Hail Caesar!

Former USC coach Pete Carroll received an honorary degree today from his alma mater, University of the Pacific.

I can’t believe it took Pacific longer than USC to award Carroll an honorary degree. But Max Nikias wasn’t known for wasting time when it came to honoring someone he liked.

  1. If we had the CFP playoff format that we have now there’s a good chance Pete would’ve won four or five championships. His teams always played the best game of the year in the bowl or championship game

    1. How do you account for the Tixas NC victory.

Little Petey will be remembered longer for his major defeats in CFB and NFL than his forgettable victories.

      1. Vince Young was a man amongst boys that game. He was on a mission and he accomplished it. Our tacklers were bouncing off him. We had the better team but Young was the difference motivated by the Heisman spurn. If that’s your summation of the Carroll era then you missed 95% of what happened.

Are you aware that Mater Dei High School has more Heisman winners than UCLA?

      2. Unfortunately, I have to agree with you. The Texas Game and the NE Super Bowl is what the Media seems to always focus on. Don’t hear much about 55-19 or the Legion of Boom holding the Highest Scoring Team in NFL History to 8 points in Super Bowl.

      3. Awww, the memories….poor lil ‘Petey’s gaffs always outweighed his accomplishments, despite having by FAR the best talent in college ball, he managed only one semi-legit Natty (2004 the Grantlad Rice trophy was stripped), then fled town leaving a two year bowl ban, a decade of probation, and SC laughing stock of the NCAA.

But let’s focus on his legendary gaffs: leaving Reggie on the sideline for the biggest play of game vs Texas, and his ultra dumb pass on goal-line against N.E. Every letter and e-mail he ever sends should end in “with Regret, Pete Carroll”

wolfman, you never got enough credit for running him and his hand picked cronies, Kiff and Sark outta town. The Classy Cadre, as the little girl in the Shack n’ Bake commercials said: “and we helped!”

      4. Bucky is here – welcome back! But he seems to be back on the magic shrooms, sadly. Pete’s gaffes outweighed his accomplishments? Hmm…anybody reasonable agree with that? Crickets.

How about those baby bears? I am guessing they are about .500, maybe not even that, in the last 25 years. And show-cause chip is really hitting out of the park, isn’t he?

The LA Times calls ucla football “depressing”. Anyone disagree with that? Check out the attendance at the RB:

Red Sanders fought against some cheap hotel bedsheets getting tangled up between his skinny legs. If the heart attack hadn’t felled Red, then the STDs he acquired that day would have.

      1. I have it on good authority ’67, from a person who knew McKay well, that McKay was a full race alcoholic. As to your contention McKay suffered kidney problems ’67, that may be true. But there’s no doubt McKay’s heavy juicing probably accelerated his demise.

**** EVEN “Both acute and chronic alcohol consumption can compromise kidney function, particularly in conjunction with established liver disease. Investigators have observed alcohol-related changes in the structure and function of the kidneys and impairment in their ability to regulate the volume and composition of fluid and electrolytes in the body. Chronic alcoholic patients may experience low blood concentrations of key electrolytes as well as potentially severe alterations in the body’s acid-base balance. In addition, alcohol can disrupt the hormonal control mechanisms that govern kidney function. By promoting liver disease, chronic drinking has further detrimental effects on the kidneys, including impaired sodium and fluid handling and EVEN ACUTE KIDNEY FAILURE”

    3. In 2014, I attended the USC-UCLA game with a young 12 year old Trojan fan. We happened to sit near midfield at the Rose Bowl and sat one row in front of this older gentleman. During conversations with his family members, I found out it was Donn Moomaw, an All American in the 1950’s who has his name on a banner at the Rose Bowl. Moomaw is still alive at over 90 today. As a minister, he delivered the invocation at the first inauguration of Ronald Reagan in 1981. He also was involved in Sex Scandal involving 5 women. This is who I think of when anyone mentions UCLA football.

      2. It was widely reported that the refs blew that game awarding 10 unearned points to TX on blown calls. It was the beginning of the push for review. The score stands but USC lost to the refs not TX.

      3. In the 2006 RB, Young’s knee was down on the first pass TD for TX. Replay confirms it. Officials blew that call.

Bush’s knee was down on the attempted lateral inside the TX 30 yard line, but it was ruled a fumble, ball was given to TX. Replay confirms it. Officials blew that call.

      3. Don’t laugh, 67 —-you couldn’t be more on the mark. [If you could get yourself a punter who had the leg to get ya 60 yards on your side of the field — and had the touch to place the ball inside the 5 when on their side of the field–you’d be in great shape —without runners, receivers or a qb. You’d just need ball hawk d-backs to get ya a couple pick sixes during the other side’s 180 downs]…

  4. Nobody can duplicate the Pete Carroll years. He owned L.A. and little ucla. The reign of LR will be successful but different in that there is more balance in the teams competing these days. All things being equal, it is now a hopeful USC football program. What is past is past even though the trollies can’t admit it because they all live in the past. Do we call him Doctor Ceaser now?

    1. Wow, that McCoy piece was eye-opening. So the guy had 2 priors, and yet the evidence indicates he was engaged in at least a throwing around the furniture situation with his one-time girlfriend that led to police intervention.

So maybe SC had a basis for outlawing him. The guy obviously has some impulse-control problems. Perhaps now that he is older and in the friendly Southern confines at Tennessee he will turn his life around. Too bad it didn’t happen while at SC because Troy could have used him.

    2. The girlfriend has some unhinged jealousy issues and seems to push things things to the limit. Maybe you can attribute Bru’s not
being prosecuted to George Gascon’s policies. But if Bru kicked Cray-Cray girlfriend and head butted her, he probably should’ve been suspended from the team. I disagree that he represented a danger to the university at large.
