If It’s Monday, An Offensive Lineman Didn’t Choose USC

Four-star offensive lineman Lucas Simmons of Clearwater, Fla., committed to Florida State today.

Simmons chose Florida State over USC, Florida and Tennessee. He visited USC last month during the Trojans’ biggest recruiting weekend ever.

He’s the latest lineman to recently spurn the Trojans, who are probably going to need to lower their sights eventually as more blue-chip prospects commit elsewhere.

  4. USC will now have to focus exclusively on the 2023 Portal to find high end offensive lineman. This may work out better for the Trojans since they are comfortable with NIL Deals for current college players as opposed to the programs offering outright pay for play dollars to high school athletes like Miami, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Oregon. Additionally the players signed from the Portal will not take 2-3 years to develop like high school lineman. Henson needs to get his act together soon because the Portal option is not a long term solution. It will fill gaps but the 2024 recruiting class for offensive lineman must be loaded with 4 & 5 stars or Henson needs to be replaced.

  7. USC needs to learn the difference between throwing great parties and recruiting. With the move to the Big 10, we need strong offensive and defensive lines and it just doesnt cut it to miss out on these players.

    With Miami, the problem was NIL money, but is that what happened here as well? If USC is trying to run a clean program while other people run these rotten programs, it just wont work.

  8. Problem is there doesn’t seem to be a clear definition of clean vs. rotten. It’s the loopholes again. USC just needs to do what works. We’ll be accused of being dirty but the NCAA has been Kardashianed and has no balls (unless the NCAA can identify them from all the others that the Kardashian women have collected and proudly displayed).

  9. as I have previously stated the 7 yr tenure of hellton destroyed all confidence in USC as a football team that develops real competitiveness and especially linemen…it will take at least a season to prove otherwise…the ones who came from the transfer portal will be the proof; until then, SC has a very veteran line from last yrs new line coach that last yr vastly improved them, and this brand new complete staff will continue doing this…nobody has signed as of this time and by Dec SC may change some minds by winning, and whatever this new nil bs is about

    1. I think the 4 and 8 season has been fodder for the competing coaches seeking the same recruit as we. Add that to the lack luster helton years with horrible lack of player development revealed in low NFL drafts. The helton, swan, haden years created a devastating hole which cannot be immediately overcome. The stink lingers on… I’m hopeful we will have an exciting successful season that will dazzle the recruits and open the doors for linemen seeing there is a new sheriff in town and he’s good.

    NO WONDER THE ROSE BOWL WANTS TO GIVE UCLA THE BOOT. EVEN WITH A MOVE TO THE BIG 10 THE ROSE BOWL WILL REMAIN EMPTY BECAUSE THE FANS ARE TIRED OF A LOSING PROGRAM, AND EVERYONE KNOWS THEY ARE WAY OVER THEIR HEADS IN THE BIG 10.   13. UCLA (and USC) will divert so much of that Big Ten contract money away from football. I get funding the other sports, but Carol Folt will find away to fund her free tuition scheme (families who make $80K or less) or something else of the like. Money is fungible.

  14. On the one hand, SC certainly is competing for these guys. In most of these cases SC was one of the last few finalists. But we’re not getting them. LR should be concerned about this because we can’t win big without them.

  15. Let’s add a few more linemen once the portal re-opens in August. Plenty of time to worry about 2023 recruits later. Offense will be Top 10 and hopefully team will be too. Time to show Riley’s progress on the field.

UCLA should do the same because no one goes to the games. -ZERO Pac 12 Championships in over 22 years came you blame the fans, but if you can’t win in the Pac 12 over a long period of time how in the world are you going to survive in the Big 10 Conference.
