

      maybe Conerly is a great guy, i dont know. but one player wont every make or break the program. it is the coaches that will build it.

  8. No way the kid would start this year. My son played him in basketball just a few weeks ago. He is a really good athlete and has a really long frame, but he isn’t big enough yet. He will get pushed around until he gets more weight. He should be really good once he grows into his frame. Can’t deny his athleticism.

  9. Clay Helton buried the USC football program so deep into the ground that Lincoln Riley is going to have to have some type of success in order to land a 5 star linemen based on a verbal sell. All of the longtime Trojans faithful know the tradition and history, but a young up and coming athlete doesn’t.

    2. It is far more important to have great o-line coaching than just a bunch of 5 star recruits. Hensen is the real deal. Let him do his work. Wisconsin gets 3 star recruits and builds them into a really solid o-line.

      You bitched about Conerly’s lack of size (as a 17 year-old) at 6′ 5″, 283 pounds, and then you beak off about a 3-star rated player from Ventura County (of all places, LOL) being a better prospect, Ventura County being the home of the softest and most overrated players in California, who weighs 250 pounds currently.

      1. I think that o-line is one of those places where there is a vast difference between star ratings and their potential two or three years after they enter a college program. College programs can re-make a body and then it just comes down to their ability to understand defenses and work as part of a unit.

        We had a joke of an offense last year, so just having a real offense and real coaches will make a huge difference.

        Sure, I want some highly rated o-linemen, but we have a good amount of players that can be developed into an effective o-line this year. Bring in some players from the portal for depth.

  11. Among the o-line, number of stars is less informative than among other positions, as stars given to the oline pretty much line up with their size. For the Ventura kid above, 6’7″ and 250, if he was 270, then chances are he would be a 4*.

  12. The more I think about this, the more that I am convinced that the real reason for him going to Oregon instead of USC is clear and simple….MONEY. After all, what could they have offered him at the last second to make him have this change of heart….a harem full of naked body beautiful women? I think that Josh Conerly decided that his favorite color was green, not because the Oregon uniforms are green but because green is the color of MONEY.

But –let’s face it — Oregon is telling people we haven’t proven we can develop o-line players [maybe they even have some of that illegally gotten video of our o-line wandering around in spring practice –which some blog sites are referring to]. In any event, it looks like the word is out, true or not, that USC is still the place for 7 on 7 football….and it’s up to us to prove differently…

      1. We haven’t proven that we can develope O-Linemen? True! We haven’t proven anything yet. This is a new coaching staff. But, similarly, they(as a new coaching staff) haven’t proved anything either. But I think we have proved more than they have since we have a proven winner as a head coach and they have a head coach who still has never won one game as a HC.

      2. oregon has had ‘o’ linemen go to nfl recently and 1 in particular from jc ranks,and he started that year …that is a tremendous advantage for them ,for like the ‘sec’ & big 12 teams they get the jc all americans

    1. Don’t get me wrong —Lincoln Riley is one of the 3 best coaches in college football in my opinion. All respect. But Lincoln is not just going up against UCLA, Notre Dame, etc. in football contests — he’s fighting the bad taste left behind by a 4-8 record, Helton crazy-talk and the current ding-a-ling Athletic Department.

      1. Michael – I honestly think you are living in the past too much. It is a new season. The players and coaches are building a new culture. Riley has eliminated so many of the players that were not able to perform or had bad attitudes. He is bringing in some other really talented athletes through the portal. And players are finally getting coached up.

        There were a ton of very talented athletes in the USC program last year that just didnt get developed properly. Raesjon Davis is going to be a really great player. Korey Foreman will eventually get healthy and rock. The receivers who were misused last year will shine. A player like Calen Bullock will take the step to the next level (and put on weight). We also have some players returning from injury who will contribute alot like Brandon Pili and Solo, etc.

    Riley is prioritizing real purebred white strength in the trenches. It’s the right move. Build it like an SEC powerhouse from within. Coach our men who can actually speak English how to play with leverage and technique. Thugs like this homie can kick rocks!

  18. When I watched the announcement, I was touched by Conley’s genuine affection for his family, his team, coaches and others in Ranier. He had earlier talked about his younger brother being his best buddy. With that foundation, proximity to Oregon … 1.51 hr drive is much more attractive than 16.5 hours to SC by car or a flight and all its associated time. Josh is young and he likely needs his family nearby. Sorry we didn’t recruit him, but his decision makes sense.

  23. Why does USC wait until well into spring if not summer for a kid who will ultimately commit to another school? Didn’t we do that last year with a defensive lineman only to see him pick Ohio State? What’s wrong with December or February? They’ve had YEARS up to that point to decide. If they can’t pick a school by then, f*ck ’em. We’ll find someone else.

    Oregon is so far down the list of pac-12 schools with players salaries in the NFL. And if you don’t make it, all you have to show for it is poverty with a view. Connerly probably just didn’t see himself in Los Angeles.

    My thought is this, is Riley having trouble landing olinemen or was this because Nike offered him more money? Riley needed this to prove that he can get the oline and dline. This is his mulligan. We will see what happens in the future.
