USC Morning Buzz: The Nation’s Leader In NIL?

There was a report a couple weeks ago that alleged USC wide receiver Jordan Addison was unhappy over some promises made about NIL deals when he transferred.

I’m not particularly interested in Addison’s NIL deals — or lack of them.

But I heard from two members of the football team that a significant number of players are frustrated with the overall lack of NIL deals for USC athletes not named Caleb Williams.

“USC acts like it is the best school in the country in NIL deals but a lot (of players) see things differently,” a player said. “It’s definitely not working out like it’s been portrayed (by USC).”

How could it possibly not be going well?

  1. Almost two months ago, I said there would be issues between the Haves and Have Nots. Two weeks ago, someone (Charles, I think) posted about the collective Texas A&M had put together to make sure everyone was getting something.

    How did we (USC) not see this coming, if a couple of knuckleheads on a blog did?

    1. Like politicians, too many academic managers have never worked in the real world. If they had, this human behavior would have been understood. Now that it’s surfaced. Hopefully, corrections can be made SOON. We need a TEAM, not a group of disgruntled individuals.

    2. Texas Tech collective will pay 85 scholarship players and 15 walk-ons $25K each annually. $2.5 million a year would be chump change for any Power 5 school.

    3. This is about Folt and her political idealogy. She cant fathom that we will dip our toes into the dirty water of NIL collectives. Additionally, USC has pissed off every major football donor, so it will take some kissing ass to get them back.

      I was not impressed with the interview of the guy in charge of Stay Doubted. That company name tells you enough about what a bozo that guy is.

      This was a Bohn-headed move. Lincoln Riley had better get personally involved in sorting out the NIL mess that has been created for him before it decimates his recruiting abilities.

      NIL is about paying athletes to come to your program. Like it or not.

    Aside from the usual unnamed sources, how many players were asked in total? If you ask 20 and only 2 indicated they are frustrated, then 90% are not frustrated or at least indifferent. Scott, you deal in this kind of reporting too often in which you cherry pick. Why not release the numbers who you asked? How many were OK with their details, or at least neutral?
    If the two approached you, could it simply be a “self selection” issue–the whiners are the ones most likely to contact you, it is not a random draw.

    It also lacks context, but I wonder if we surveyed other teams, if it would not be possible to find two players who are not happy with NIL deals?

    2. Of course it isnt a scientific poll of all the players. I am pretty sure Scott is 100% correct here. Riley needs to start threatening Bohn if this doesnt get resolved.

      There is NO REASON to pay 100 million for a coach over 10 years and not play the game of recruiting as it is being played. These academics need to grow up and live in the real world.

    3. I agree with you Salamis. But the bigger picture is that for the last 6-8 years Usc has been all about smoke and mirrors. Pitch um (players, fans, media) a bill of goods with a flashy name and video and talk about Hollywood, and big market and flashy pass pass pass offense and they will buy it. Same on the admin level. Talk about equity and such and leave education in the closet. The best way I know to be fair to all genders, races and groups is to give them a solid education and allow them to create opportunities. Which gets back to NIL. It was meant to allow an individual to profit off his name. image and likeness. Not have someone do it for him or her. Now they expect to walk into a paycheck or a deal pre set. That should be the players job. But in regards to smoke and mirrors, how much did the university spend on 2 LSU video hype guys who spent a year and now left on making hype videos that a 12year old girl could have made, and it got the program even further in the hole. Id like to hear more about this clown, Michael Calvin Jones. Talk about smoke and mirrors. Just listening to him talk around in circles, use a bunch of catch phrases and say nothing.

  3. Caruso gave a lot of $$ for USC NIL when it was time to sign Caleb, but my understanding is that his contributions are on hold as he spends millions of $$ on trying to become LA mayor. He had already spent $23 million by April. NIL would be a better investment.

    1. Are you saying that Caruso is the only source of money among the USC alumni now? If that is the case, then Folt should immediately be fired.

      If you cant get money from the USC alumni base, you have done something horribly wrong.

  4. Well, aside from the quality of Wolf’s reporting, it figures there is undoubtedly some discontent on the team about many not having any NIL contracts at all. That only stands to common-sense reasoning.

    Texas A&M had the right idea and now is sitting on the No. 1 recruiting class. The stars will reap the most, that is accepted and understood, but make sure everybody gets something in equal shares to avoid mutiny
    (or at least discontent)

    1. Exactly! You will find some discontent at any school. Human nature. Without knowing the details of NIL agreements across the schools, it is very hard to know how to compare–hard to believe A&M is the only school adopting this model, but who knows.

Since Scott Wolf started this blog he hasn’t been wrong about too many things with the USC football program, but the fanboys still question him, because it puts a damper on their dreams, and pretend game. Wolf said from day one, that Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin, Clay Helton , Pat Haden, and Lynn Swann would all FAIL, and they did. While the delusional fanboys as usual, thought otherwise. If you continue to question Wolfs credibility, then stop reading his blog.. 😂. It’s that simple.

    2. I can’t recall anyone who posts here who was positive about any of the people you mentioned. Haden and Swann had zero experience in college athletics administration, we all knew that. Sark never had a legitimate HC record, we all knew that. Kiffin may have been a reasonable choice given the over-the-top NCAA sanctions in place then, but I don’t recall anyone thinking Kiff was a great hire. Scottie’s blog is where it is at, no doubt about it, and he has a good eye for what the university f’s up, but he also has an axe to grind that goes back to Pete’s days.

  8. The bigger issue here is if these kids are allowed to switch teams multiple times or yearly without a loss of eligibility in years or some sort of other penalty. If that comes to pass, many top performers will transfer after any big year to negotiate a larger (and guaranteed) NIL deal. Heaven help us if that happens. Fight on!

  10. Think about it (but not for too long). This Hollywood, where names and faces are a dime a dozen. Agents chew you up and spit you out. When was the last time you saw a three star lineman on the poster for any sports drink, fast car, or sexy clothes? William Perry might make a good spokesman for a burger joint, but when was the last time you heard that name?
    In order for any average football player to get a shot a money for their likeness, they have to be extraordinary. USC is a baby giant right now. Give them time, we’ll see more from Hollywood once the players have done something that makes them stand out. Mark my words! (But not on your screen with a sharpie (which the kicker endorsed))

      1. Thing is MG, USC could mean the Univ. of So. Carolina. UCLA has a rich, unmatched US and international identification SUCC can’t equal.

        That’s why UCLA received more than 150,000 freshmen applications for the year 2022.

      I know you cannot be referring to one coachless game which, Scott told me that someone’s brother told him, was done in order to make hapless Ucla more appealing to the Big 10.
