No. 1-Linebacker Staying In Texas

Five-star linebacker Anthony Hill, who visited during USC’s biggest recruiting weekend ever earlier this month, has narrowed his choices to Texas A&M and Texas.

Is it surprising USC did not make the cut? No.

But an awful lot of ink was spilled by the USC fanboys about Hill’s visit, which raised some hopes.

There’s still plenty of other prospects USC will get but it is nice when a non-skill player picks the Trojans.

      1. …btw —according to Phi Steele [“the experts’ expert!”] USC’s Linebackers, Defensive Backs and Special Teams are just about the worst in the Pac 12 …

      2. Michael, I think Phil may be missing out on the USC transfer LBs. And the fact that there will be defensive coaching this year. What a novel idea. That said, based on what I saw at the spring scrimmage, there is a huge need for a punter.

      3. Here’s what I think Riley is thinking –“It’ll be wonderful if our defense can slow other teams down enough to permit our offense to score one more TD than they do…”

      5. Or ol ED might get hit up side the head with a frying pan or rolling wood pin. Beasley Bruin style, by the misses.

    1. USC fanboys need to relax, and understand that Lincoln Riley is not going to out recruit, Jimbo Fisher or Steve Sarkisian in the state of Texas for the 4&5 star players.

      1. He will lose some to Fisher. But losing out to 7-win Sark? Not likely. Sark may have been the second worst HC choice in the last 10 years among the Power 5.

      2. Facts. And it’s really not arguable when you look at signings. Someone needs to sit down with LR and explain: LA should be locked down. California should be locked down. The West Coast and the P12 footprint, USC the first choice. Pacific Islanders talent, USC’s. USC’s Everything west of the Mississippi and north of the Arkansas River, USC’s home recruiting turf. If someone comes to those grounds it’s poaching, and USC will poach back, picking the best talent from those areas.

Texas, FL, they’re great but they have too many Power 5 programs in state and too many Power 5 conferences that depend on them for talent. Until BYU joins the Big 12 we’re the only Power 5 in our entire footprint and the only modern championship caliber program of 2/3 of the country geographically.

I thought we already learned from the Helton-Harrell-Kiff years: lock down the geography, play big-boy football win championships, or give up our region and play soft type of fb, and we go into a tailspin…

    1. Correction: Winning convincingly changes everything parcelman007, Helton managed to stumble out of a Rose Bowl with a win, but it didn’t make him a football coach. Each game needs to start with the foot on the gas, and not let up until the clock runs out. Save the hugs for after the game.

      1. The amazing thing about that Rose Bowl (as fun as it was to watch and the great players in it) That may have been the worst coached game I have ever seen on any level of football on both sides of the field. An average FCS or D2 or 3 coach should have one that game on either sideline. As bad as Helton F-d that game up, Franklin should be ashamed of himself for giving that game away with that lead, the ball and time left on the clock and the best back in football. And that was after USC gave up in the 3rd quarter and left the stadium so that penn state could take over. I prayed that we wouldn’t hire him before and during the firing of “Sham”. I liked what he did at Vandy but what happened at Penn st… the heavy lifting was done before he got there, and his “in game” coaching has been atrocious. I real good indicator of bad coaching in any sport on any level is multiple, massive swings in momentum on both sides. Think about that game and how it played out. That is exactly what went down. They called it a dramatic boxing match. It wasn’t that, It was real bad play and planning for periods, countered with great motivated individual effort at the same time for stretches. Then the reverse. I’ve watched that game at least 15 times and it gets more grotesque each time you watch it. Its like watching a car crash, you can’t take your eyes off it.

      2. I can see some boat racing this year. I can also see the USC defense give up some points this year. Let’s just hope it’s not as many points as last years defense. They should be all right fight on.

      1. @vault91 The refs we’re just as bad in that 2017🌹 Rose bowl game. The refs hosed USC left and right that entire game with non holding calls on ped st. Fake touchdowns, PIs etc. They just looked the other away. It was sickneing at times. I’m glad that USC had heart and came back and won that game. Gave them the hose Job right back at the end of the game, even though it was a scoring fest. 51-49. In a classic come from behind win for USC Trojans. Fight on. Never give up!

    2. PC and company walked into one of the most talented teams in the nation, that was sadly uninspired and badly coached and got it back on track. The first PC recruiting classes were among the top 5 or top 3, immediately locking down LA, the West. LR is taking a different approach which may or may not work.

      1. Shytt stirrer extraordinar that what Scotty does, with his fan boy trolling, that’s getting old already. I’m a USC Trojans fan right it down, take a picture, I don’t give a rats ass. If it wasn’t for die hard USC fans on this blog; it would suck with grumpy ass ruin fans and trolls. Fight on don’t stop being a fan.

    1. Skill position is short for “Ball Skills Position”, which is an odd thing perhaps, but is used to mean secondary, receivers, backs and QBs. An LB in some schemes may be thrown in but it usually is reserved for the positions mentioned. Wolf’s not making this up or being a jerk on this one.

  1. I was hoping USC would’ve gotten more of this for 2023 after getting Nelson and Branch.

@PeteThamel: What does Arch Manning’s commitment mean for Texas Football? They’ve got seven commits since his announcement, and he’s actively texting recruits to convince them to come. “We may have a few more to go here this week.”
